Recommended Free Tools
The right PC depends on the specific space sandbox survival games you want to run. Compare each title’s CPU model and instruction-set support, graphics card and VRAM, system memory, Windows version, DirectX requirement, storage capacity and storage type. Published minimums are compatibility thresholds for installing and launching a game—not a promise of a particular frame rate, resolution or stutter-free experience.
There is no single “space survival” PC specification
Space sandbox survival games range from relatively modest procedural worlds to large, continuously streamed environments. Their requirements are set by each game’s engine, simulation load, assets and support policy. A machine that satisfies one title’s minimum can still fall short in another, especially for CPU instruction support, graphics memory and SSD capacity.

Use minimum and recommended figures as two separate checks. Minimum requirements answer “Can this configuration meet the publisher’s baseline to run the game?” Recommended requirements indicate a more suitable target, but they still do not establish a guaranteed frame rate. None of the published listings below provides a comparable FPS, resolution or quality benchmark.

Why the CPU specification matters
Clock speed alone is a poor way to compare these games. A CPU’s generation, core count and supported instruction sets can determine whether the game is supported at all.
Core count and named processor generations
Empyrion’s listing uses broad thresholds: a dual-core processor at 2.5 GHz minimum and a quad-core at 3 GHz recommended. Starfield instead identifies specific processor families. Its minimum Ryzen 5 2600X and Core i7-6800K, followed by the recommended Ryzen 5 3600X and Core i5-10600K, give you a clearer generation target than a generic “3 GHz CPU.” A newer processor with a lower advertised clock can outperform an older chip, so compare the actual model rather than matching frequency numbers.
Instruction-set support in Star Citizen
Roberts Space Industries specifies a quad-core CPU with AVX, AVX2 and FMA3 support, alongside Intel i7 Haswell-or-newer or AMD Excavator-or-newer guidance. These are compatibility requirements, not optional performance extras. Verify the processor’s instruction-set support before buying a used system or an older workstation; a machine can have enough cores and memory yet fail the required CPU feature check.
Practical CPU checks
- Identify the exact processor model in Windows’ System Information or Task Manager, not just its base-clock speed.
- Compare that model with the named minimum and recommended families for Starfield and the generation guidance for Star Citizen.
- For Empyrion, confirm at least two physical cores at the listed minimum and prefer four or more cores near the recommended target.
- Leave headroom for background applications, voice chat and browsers; the publishers do not state how much overhead their numbers include.
GPU, DirectX and VRAM determine the visual baseline
Graphics requirements span a wide range. Empyrion’s minimum RX 550 or GTX 1050 with 2 GB of VRAM is far below its recommended Vega 56 or GTX 1660 Ti with 4 GB. Starfield begins at an RX 5700 or GTX 1070 Ti and recommends an RX 6800 XT or RTX 2080. Star Citizen calls for a DirectX 11.1-capable card with 4 GB of graphics memory.

- Turn on the Bright Lights: With the built-in RGB lighting, take your gaming experience to the next level by pressing the MSI LED button to cycle through lighting options. Customize lighting even further with MSI Center software.
VRAM is separate from system RAM. A card can meet a model-name comparison yet lack the listed graphics memory, which can cause texture streaming problems or prevent the configuration from meeting the stated requirement. Check the dedicated video-memory figure in the GPU’s specifications or in Windows’ display adapter details.
DirectX versions are part of compatibility
- Empyrion lists DirectX 11.
- Star Citizen lists a DirectX 11.1 graphics card.
- Starfield requires DirectX 12.
Installing a newer DirectX runtime does not turn an incompatible GPU into a DirectX 12-capable one. Confirm hardware feature support and use current graphics drivers supplied for your exact card.
How much system memory should you plan for?
Memory requirements make the titles diverge. The current Empyrion Steam listing says 10 GB minimum and 16 GB recommended. Star Citizen lists 16 GB or more. Starfield lists 16 GB for both minimum and recommended, so 16 GB is its published baseline rather than an optional comfort target.

Storage is not just a capacity question
All three games place more emphasis on storage than a simple “free disk space” number suggests.
- Empyrion: 10 GB minimum or 15 GB recommended, with an SSD highly recommended.
- Star Citizen: a 150+ GB SSD is required, plus at least 10 GB of additional SSD space is recommended for the pagefile.
- Starfield: 125 GB and an SSD are required.
Only Star Citizen’s support guidance mentions extra pagefile space, and none of these sources requires NVMe specifically. A SATA SSD can still satisfy an SSD requirement unless a later game update says otherwise. Keep additional free space beyond the installation figure for patches, shader caches, save data and the operating system; the publishers do not provide a universal reserve percentage.
Operating-system and edition checks
Operating-system support can change independently of hardware. The current Empyrion Steam entry lists Windows 10/11 64-bit, while its older FAQ lists Windows 7/8 64-bit. Star Citizen supports Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11. Starfield requires Windows 10 version 21H1 at minimum and recommends an updated Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation.
Use a 64-bit Windows installation where the listing specifies it. Before troubleshooting a launch failure, check the exact Windows version, pending updates, DirectX feature level and GPU driver. Do not assume that an older OS shown in an archived FAQ remains supported by the current build.

How to compare your PC with several games
- List the exact games and editions. Include Star Citizen or Squadron 42, Starfield and Empyrion separately; do not compare against a vague genre minimum.
- Record your hardware models. Write down the CPU model, physical core count, GPU model, dedicated VRAM, installed RAM, Windows edition and free SSD capacity.
- Check hard compatibility first. Verify Windows architecture, DirectX support, CPU instruction sets for Star Citizen, and the required SSD capacity before considering performance.
- Compare like with like. Put your hardware beside every game’s minimum column, then repeat against every recommended column. A system that clears one game’s recommended GPU but only another game’s minimum CPU is not a uniform “recommended” machine.
- Plan the tightest category carefully. Across these examples, Starfield’s recommended GPU and Star Citizen’s 150+ GB SSD requirement may be the limiting checks, while 16 GB RAM is the common practical floor in the newer listings.
- Leave upgrade margin. Reserve SSD capacity and memory for updates and background software rather than sizing the drive to the installation number alone.
Combining the most demanding CPU, GPU and storage figures into a single parts list can help with conservative planning, but it is not a tested build or a performance guarantee. The source requirements contain no cross-game benchmark.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Minimum versus recommended: what the labels do—and do not—promise
A minimum line is best treated as a launch-and-compatibility threshold. It does not promise a target frame rate, graphics preset, resolution or consistent frame pacing. Recommended figures are a stronger starting point, yet the actual result can vary with game updates, scene complexity, drivers, background load and settings.
Because no comparable FPS tests are attached to these listings, avoid translating “recommended” into claims such as 60 frames per second at 1080p. If a retailer or forum supplies such a claim, check whether it identifies the game version, graphics preset, resolution and test hardware.

Relying on an old Empyrion FAQ
If a system qualifies under the FAQ’s 8 GB RAM and Windows 7/8 figures but not the Steam listing’s 10 GB and Windows 10/11 figures, use the current Steam page as the present-day storefront reference. Update Windows and add memory if necessary rather than assuming the older values still govern.

Checking only the GPU model name
Confirm VRAM and DirectX capability as well as the model. Star Citizen’s 4 GB graphics-memory requirement and Empyrion’s separate 2 GB and 4 GB tiers make this distinction explicit.
Installing on a hard disk when an SSD is required
Starfield and Star Citizen explicitly require SSD storage. Move the installation and, for Star Citizen, the pagefile allocation to an SSD with sufficient free space. Empyrion may run with its minimum storage figure, but its listing highly recommends an SSD.
Confusing low free space with an underpowered CPU
A nearly full drive can block installation or updates even when the CPU and GPU qualify. Recheck free capacity against 125 GB for Starfield, 150+ GB for Star Citizen, and the 10/15 GB Empyrion figures before replacing hardware.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA practical target for a multi-game space setup
For someone choosing one Windows PC for all three examples, start by meeting the hard requirements rather than averaging them: a modern 64-bit Windows installation, a DirectX-capable GPU with at least the listed VRAM, 16 GB of system RAM, a CPU that supports Star Citizen’s AVX, AVX2 and FMA3 requirements, and an SSD with room for Star Citizen’s 150+ GB installation plus its recommended 10 GB pagefile space. Then compare the exact GPU and CPU models against Starfield’s recommended tier if visual headroom is important. This is a cautious planning target, not a publisher-certified combination or an FPS promise.
