Choose a CPU that can keep it fed without diverting money from the GPU, then balance memory and storage against the games and other work you actually do. Current prices change quickly, so treat published build tiers as examples—not a guaranteed parts list.
Start with your monitor and the games you play
The useful performance of a gaming PC depends on what your display can show. Before comparing parts, identify your monitor’s resolution and refresh rate, and set a realistic frame-rate target for the games you play. A costly graphics card can be poor value if your display cannot make use of its extra output; a modest card may also disappoint if you expect high frame rates at a demanding resolution.

Compare graphics cards using benchmark results for your intended resolution rather than relying only on product-tier names. Tom’s Hardware’s GPU benchmarks hierarchy provides results by resolution and discusses display matching, ray tracing, and upscaling. Its comparison tables exclude upscaling and frame-generation results to keep the direct comparisons consistent, so check those features separately if you plan to use them. They can change performance and image quality, and native benchmark figures alone do not describe that trade-off.

Prioritize the GPU, but buy for your target
The graphics card is usually the central gaming-performance purchase. Compare cards at the resolution you intend to play, then weigh their tested frame rates against the price available in your region at the time you buy. If you use ray tracing, include ray-tracing performance in the comparison rather than assuming a card’s conventional benchmark ranking tells the whole story. Consider whether its upscaling or frame-generation options suit your preferences, too.
#1 Best Overall
- The world’s fastest gaming processor, built on AMD ‘Zen5’ technology and Next Gen 3D V-Cache.
- 8 cores and 16 threads, delivering +~16% IPC uplift and great power efficiency
- 96MB L3 cache with better thermal performance vs. previous gen and allowing higher clock speeds, up to 5.2GHz
- Drop-in ready for proven Socket AM5 infrastructure
- Cooler not included
For a 1440p build, for example, compare real 1440p results and local prices before deciding whether a higher-tier card is worth the extra cost. Tom’s Hardware discusses the Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB as an entry-midrange 16GB option, but that positioning alone is not a recommendation: current price, stock, and performance in your specific games determine whether it makes sense for you.
Choose a CPU that supports the GPU without crowding it out
A faster processor can help in CPU-limited games and at high frame rates, but a top-tier CPU is not automatically the best gaming purchase on a constrained budget. Compare gaming performance and current street price, and consider whether you also use the PC for heavily threaded work that benefits from more CPU capability.

Tom’s Hardware’s CPU benchmarks hierarchy includes 1080p gaming scores. Treat those as a comparison under that resolution, not a universal forecast for every game or for 1440p and higher. A powerful GPU can encounter a CPU limit, but how much that matters depends on the game, resolution, and frame-rate target.

Memory and storage affect the total build budget, but the available guide evidence does not establish one capacity that is right for every gamer. Decide what capacity fits the games and other applications you use, then compare the cost of that choice against the performance benefit of keeping more budget for the graphics card. Do the same for storage: consider the games you expect to keep installed and the space your other files require.

Published budget brackets can help frame a search, but they are tied to a publisher, market, and point in time. Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 guide uses US-oriented tiers of $900, $1,200, $1,700, $2,100, and $4,000+. Those figures are that guide’s build categories, not universal budgets or assurance that the same parts are available at those totals where you live.

Hardware adoption data can provide context, but it cannot tell you what your game requires. Tom’s Hardware reported Valve’s July 2026 Steam Hardware Survey figures on 4 August 2026: GPUs with 16GB of memory accounted for 25.9% of surveyed users, while 8GB GPUs accounted for 25.32%. The report says the figures combine Steam instances on Windows, Linux, and Mac. It also reported 8-core CPUs at 27.85% and 6-core CPUs at 27.52%. These are shares among surveyed Steam users, not minimum specifications, performance tests, or a recommendation for your build. See the survey report and Steam Hardware & Software Survey.

A practical order for spending
- Set the target: Write down your monitor’s resolution and refresh rate, the games you care about, and your desired frame rate.
- Compare GPUs: Use benchmarks at that resolution, then factor in local prices, ray tracing if relevant, and any upscaling or frame-generation trade-offs you accept.
- Choose a balanced CPU: Compare gaming results and price; spend more when your games, high-frame-rate target, or non-gaming workload justify it.
- Set memory and storage to your needs: Price the capacities that fit your games and everyday use rather than treating example builds or survey shares as requirements.
- Recheck the complete build locally: Prices and stock change, particularly for graphics cards, RAM, and storage. Recalculate using current offers in your country before settling on a parts list.
