In ESA’s 2024 report, 61% of Americans ages 5–90—about 190.6 million people—said they played video games for at least one hour per week. ESA’s later 2026 report puts the figure at 67%, or 212.3 million, using a one-hour-or-more weekly threshold. These are report-year estimates, not a measure of how many Americans play today.
What does ESA’s 61% figure mean?
The 61% figure comes from the Entertainment Software Association’s 2024 Essential Facts About the U.S. Video Game Industry report. ESA defined the group as Americans ages 5–90 who played video games for at least one hour each week; its estimated count was approximately 190.6 million. The figure describes reported weekly play, not everyone who has ever played, daily players, game buyers, or people who own a console. See ESA’s May 16, 2024 announcement and 2024 data page.
The 2024 report included children ages 5–17 in its quantitative data for the first time. That matters when interpreting the headline: the percentage is not an adult-only statistic.
How many Americans play video games every week in the later ESA estimate?
ESA’s 2026 report says 67%, or 212.3 million Americans ages 5–90, play video games for one or more hours weekly. ESA says the report was conducted in partnership with YouGov. The available report announcement does not establish that every methodological detail is identical to the 2024 estimate, so the two figures are best read as annual report estimates rather than a perfectly controlled measure of change. See ESA’s June 3, 2026 announcement and 2026 report page.

How do ESA’s 2024 and 2026 estimates compare?
| ESA report year | Share and estimated number | Age range and weekly threshold | Context |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 61%; approximately 190.6 million | Ages 5–90; at least one hour each week | Children ages 5–17 were included in quantitative data for the first time. |
| 2026 | 67%; 212.3 million | Ages 5–90; one or more hours each week | ESA says the report was conducted in partnership with YouGov. |
The reported share is six percentage points higher in 2026 than in 2024, and the estimated count is 21.7 million higher. Those differences alone do not show why the estimates changed or establish that a particular behavior caused the increase. ESA also published a 2025 report; its existence does not make the 2024 and 2026 figures a continuous, independently verified census series. The intervening report is available on ESA’s 2025 data page.
What the statistic does—and does not—tell you
- It measures a frequency threshold: at least one hour of play per week, or one or more hours weekly in ESA’s 2026 wording.
- It covers ages 5–90: it should not be described as the share of adults or as literally all Americans.
- The count is an estimate: approximately 190.6 million is the number ESA reported for 2024, not an independently verified census count.
- It is about playing: the headline is not a statistic about console ownership, game purchases, or spending.
The reviewed ESA announcement and report material do not provide the full methodological specifications for these estimates, such as sampling frame, weighting, confidence intervals, or questionnaire details. The 2026 announcement names YouGov as a partner, but that alone does not supply those missing specifications for either year.

Related ESA figures are not player counts
ESA’s 2024 release also reported an average player age of 36, an average 17 years of playing among adult players, and a player gender breakdown of 53% male, 46% female, and approximately 1% non-binary or preferred not to identify. These are separate figures reported by ESA; they do not change the definition of the 61% weekly-play estimate.
ESA’s 2026 report page lists $60.7 billion in total U.S. consumer spending on video games for 2025, including $52.3 billion for content, $5.4 billion for hardware, and $2.95 billion for accessories. ESA displays those components; they may not sum exactly to the total because of rounding. Spending is industry context, not a measure of how many people play or how much an individual player spends.
