1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe best place to buy a PC game depends on the title, your country, the checkout price, the launcher it uses, and how easy it is to get a refund. Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, Green Man Gaming, Humble Store, Fanatical, and Ubisoft Store are seven useful places to compare—not a verified ranking. Check the exact game listing and current terms before paying.
How to choose a PC game store
Compare the same game across stores, then check what you are actually buying. A direct store purchase may add a game to that store’s library; a retailer may instead sell a key that must be redeemed on another platform. Product availability, regional restrictions, payment options, and terms can vary by title and country.

- Availability: Confirm that the exact edition is sold in your country.
- Total price: Compare the local checkout price, including any payment conversion costs. Discounts and prices change, and no title-by-title price comparison is established here.
- Redemption and access: Check the product page for the required account, launcher, activation platform, and any DRM conditions. Store-wide branding does not establish the rules for every game.
- Refund terms: Read the policy before buying, especially before revealing or activating a key. Policies may have exceptions, and local consumer rights can also apply.
- Retailer authorization: For third-party sellers, check the game publisher’s own approved-distributor information where available.
Seven PC game stores to compare
Steam: a broad starting point
Steam is a useful first stop for comparing PC games. Valve says most products bought directly through the Steam store have no region restrictions, although exceptions exist. Its refund policy says, “You can request a refund for nearly any purchase on Steam—for any reason.” For eligible games, the general rule is to request within 14 days and have played for less than two hours. Valve’s policy page was last updated April 23, 2024. Steam cannot refund purchases made outside its store, such as third-party CD keys. Read Steam’s refund policy and check its region guidance.
Epic Games Store: regional pricing and claimed free games
Epic says its store is available on PC and Mac worldwide subject to legal restrictions, with regional pricing in more than 190 countries and over 30 territories. Local pricing and payment options vary by region. A free game remains in your library after the offer ends if you claim it while available. Epic says eligible PC and Mac purchases marked refundable or self-refundable generally qualify within 14 days if runtime is under two hours; exclusions apply. The FAQ states: “Games and products are eligible for refund within 14 days of purchase if they are marked as ‘refundable’ or ‘self-refundable’.” Check the current product listing and terms. GOG: check the individual game’s DRM details
GOG offers PC games, including new releases, bestsellers, and sale listings. Its storefront brands itself around DRM-free PC games, but that alone does not establish the access conditions for every title. Read the individual product page to confirm whether a game requires a launcher, account connection, or other DRM-related conditions. Browse the GOG store.
Green Man Gaming: a third-party retailer with specific key conditions
Green Man Gaming is listed by Ubisoft as an approved distributor for Ubisoft games. That is not a blanket authorization for every publisher or title, so check the relevant publisher’s guidance. Green Man Gaming says refunds or store credit are discretionary and handled case by case. Its general conditions include requesting within seven days, not activating or downloading the game, and not revealing the key; the policy separately discusses EU withdrawal rights. Read the terms before exposing a key. Green Man Gaming refund policy.

Humble Store: compare the exact listing and terms
Humble Store is one of the seven candidates worth checking for a particular game, but current catalog, regional availability, redemption details, and refund terms are not established here. Confirm those points on the live product page and policy before purchase.
Fanatical: verify the game’s platform and conditions
Fanatical is another store to compare, but current catalog, regional restrictions, redemption platform, and refund policy are not established here. Check the exact listing and current official terms rather than assuming every key works on the same launcher or has the same return options.

Ubisoft Store: relevant for Ubisoft games
For Ubisoft-published games, Ubisoft Store or Ubisoft Connect PC is a direct option. Ubisoft recommends buying directly or from distributors with a digital distribution agreement; it warns that keys from unauthorized sellers may be invalid or revoked. Its approved-distributor list includes Green Man Gaming, Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, and Gamesplanet. That list applies to Ubisoft distribution, not every publisher’s games. Ubisoft’s help information summarizes a digital PC game refund window of 14 days and no more than two hours played, subject to policy conditions; check the live policy for your region before buying. Which store should you check first?
| Store | Useful when | Key policy or check |
|---|---|---|
| Steam | You want a broad starting point for a direct store purchase. | Eligible games generally have a 14-day request window and under two hours of playtime; third-party keys are not refundable through Steam. |
| Epic Games Store | You want to compare regional pricing or claim an available free game. | Refund eligibility depends on the product being marked refundable or self-refundable, timing, runtime, and exclusions. |
| GOG | You are considering a title listed by a store that emphasizes DRM-free games. | Check the specific game page; the storefront branding does not prove every title has identical DRM conditions. |
| Green Man Gaming | You are comparing a third-party retailer, including for a Ubisoft game. | For Ubisoft games it appears on Ubisoft’s approved list; Green Man Gaming’s general refund conditions include an unrevealed, unactivated key and a seven-day request window. |
| Humble Store | You want another listing to compare. | Current catalog, regional availability, redemption, and refund details are not established here; verify them on the official listing and terms. |
| Fanatical | You want another listing to compare. | Current catalog, regional availability, redemption, and refund details are not established here; verify them on the official listing and terms. |
| Ubisoft Store | You are buying a Ubisoft-published game. | Ubisoft recommends direct purchases or approved distributors and warns about unauthorized keys; confirm current regional refund terms. |
How to avoid a bad key purchase
- Open the publisher’s official page for authorized digital distributors, if one is available.
- Match the exact game edition and region on the retailer’s listing; check the activation platform and account requirements.
- Review the refund policy before checkout, paying particular attention to whether revealing or activating a key removes refund eligibility.
- Compare the final local checkout price and payment method rather than relying on a discount banner.
- Keep the receipt and order details in case you need to contact the retailer or platform.
Ubisoft’s warning illustrates the risk for Ubisoft games: keys from unauthorized sellers may be invalid or revoked. For other publishers, consult that publisher’s own guidance rather than assuming Ubisoft’s list applies.
