Pocketpair initially said it would investigate and respond to the patent-infringement lawsuit filed by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company, while noting it did not yet know which patents were at issue. Months later, Pocketpair said it believed Palworld did not infringe the asserted patents and argued that the patents were invalid. The companies’ statements describe opposing legal positions—not a court ruling.
What Nintendo and The Pokémon Company alleged
Nintendo announced on September 19, 2024, that it and The Pokémon Company had filed a patent-infringement lawsuit against Palworld developer Pocketpair in Tokyo District Court the day before. The plaintiffs sought an injunction and damages, alleging that Palworld infringed multiple patent rights. Nintendo’s announcement describes a patent case; it does not announce a copyright claim. On September 19, 2024, Pocketpair said it had received notice of the lawsuit and would begin legal proceedings and investigate the allegations. The studio said it had not been notified of the specific patents it was accused of infringing and was unaware of their details at that point. It also said it would continue improving Palworld and hoped the dispute would not discourage independent developers from pursuing creative ideas. Pocketpair’s September 19, 2024 statement.

Pocketpair reported that the plaintiffs sought an injunction against Palworld and 5 million yen plus late-payment damages from each plaintiff: 5 million yen to The Pokémon Company and 5 million yen to Nintendo. Those sums were requested in the claim, as Pocketpair described it; they were not a court award. Pocketpair’s November 8, 2024 update.
