There isn’t a reliably verified current counter team to recommend: October 2026 guide results conflict over Giovanni’s final Shadow Pokémon, and Niantic’s support pages do not publish his current lineup. Check the Pokémon in your live encounter before choosing counters; the final opponent changes which team is best.
Why a specific counter team can’t be confirmed
Two October 2026 guide results disagree about Giovanni’s final Shadow Pokémon: one reports Reshiram, while other results identify Zekrom. Because that last opponent determines a key counter choice, neither lineup can be treated as confirmed. The available official Niantic pages explain how to find Giovanni and how Shadow Pokémon work, but do not verify his current roster. Check the live encounter or a dated official event announcement before relying on a named lineup.
How to reach Giovanni
Niantic says you must complete Giovanni-related Special Research to encounter the Team GO Rocket boss. A research step awards a Super Rocket Radar. The radar can reveal both Giovanni’s actual Hideout and decoy Grunts disguised as him, so investigate the locations rather than assuming every radar-marked Giovanni is real. Niantic’s Giovanni help page explains the process.
If you equip a Super Rocket Radar, the next Team GO Rocket balloon is piloted by Giovanni, according to Niantic.

What to know about Shadow Pokémon
Shadow Pokémon deal more damage with Fast and Charged Attacks, but also take more damage when attacked. Niantic says the increased attack damage appears as a Shadow Bonus in the Pokémon’s attack summary. That trade-off matters when weighing damage against the risk of a counter being knocked out. Choose counters after checking the encounter
Once you see Giovanni’s actual lineup, choose Pokémon for the opponents in that encounter rather than using a team copied from an older rotation. The current evidence does not establish the final Pokémon or a verified set of named counters, so a specific roster or moveset would risk being wrong.
