That is the team’s current listing—not a guarantee of starts or workload: the Raiders call the chart unofficial and fluid. Through Week 3, Porter’s game log shows two passes defensed in Week 1 against Miami, no listed regular-season statistics against the Chargers in Week 2, and one tackle in Week 3 against New Orleans. That small sample is a starting point, not enough to establish a season-long role.
What the current depth chart does—and does not—tell you
The Raiders’ September 29 depth chart places Porter ahead of Masses at one cornerback position and lists Stokes first at the other. Read that as a snapshot of the team’s ordering, not proof that Porter will start every game or play a particular share of snaps. The chart is explicitly unofficial and fluid.
The Raiders’ 2026 game log supplies the early on-field record: two passes defensed against Miami in Week 1, no regular-season statistics listed against the Chargers in Week 2, and one tackle against New Orleans in Week 3. Those entries do not show his snap share, coverage assignment, or how many opportunities he had. Use them as a baseline and look for sustained evidence as the season progresses.
How to judge whether his defensive role is growing
Start with starts and defensive snaps, then interpret the production in context. Tackles alone can mislead: a low total could mean few opportunities, while a high total does not by itself show how well a corner covered.

Porter appeared in all 17 games and started 10 for Las Vegas in 2025, recording 37 tackles, including 25 solo, three passes defensed, one fumble recovery, and five special-teams tackles, according to his Raiders profile. The team also reported that he played 93.8% of the defensive snaps from Week 13 onward in 2025’s final five games; across that stretch, he had 12 solo tackles, three pass deflections, and one fumble recovery. That late-season figure is a useful past comparison, not a 2026 snap count or a prediction of his role now.
What to watch in coverage
NFL.com analyst Lance Zierlein’s draft-era evaluation described Porter as a sixth-year senior with elite traits, athleticism, burst, speed, and ball skills, but only one year of starting experience at cornerback. It identified areas for development including pattern matching, press strength, contested plays, and run-support tackling. This is a pre-draft assessment, not a current grade of his 2026 play.

Zone recognition and man coverage
Zierlein noted that Porter’s college repetitions were heavily zone-oriented, while his athleticism could support more man coverage. When watching, look at whether he recognizes routes and maintains useful positioning in zone. If he is assigned man coverage, watch whether he stays in phase with the receiver and keeps leverage through the route. A broadcast may not reveal the assignment, so avoid treating a receiver’s catch—or a corner’s apparent location—as proof of a coverage mistake without enough context.
Route combinations and pattern matching
Pattern matching means defenders read developing routes and respond within the coverage structure, including carrying a receiver or passing that player to a teammate. Watch whether Porter reacts to combinations in a coordinated way rather than following one route blindly. Since the camera may not show the full secondary, a single visible movement is not always enough to judge the responsibility.

Disrupting throws at the catch point
Porter’s length can help shade downfield throws, while Zierlein identified strength in press coverage and contested situations as development areas. Look for whether he disrupts a receiver’s release without drawing a penalty, holds his position as the ball arrives, and finishes with a play on the ball. Separate sound positioning from the outcome: a completed catch does not automatically mean the defender was out of position.
Tackling and run support
Run-support tackling was another development point in the draft evaluation. When a play reaches Porter’s side, watch his angle, whether he takes a sound path to the ball carrier, and whether he finishes the tackle in space. A tackle total alone cannot tell you how often the offense targeted his area or whether he had a realistic chance to make the play.

Keep special teams separate from cornerback evaluation
Porter’s special-teams contribution is relevant to his overall value, but it is not evidence by itself that he is becoming a dependable defensive corner. The Raiders say he blocked five kicks during his Iowa State career through 2024—the most by any player in Big 12 history—and recorded five special-teams tackles in 2025. Track those plays separately from defensive snaps and coverage performance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why his position change matters
Porter played wide receiver early in college and switched to cornerback before the 2022 season. He became a college starter at corner in 2024, so he entered the NFL with less time at the position than a more seasoned corner might have had. That background is useful context for evaluating his development, but it does not determine his ceiling or establish how he is performing in 2026.

In an August 2025 Raiders.com Q&A, Porter described the position switch as a coaching decision and talked about improving his technique ahead of his final Iowa State season: “I knew it wasn’t where I wanted to be or needed to be, but I felt I was in a good place to take off and that’s kind of what ended up happening.” His comments explain his path into the position; current snaps and coverage execution are stronger evidence of his present role.
How to read competition and changes over time
In a June 24, 2026 Raiders.com cornerback-depth mailbag, head coach Klint Kubiak said he expected Jermod McCoy to be on the field, described the situation as “a moving target,” and said he expected McCoy to compete in camp and get plenty of reps. The mailbag discussed Porter as still acclimating to the position and the CB2 competition as open at that time. Those were offseason comments; the September 29 depth chart is the newer team snapshot, though it still does not establish actual game workload.
To compare Porter’s role from week to week, keep four separate records:
- Opportunity: starts and defensive snaps, when available.
- Assignment and execution: what he was asked to do in zone or man, and whether he carried it out.
- Ball play: positioning and disruption at the catch point, not just whether a pass was completed.
- Run support: angles and finishing tackles when the play comes his way.
Record special-teams work as a separate contribution. The team’s depth chart is useful for following listed order; starts, snap totals, and what can be reliably seen on a play offer better evidence of how that order translates onto the field.
