Nintendo’s official sources reviewed here do not identify a real plant as the inspiration for Mario’s Fire Flower. They describe it as a fictional power-up associated with Fire Mario; any resemblance to a tulip or flame-shaped bloom is a visual interpretation, not confirmed design history.
What plant is Mario’s Fire Flower based on?
No specific real-world species is confirmed in the Nintendo sources cited here. Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. Wonder history page lists the Fire Flower as the item associated with Fire Mario. That establishes the object’s place in the series, but not a botanical model or design origin.
It is reasonable to describe the game artwork as flower-like or flame-like, but those are readings of its appearance. They do not show that a designer based it on a tulip, another named flower, or any particular plant. The evidence supports a clear distinction: the Fire Flower is a fictional Mario item; its real-world botanical inspiration is not established here.
What does the Fire Flower do in Mario games?
Its role is a gameplay power-up, and its effects vary by game. In Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Nintendo of Canada calls it a classic power-up and says Fire Form can “Launch fireballs that bounce around!” The official Wonder power-up guide also notes that the fireballs may help against icy blocks.

Nintendo’s guide gives game-specific tips: players can toss fireballs while crouching and spin-jump while shooting. These details apply to Wonder; they should not be assumed to describe every Fire Flower appearance across the series.
What early Mario artwork tells us—and what it doesn’t
A Nintendo developer interview about New Super Mario Bros. Wii describes an early graphics technique: artists drew one half of certain item images, including mushrooms and flowers, then mirrored it to create the other half. The account is about saving graphical parts and producing symmetrical images, not identifying a real flower as a design source. Read the Nintendo developer interview in that context.
