What Resolution Should You Use for a 24/7 Waterfall Stream on YouTube?

For a continuous YouTube waterfall stream, 1080p30 is a practical starting point when your source and upload can sustain YouTube’s recommended 14 Mbps H.264 bitrate. Test first; drop to 720p30 at 8 Mbps if needed.

Start with 1080p at 30 fps (1080p30) if your source can produce it and your connection can sustain YouTube’s recommended 14 Mbps H.264 video bitrate. If that mode is unstable, try 720p30 at 8 Mbps H.264. These are YouTube’s recommended incoming video bitrates, not guarantees of stability: test your actual camera, encoder and internet connection before leaving a waterfall stream unattended.

Why 1080p30 is a sensible starting point

Waterfalls combine continuous movement with fine texture. Higher resolution can preserve more visible detail, but only when the source, encoder and sustained upload can handle it reliably. YouTube does not publish a waterfall-specific resolution rule or comparison test, so 1080p30 is a practical starting point based on its general encoder recommendations—not a universally optimal setting.

The resolution you choose is the incoming stream sent to YouTube. YouTube says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats so viewers can watch across devices and network conditions. YouTube’s encoder settings guide gives recommended bitrates for common incoming modes.

Compare resolution and bitrate options

The table shows YouTube’s recommended incoming video bitrates, in Mbps. Choose the row for your resolution and frame rate, then the column for your video codec.

These are YouTube recommendations, not measured performance results for a particular waterfall setup. YouTube also lists minimum bitrate settings on its guide; the recommended figures are useful starting targets. The guide advises choosing quality that is reliable for your internet connection and testing upload bitrate. It does not prescribe a universal upload-speed multiplier or guaranteed stability threshold.

Choose a mode your whole setup can sustain

  • Start with the source: use a mode your camera or video source actually provides. Upscaling a lower-resolution source does not create genuine extra detail.
  • Check encoder capability: confirm the encoder can sustain the selected resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate over a long run.
  • Check sustained upload: a speed test is only a snapshot. Test while the connection is being used as it will be during the broadcast, and watch for drops or stream-health warnings.
  • Judge the actual image: inspect moving water and fine texture for loss of detail or compression artifacts. If 1080p30 cannot remain stable, step down to 720p30 rather than keeping an unreliable higher mode.
  • Consider latency needs: YouTube says 4K/2160 streams cannot use the “improve for low latency” option and are set to normal latency.

Set the encoder for a dependable ingest

YouTube’s current guide lists RTMP and RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 video codecs, and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds. RTMPS is the encrypted ingest option YouTube recommends.

For SDR, YouTube lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit. For HDR, it recommends H.265; AV1 is not supported for HDR. Use settings compatible with your source and encoder rather than selecting a codec or color mode just because it is available.

Test before leaving the stream unattended

  1. Configure the intended mode: set the target resolution, frame rate, codec and recommended bitrate from the table. Set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, and use RTMPS where available.
  2. Run a representative test: include audio and movement similar to the real broadcast. YouTube specifically recommends testing with comparable audio and video movement.
  3. Check stream health: review YouTube’s stream-health messages during the test. Health information can flag issues such as low bitrate, a frame-rate mismatch, missing audio or video ingestion starvation.
  4. Adjust and test again: if the chosen mode produces warnings or visible instability, reduce the mode or bitrate as appropriate and repeat the test before relying on it continuously.

Stream-health information helps diagnose delivery problems; it does not guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
