At its October 2021 developer conference, Roblox described plans for more customizable avatars and limited-edition items whose scarcity and potential resale royalties resembled some features associated with NFTs. “NFT-like” was an analogy: the cited announcement did not say the items would be blockchain tokens. Roblox’s current Limited-item system operates inside its own marketplace, uses Robux and follows Roblox’s resale rules.
What Roblox announced at RDC 2021
In a report published October 14, 2021, TechCrunch described Roblox’s plans for avatar updates, new in-game monetization and developer tools. The avatar plans included layered clothing designed to fit different avatar shapes and dynamic heads, which the report described as an early feature for developers. The broader aim was to give users more ways to shape their appearance without making every Roblox experience look the same.
CEO David Baszucki framed avatar customization as a form of personal expression: “Self-identity is a crucial pillar of the metaverse, and the ability to precisely customize your clothing to your unique avatar is paramount in personal expression,” TechCrunch reported.
These were plans reported at the time, not a promise that every announced feature would arrive in a particular form or schedule. The conference announcement brought together avatar expression and ways for creators to earn from items.

Why the items were called “NFT-like”
The NFT comparison referred to scarcity and resale economics, not a demonstrated blockchain implementation. TechCrunch reported that creators could offer an item for a limited period or in a limited run, and that Roblox was considering rules allowing creators to benefit when an item was resold. Chief Product Officer Manuel Bronstein described that possibility this way: “The idea is that you [will] eventually be able to set the rules of what happens in the resale of an item,” the report quoted him as saying.
That statement described a future possibility in 2021. It should not be read as saying every Roblox item currently pays its creator a resale royalty, or that owning an item gives the buyer rights outside Roblox. The platform’s current item purchases and resales are governed by Roblox’s own marketplace rules.

How Limited and Limited U items work now
Roblox Support distinguishes two kinds of limited items. A Limited is sold for a limited time; a Limited U is sold until its limited supply runs out. Once Roblox stops selling an eligible item, its owners can resell their copies, subject to the platform’s requirements. Roblox lists items for purchase in Robux.
| Item type | How the original sale is limited | What to check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Limited | Offered for a limited time. | Whether Roblox still sells it, whether the item is tradable and resellable, the current asking price and the available price history. |
| Limited U | Offered until its limited supply runs out. | Whether Roblox still sells it, whether the item is tradable and resellable, the current asking price and the available price history. |
Roblox Support says resale requires Roblox Plus or legacy Premium, and an item may have a holding period of up to 30 days before resale. The item page provides resale and tradability details; listings can show sellers ordered by asking price and a price chart spanning 30, 90 or 180 days. Those are marketplace asking prices and historical listings, not a guarantee of what an item is worth or what it will sell for. Roblox says purchases are final. Since membership and marketplace rules can change, check the live item page and Roblox’s resale guidance before transacting.

Marketplace items and in-experience avatar creation are different
Roblox’s creator documentation describes avatar products such as hats, hair, clothing and full bodies. Creators may make a 3D mesh in software such as Blender and bring it into Roblox Studio. Selling an item requires meeting Roblox’s account eligibility rules, following Marketplace policy and having the rights to the item. Buyers pay in Robux; see Roblox Support’s avatar-item guidance.
There is also a separate route in which an experience lets players create or customize avatar bodies and purchase them for use in other experiences. Roblox Creator Hub says these in-experience-created assets are saved to a player’s inventory but are not listed on the Marketplace and cannot be traded or resold. They are not part of the Limited resale system. Details are in the Creator Hub avatar-creation documentation.

For creators publishing Marketplace items, Roblox’s July 2026 policy announcement described stronger verification and publishing requirements for 2D and 3D avatar items. Fees and eligibility differ by category and were subject to updates around the rollout, so use the current Marketplace policy announcement and live Creator Hub requirements rather than relying on an old fee or eligibility summary.
What Roblox’s newer creator figures do—and do not—show
Roblox’s September 2026 RDC announcement said creators had earned more than $5 billion through DevEx since it launched in 2013, and about $1.7 billion in the 12 months measured through June 30, 2026. Those figures cover creator earnings across the platform; they do not measure Limited-item sales, resale values or royalties. The same announcement said users would be able to tap avatars in Moments to buy items or background elements shown, with the feature planned for October 2026. Availability can vary by age and region. The current picture is therefore more specific than the 2021 shorthand: Roblox has platform-controlled limited items and resale, while the rights, payment and transfer rules remain within Roblox. Scarcity can make an item collectible, but neither an asking price nor a price chart establishes a reliable investment return.
