The significance is not that there is one correct way to play D&D; it is that Riegel’s choice puts his character’s values ahead of a safer tactical outcome.
Who Sam Riegel plays in Campaign Four
Riegel plays Wicander “Wick” Halovar, a human and scion of the Candescent Creed. Critical Role describes Wick’s faith and family loyalties as being challenged as he uncovers troubling truths about his religion. Campaign Four is a Dungeons & Dragons West Marches-style campaign with three rotating tables, and uses the 2024 rules, according to Critical Role’s campaign page and its Campaign Four explainer.
Why Wicander is in danger
The episode 37 dilemma follows an attack at the end of episode 36. Critical Role’s official recap of “Spectacle” says assassins attack Wicander during a performance, shouting, “Death to the Sundered Houses! Death to tyrants!” That cliffhanger sets up the danger in “Death to Tyrants.”
What Sam Riegel reportedly chose
A secondary account published by Ranzware on October 6, 2026, reports that the attack continues in episode 37, leaving Wicander downed and facing a series of choices from Game Master Brennan Lee Mulligan. In that account, Riegel ultimately chooses to free Tyranny from her family’s control rather than prioritize his character’s immediate chance of survival. This description of the episode’s decision comes from that secondary report, not an official episode recap cited here.
#1 Best Overall
- First major D&D adventure book within Critical Role’s world of Exandria, taking players from levels 3–12
- Multi-continental story that spans the scarred Wastes of Xhorhas, introduces the continent of Marquet, and eventually plunges players into the Netherdeep—a terrifying cross between the Far Realm and the deep ocean
- Bursting with lore and all new art depicting Exandria
- Includes a poster map of Ank’Harel
- Adds magic items, creatures, and introduces rival NPCs
The report also discusses Warding Bond and death saving throws. Those mechanical details are not necessary to understand the dramatic choice, and they should not be treated as a general explanation of the 2024 D&D rules based on this account alone.
Why the choice stands out to D&D players
The decision’s tension is between keeping a character alive in the moment and pursuing an outcome that matters to that character in the story. A player can often see tactical risks that their character would not weigh in the same way; role-playing means deciding what the character believes, knows and values, rather than automatically choosing the option that appears safest to the player.
Rank #2
- Fresh and unique take on classical Codenames inspired by the Critical Role universe.
- Fully cooperative—one Game Master (GM) leads their party through perilous missions.
- Includes three campaigns with branching missions, where each mission features its own goals and rules.
- Choose from 7 iconic Critical Role characters—Vex (and Trinket), Percy, Grog, Jester, Nott, Dorian, and Fresh Cut Grass.
- Level-up your characters after every mission, unlock their abilities and equip new items.
That is a compelling approach, not a universal standard for good play. Some players would choose survival, and a table may have different expectations about risk, character agency and tone. What makes the reported moment notable is that Riegel appears to let Wick’s priorities shape the decision even when the result could be costly.
