For a flexible early-game start in Black Myth: Wukong, invest first in dodging and stamina, then add health or projectile defense if those are the problems you encounter. After that, develop the stance and spells you actually use. There is no single best build for every player: combat habits and encounter demands should guide your choices, and Sparks can be refunded when you want to adapt.
How Sparks and skill upgrades work
Spend Sparks in the Self-Advance menu to unlock or improve skills. You earn Sparks by leveling up and by interacting with a Meditation Spot for the first time, according to the Epic Games Store guide; Xbox Wire’s beginner guide also notes that Meditation Spots award Sparks.

You can refund an individual highlighted node or refund all your points, as the Epic guide explains. That makes it reasonable to try a choice and change it if it does not fit an encounter or your preferred approach.
What to unlock early
Build a dodge and stamina foundation
Dodging is central to avoiding attacks, so stamina improvements are a practical starting point. The Epic guide recommends stamina perks, while Xbox Wire and ONE Esports both call out Simian Agility, which reduces the stamina cost of dodging, as an early option. Xbox Wire editor Mike Nelson puts the early emphasis on fundamentals: “For Chapter 1, it’s best to focus on leveling up your base stats before you really start to experiment with a variety of advanced skills.”

Use Mobile Spin when ranged attacks are a problem
Mobile Spin deflects projectiles while you move forward, according to the Epic guide, and Xbox Wire recommends it early. It is a situational utility pick rather than a universal priority: consider it when projectiles are regularly interrupting your approach or forcing you to spend too much time evading.
Add health or stamina to address survival trouble
Xbox Wire suggests investing at least three points each in Health and Stamina in its Chapter 1 advice. The Epic guide separately recommends Rampant Vigor for maximum stamina and presents Rough Skin as a possible defensive investment. These are recommendations from those guides, not mandatory thresholds. If you are surviving comfortably, points may be more useful in skills that support your chosen attacks.

Prioritize upgrades you will activate
Unlocking more nodes in a skill you rarely use is not automatically better than improving a move you rely on. Use your Sparks to support the dodge, stance, and spells that make up your actual combat routine.

The three stances support different approaches, so compare them by the attacks you prefer, how you use Focus Points, and what the encounter demands. The descriptions below reflect the Epic guide’s characterizations; its recommendations are not a universal ranking.

For stance perks, the Epic guide highlights Exhilaration for health recovery when consuming a Focus Point, Versatility for more damage from varied combos, and Quick Hand for faster charging. It offers Force Unbound and follow-up perks as a Smash-focused example, while also discussing options for Pillar and Thrust. Treat those as possibilities to match to your play, not proof that one stance or upgrade path is best.
Before spending heavily in stance nodes, check their descriptions in the current in-game menu. The Epic guide, published in 2024, describes Focus Point thresholds after spending 3, 10, and 20 points in stance nodes; the available evidence does not establish whether later updates changed those details.

Develop spells you actually use
Magic consumes mana, according to the Epic guide, so choose upgrades around the spells you cast rather than trying to develop every option at once.
Immobilize for an opening
Immobilize freezes enemies and can create an opportunity to attack. The Epic guide recommends developing its perks, including an interaction it describes with the Chapter 4 Envious Tongue relic. ONE Esports also recommends Evanescence and Stagnation alongside Immobilize, describing longer control and increased damage during the effect. These are potential synergies for players who use the spell; they do not establish that the same timing or result works in every encounter.

Rock Solid for timed defense
The Epic guide describes Rock Solid as a timed defensive action that staggers an enemy when used as an attack lands, and suggests example upgrades. This option is most relevant if you use the spell and are comfortable timing it against incoming attacks; its effect depends on the situation rather than guaranteeing a stagger whenever you cast it.
