In remarks reported from a June 2025 investor discussion, Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO Hideaki Nishino described cloud gaming as an additional way to access games—not a replacement for local play—and said Sony was not ready to share more about its next-console strategy.
What did Nishino say about PlayStation’s future?
Nishino’s June 2025 comments address two distinct questions: how players may access games, and what Sony is prepared to say about its next console. On cloud gaming, he acknowledged technical progress while emphasizing that many players still prefer games running locally, without dependence on network conditions. On the next generation, he said Sony could not share further details at that stage, while the platform’s future remained a priority.
The quoted cloud-gaming statement was reported by GameSpot’s coverage of the June 13, 2025 discussion; the source record does not establish a verbatim Sony transcript. The comments are therefore best read as a snapshot of Sony’s public position in 2025, not as a formal announcement of console specifications or timing.
Is cloud gaming replacing PlayStation consoles?
No. Nishino described cloud gaming as an additional option for accessing content. His stated view was that most players continued to want to play through local execution without depending on network conditions. That distinction points to a platform offering multiple access modes, not a declared shift away from consoles.

| Access mode | Where the game runs | Dependence described in Nishino’s remarks |
|---|---|---|
| Local execution | On local console hardware | Does not depend on network conditions in the way cloud play does. |
| Cloud streaming | Remotely, with the game streamed to the player | Access depends on network conditions; Nishino presented it as an additional option. |
These remarks do not establish which mode is technically superior for every player, or make claims about latency, cost, or service availability. They explain the strategic distinction Sony emphasized: streaming can broaden access, while local hardware remains important to the experience many players want.
What has Sony actually said about its next console?
In the June 2025 discussion, Nishino said Sony could not share further details of its next-generation console strategy at that point. He also said the future of the platform remained a priority. Those statements confirm that Sony was considering the platform’s future, but they do not disclose a product name, specifications, launch timing, or whether any particular feature will appear in a future system.

Reports or predictions about a future PlayStation should not be confused with information in these remarks. Sony’s May 2025 corporate strategy presentation discussed PS5 and the wider PlayStation business; it did not turn Nishino’s comments into a next-console announcement.
Why Sony’s strategy is broader than console hardware
Sony’s May 2025 strategy presentation framed PlayStation as a combination of hardware and services. It described PS5 as driving steady profit and identified growth priorities across the network business, studios, and peripherals, including PlayStation Portal. That context helps explain why a discussion of PlayStation’s future can include both local consoles and other ways to engage with the platform.

Portal belongs in the peripheral part of that picture. Sony’s presentation includes it among hardware-related priorities, but that mention is not evidence that Portal is a cloud-gaming replacement for a console or that it reveals a future console feature. Sony’s cited cloud remarks and its peripheral plans are related parts of the ecosystem, not interchangeable claims.
How large is the PlayStation platform?
Sony’s Corporate Report 2025 gave a snapshot as of March 31, 2025: 124 million PlayStation players, more than 4,000 creators, and more than 12,000 titles. These figures describe the scale of the platform and its community, not a forecast for a future console.

- 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
- Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.
In a May 8, 2026 strategy recap, Sony said PlayStation hosted more than 125 million active users worldwide. The wording and date differ from the 2025 report’s “players” figure, so the two figures should not be treated as a directly comparable growth series.

Sony’s May 2026 corporate strategy recap also discussed gaming-related AI initiatives, including improving content-creation productivity, gameplay experiences, personalization, and recommendations. This is later context about the platform’s development; it is not a continuation of Nishino’s 2025 remarks and does not establish any next-console specification or release schedule.

What readers can conclude—and what remains unknown
- Established in the 2025 remarks: Sony viewed cloud gaming as an additional access option and said most players still wanted local gameplay without dependence on network conditions.
- Established about the next generation: Nishino said Sony was not ready to share further details, while describing the platform’s future as a priority.
- Not established: a next-console name, specifications, launch window, or a plan to replace local consoles with cloud streaming.
- Broader strategy context: Sony’s presentations describe network services, studios, hardware, and peripherals as complementary parts of PlayStation’s business.
Nishino’s comments are best understood as a cautious statement of direction, not a PS6 reveal. They leave room for streaming to grow while making clear that Sony, as of June 2025, did not describe it as a substitute for local play.
