Verified means the game passes those checks without configuration work to access its functionality; Playable means it works but may need a workaround; Unsupported means Valve currently identifies a compatibility problem; and Unknown means Valve has not completed its review.
For a useful decision, read the badge alongside the game’s compatibility details in the Steam Store or Library. Those details explain which criteria a title misses and what that may mean in practice.
What the Steam Deck ratings tell you
Valve’s ratings summarize a review of a game’s compatibility with Steam Deck. The label is a quick filter; the accompanying details provide the practical caveats. Valve says those details show which Verified requirements a Playable or Unsupported game does not meet. Steam Support’s Steam Deck software guide explains where to find per-game information.
| Rating | Practical meaning |
|---|---|
| Verified | The game passes Valve’s compatibility checks, with no configuration work required to access all of its functionality. |
| Playable | The game functions on Deck, but may require manual setup or a workaround—for example, choosing a community controller layout, opening the on-screen keyboard, or using the touchscreen to navigate a launcher. |
| Unsupported | Valve currently considers the game unplayable on Deck because of incompatibility with Proton or specific hardware components. This describes its current status, not whether it could work after a fix. |
| Unknown | Valve has not completed a compatibility review. The label does not establish that the game fails on Deck. |
Valve’s Steamworks compatibility review documentation defines the labels and review criteria; its customer-facing Support guide summarizes them as works great by default, works with possible manual configuration, and not currently considered playable.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What Valve checks
The review focuses on whether the game can be used comfortably on this device, across several parts of the experience:
- Controls and input: The built-in controls should work throughout the game without requiring players to change in-game settings to enable them. Default input glyphs should be appropriate, and text-entry tasks should be possible with the on-screen keyboard or an equivalent controller-accessible method.
- Performance: Valve’s Steamworks checklist says the default configuration must deliver a playable frame rate; its current target is 30 fps at 800p.
- Display and readability: The game must run at a supported resolution, and interface text must be legible on Deck’s screen. Valve’s detailed checklist specifies a minimum text-size measure and recommends a larger target where possible.
- Seamless use: Compatibility warnings should not interrupt the experience, and any launcher should be navigable with a controller.
- System and Proton support: For games running through Proton, the game and its middleware—including anti-cheat—must be supported. Valve says blocking Proton bugs or Proton-specific performance problems can lead to an Unsupported rating while fixes are pending.
These are device compatibility and usability checks, not a general verdict on a game’s quality. They cannot establish how every scene, personal setting, play style, or later update will feel.

What a rating does not promise
It is not permanent
Ratings can change as games, Proton, and Deck features change. Valve described them as a snapshot in its March 4, 2022 Deck Verified update and says reviews and ratings may be updated. Check the current game details rather than relying on an old badge. The 2022 announcement said “over a thousand games” were Verified or Playable at that time; that is a historical figure, not a current catalog count. Valve’s current Deck Verified page notes that Steam releases and updates arrive daily but does not give a dated exact total of games reviewed for Deck.
It does not make caveats disappear
A Playable or Unsupported badge is less informative than its specific explanation. A touchscreen-only launcher step, hard-to-read text, a control-mapping issue, or an anti-cheat incompatibility can have very different consequences for different players.

Unknown is not a failed test
Unknown means Valve has not completed its compatibility review. It is an absence of Valve’s reviewed result, not evidence by itself that the game will not run. For an Unknown title, seek current game-specific information from its developer or players, and distinguish that information from Valve’s own rating.
It does not answer every separate game question
Compatibility is distinct from whether a game requires an internet connection. Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ says installed games can be played offline unless the particular game requires a connection.

How to use a rating before playing or buying
- Open the game’s page in the Steam Store or Library and find its Steam Deck compatibility section.
- Read both the badge and the detail explaining any unmet criterion. Do not treat the label alone as the whole assessment.
- Decide whether the stated caveat matters to you. Consider the actual workaround, controller usability, text legibility, launcher steps, default performance, and software or anti-cheat support.
- If the rating is Unknown, look for current game-specific information before deciding, while remembering that it is not a Valve-tested failure result.
When weighing two games, compare the particular criteria each misses and the workarounds they require. A single “works/doesn’t work” distinction can hide meaningful differences in controls, readability, launch friction, performance, or Proton support.
