It sends the separated water back into the reactor vessel while allowing drier steam to continue through the steam dryer, main steamline and turbine. The separator removes carried-over water; the reactor’s heat is what makes the steam.
What a steam separator does
A steam separator is an internal component of a BWR reactor vessel. Water in the vessel is heated by the reactor core until part of it boils. The flow leaving the top of the core is therefore not perfectly dry steam: it is a high-speed mixture of steam and liquid-water droplets. The separator’s job is to remove those entrained droplets before the vapor reaches the main steamline and turbine.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) describes the process as two stages of moisture separation. The steam-water mixture leaves the top of the core, passes through those stages, and only then is the steam allowed into the steamline. In practical terms, the separator is a moisture-removal device, not a boiler and not the turbine’s steam source.

This sequence is specific to the BWR steam path. A BWR boils reactor coolant inside the pressure vessel and sends that steam toward the turbine. A pressurized-water reactor (PWR) keeps its primary coolant from boiling in the reactor vessel; heat is transferred to a separate steam generator, which produces the turbine steam. Consequently, an in-vessel BWR moisture-separator explanation should not be applied to every nuclear plant.

How moisture separation works
1. The mixture enters the separator
After rising from the core, the two-phase flow enters the separator region. The flow contains a continuous vapor phase plus liquid droplets carried upward by the vapor. The separator provides geometry that changes the flow and gives the heavier liquid a path out of the steam stream.
2. Vanes create swirling flow in a fixed axial-flow design
In the fixed axial-flow design described by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the mixture travels through a standpipe and encounters vanes. The vanes impart a vortex, causing the flow to rotate. This is one documented design, not a claim that every BWR uses identical internals.
3. Centrifugal forces move droplets outward
Once the flow is rotating, centrifugal effects drive the denser liquid toward the outer part of the flow passage. The lighter steam remains concentrated nearer the central flow path. The separator’s surfaces and passages collect the liquid and keep it from simply following the vapor upward.

4. Water drains back into the vessel
The separated water exits from the lower part of the separator and rejoins the surrounding vessel flow. It is not discarded as a separate waste stream at this point. Returning it to the vessel preserves the reactor’s water inventory and keeps the liquid on the reactor side of the steam boundary.
5. Steam leaves at the top
Steam exits the upper part of the separator and enters the wet-steam region below the dryer. The dryer then provides another moisture-removal stage before the steam reaches the main steamline.
Separator versus steam dryer
The terms are related but should not be used interchangeably. Both components remove moisture, yet they occupy different positions and perform different stages of the process.

A plant diagram may label both components as moisture-removal equipment, but the separator handles the initial bulk removal from the rising two-phase mixture. The dryer operates downstream on the steam that remains.

Boiling in the core naturally produces a two-phase flow. Vapor bubbles and liquid water rise together, and droplets can be carried upward even after much of the water has boiled. The turbine path is intended to receive steam rather than a freely flowing mixture of steam and liquid. Separators provide the first controlled break between those phases inside the reactor vessel.
The separator also establishes a hydraulic return path: liquid removed from the upward stream goes back into the vessel instead of being swept into the steam outlet. That arrangement lets the reactor continue circulating water while sending the vapor phase onward for additional drying.

No single efficiency percentage, universal moisture-carryover limit or fleet-wide performance number should be assumed from the general descriptions. Such values depend on the specific reactor design and operating basis. The NRC and IAEA material used here explains the function and arrangement, not a generic rating that applies to every separator.

“Steam separator” describes a function and class of reactor-vessel equipment, not one universal component drawing. The IAEA example uses a fixed axial-flow arrangement with a standpipe and swirl-inducing vanes. Other plants can differ in the number of stages, internal geometry, flow direction and connection to the dryer.

When comparing documented designs, use concrete engineering axes rather than assuming that one layout represents all reactors:

The available descriptions do not support ranking vendors or assigning a general efficiency advantage to one separator arrangement. A technically meaningful comparison requires plant-specific design documentation and operating criteria.
What the separator does not do
- It does not generate the steam. Reactor heat boils the water; the separator removes liquid carried with the resulting mixture.
- It is not the steam dryer. The dryer is a separate assembly above the separators and performs another drying step.
- It is not a universal feature description for PWRs. PWR turbine steam is produced in a separate steam generator rather than by boiling primary coolant in the reactor vessel.
- It is not a consumer replacement part. A separator is specialized, installed reactor-vessel equipment designed for a particular plant.
Installation matters: the Vermont Yankee notice
The NRC’s Information Notice 84-79, dated November 5, 1984, documented a failure to properly install a steam separator at Vermont Yankee. The notice is useful as a historical illustration of why seating and installation of reactor-vessel internals matter. It should not be presented as evidence of a current fleet-wide condition or as current operating guidance.
For readers interpreting that event, the key lesson is limited but important: a separator’s function depends not only on its abstract flow principle, but also on correct placement and fit within the vessel. The historical notice does not establish a present-day failure rate, a universal installation defect or a current requirement for every BWR.
How to read a BWR flow diagram
- Find the reactor core and identify the upward direction of coolant flow.
- Locate the point where the diagram changes from single-phase water to a steam-water mixture.
- Look above the core for labels such as moisture separator, steam separator or separator bank.
- Place the steam dryer above the separator location, unless the specific plant drawing shows a different arrangement.
- Follow the dry-steam outlet to the main steamline and then to the turbine.
- Trace any liquid outlet from the separator back into the reactor-vessel flow path rather than to the turbine line.
This reading method prevents two common errors: treating the separator as the component that boils the water, and treating the separator and dryer as a single device.
The complete process in plain language
Inside a BWR, the core heats water until steam forms. That steam rises while carrying some liquid droplets with it. The moisture separators force the mixture through passages that remove much of the liquid and return it to the vessel. In the fixed axial-flow example, vanes make the flow swirl and centrifugal forces help move water out of the vapor stream. The steam then rises through a separate dryer before leaving through the main steamline for the turbine.
That is the essential role of a steam separator: it is the first major in-vessel barrier against liquid-water carryover on the BWR steam path. Its exact internals vary by reactor design, but its position between the core outlet and the dryer—and its function of returning separated water to vessel flow—define what it does.
