Ars Technica reported in December 2021 that more than 4,500 of 4,661 plots had been pre-sold for about 13,365 ETH, worth more than $54 million at the displayed crypto prices then. Later reporting describes a promised play-to-earn economy that, according to interviewed players, delivered little in their individual cases.
What did the $54 million figure measure?
In December 2021, Ars Technica reported that more than 4,500 of Legacy’s 4,661 virtual plots had been pre-sold for about 13,365 ETH. The publication valued that amount at more than $54 million using the cryptocurrency prices displayed at the time. That is a historical valuation of the crypto associated with listed plot sales; it is not an audited statement of cash proceeds received by the developers or a calculation of buyers’ eventual returns. Ars Technica’s December 2021 report.
Ars Technica’s April 2026 retrospective added important qualifications: its roughly $54 million estimate included cheaper plots distributed to attendees at Gala’s Galaverse event to help prime the market, and some buyers used cryptocurrency they already held or had earned. The retrospective does not provide an audited accounting that separates net cash received, discounted or promotional plots, and buyers’ realized gains or losses. Ars Technica’s April 2026 retrospective.
That distinction matters: the sale figure alone cannot establish that players collectively lost $54 million, or that developers personally received that amount in cash.

- First 4 Figures proudly presents resin collectible—X (Final Weapon) from our Mega Man X lineup!
- The statue captures the moment when X jumps up to strike. With the smoke and broken cables on the base, it makes him look as if he's propelled up by the explosion as well. His signature blue armor has also been beautifully recreated here to bring X to life!
- he base is inspired by the final stage in the video game Mega Man X4, a space station called (Final Weapon) where players, as X, would defeat the boss, Sigma. The mechanical shape is enhanced by the painting and sculpting.

How was Legacy supposed to let players earn?
Legacy was presented as a blockchain business simulation. Players would design products and buildings, use virtual workers to manufacture goods, trade what they made, and compete for rewards denominated in LegacyCoin. The original land sale tied participation in that planned economy to owning virtual plots. Ars Technica’s December 2021 report.
Landowners were described as able to take part themselves or lend access to other players in exchange for a share of earnings. Gala’s 2024 materials later described Legacy Deeds as NFTs that let owners organize and manage Guilds; other players could join a Guild using Legacy Keys. Gala also said that buyers of deeds on secondary markets needed to bridge the deed to GalaChain before configuring a Guild. These materials document how Gala described the system in 2024, not whether it remains available or what a deed is worth today. Gala’s 2024 Guild update.

What did players reportedly earn?
In its April 2026 report, Ars Technica interviewed players who described bugs, a weak in-game economy, and very limited earnings in their own experiences. One interviewed player reported earning $9.84 in the game; another said a high-end plot had earned less than $100. These are individual accounts reported by Ars, not audited figures, an average return, or a measure of all players’ results. The report did not establish an independently verified aggregate player-loss total or player-count dataset. Ars Technica’s April 2026 retrospective.
Those accounts sharply contrast with the proposed earning mechanisms, but they do not by themselves establish the financial outcome for every plot buyer. Original sale valuations, later NFT resale prices, and earnings from playing are different measures; the cited reporting does not provide a complete accounting across them.

What happened after Legacy launched?
Gala announced that Legacy would launch on October 26, 2023. Players interviewed by Ars for its 2026 retrospective described the economy as failing within weeks of launch. Gala’s own dated materials show that it was still publishing updates about Legacy Deeds and Guilds in 2024. These points indicate a reported collapse in player interest or economic activity alongside subsequent updates; they do not prove that the game has shut down. Gala’s launch-date announcement Gala’s 2024 Guild update Ars Technica’s April 2026 retrospective.
The available reporting does not confirm Legacy’s current operational status, current support, token value, or secondary-market deed prices. The 2021 ETH valuation is historical and should not be read as a current NFT or cryptocurrency price.

How did the sale relate to Molyneux’s next game?
Ars’s 2026 report distinguished the players’ reported experience from the project’s business outcome. It reported that Peter Molyneux said the proceeds helped fund Masters of Albion. Former Gala executive Jason “Bitbender” Brink told Ars that Gala paid Molyneux’s studio 22cans a minimum guarantee and that the NFT sales went toward that guarantee. These are attributed statements, not independently verified financial findings. Brink characterized the arrangement by saying, “Legacy was paid for upfront, man.”
Ars also quoted Molyneux in a 2024 interview describing his belief in the model: “We were sold by a company called Gala Games on this—and I’m very susceptible to these ideas—that play-to-earn gaming could be a big thing.” The remarks offer context for the project’s financing and premise, but do not resolve the amount of net proceeds or players’ aggregate returns.
