In NYT Connections, the colors are an editorial difficulty scale: yellow is the easiest, followed generally by green and blue, while purple is the trickiest. The scale is a guide rather than a rule for every player or every puzzle.
The colors also hint at the kind of thinking a group may require. Yellow tends to be direct, blue can depend on specialized trivia, and purple is commonly wordplay. Green and yellow can both use familiar categories or synonyms, so color alone does not reveal a group’s exact theme.

The color order, at a glance
A Connections board has 16 words. Your task is to divide them into four groups of four, with each group sharing one connection. When a group is assigned a color, that color expresses how difficult the editors intend the connection to be.

|---|---|---|---|
| Yellow | Easiest | Direct, familiar categories or straightforward synonyms | Usually the most immediately recognizable relationship |
| Green | Generally less tricky than blue or purple | Everyday groupings, conventional categories, or synonyms | A broad middle ground; it has no single fixed theme |
| Blue | Often harder because of knowledge requirements | Specialized trivia, such as particular films, performers, bands, or other subjects | The connection may be direct if you know the relevant subject |
| Purple | Trickiest | Wordplay, including endings, homophones, or nonliteral relationships | Look beyond what the words mean on the surface |
The New York Times Help Center explicitly identifies yellow as easiest and purple as trickiest. The middle ordering of green before blue is a useful shorthand, not a promise that every green group will feel easier than every blue group. A player who knows a niche band may find a blue group obvious while struggling with a supposedly simple green category.

What the colors actually describe
Color describes the intended difficulty of the connection, not the grammatical type of the words, their part of speech, or the number of possible answers. A yellow group is not required to be a list of objects, and a purple group is not required to use one particular trick. The labels are editorial tendencies across the four groups in a puzzle.
Connections is deliberately built around words that can appear to belong together in more than one way. A word may fit a plausible category while also being needed for the final solution. That design is why a color should be treated as context after you have a credible group, not as proof that your first association is correct.
Yellow: the most straightforward group
Yellow is the clearest difficulty signal in the game. The official Help Center calls it the easiest color, and Connections editor Wyna Liu described yellow as “the most straightforward” in a November 28, 2024 interview with The Atlantic.
In practice, a yellow connection is often visible from ordinary knowledge. It might collect familiar members of a broad category, or words that are clear synonyms. The important feature is directness: once the intended relationship is noticed, the four words should make sense without a specialized reference or a linguistic trick.
Do not turn “easiest” into “obvious to everyone.” A category can be familiar in one culture, age group, or hobby and less familiar in another. Yellow is the editors’ relative difficulty judgment for that board, not a guarantee about your personal experience.

Green: a flexible, relatively accessible category
Green occupies the less-tricky side of the usual color spectrum, but it does not stand for one recurring subject. Liu has described yellow and green as colors that can contain everyday groupings or synonym-based connections. That means green may look much like yellow in a particular puzzle.
The distinction is comparative rather than categorical. A green group may require one extra interpretive step, a narrower category, or more careful separation from a tempting yellow group. It can also be a familiar set whose members are obscured by the way the words are presented. There is no official rule that green always means a specific difficulty level, topic, or word relationship.

Blue: knowledge can be the main obstacle
Blue often signals a connection that is more specialized. Liu has given trivia as an example, including subjects such as movies or particular bands. If you know the relevant filmography, discography, sport, profession, or other domain, the four words may form a direct set; without that background, the group can seem arbitrary.
This is why blue difficulty is partly personal. The color does not mean the connection is inherently obscure or that the words are linked by wordplay. It can simply indicate that the answer depends on a smaller pool of knowledge than the everyday categories typically associated with yellow or green.
When a possible blue group appears, test every member against the same reference point. Four words that each remind you of a topic are not enough if one belongs to a different installment, performer, or subcategory. Connections requires four exact members, not a general association.

Purple: usually wordplay rather than literal meaning
Purple is the game’s strongest warning that the surface meanings may be a distraction. Liu summarized it this way: “Purple is the wordplay category. The four words in that group are not defined by their literal meanings. It’s words that end with ___ or homophones or something.”
That description covers several mechanisms. A purple set might consist of words that become related when they share an ending, words that sound alike despite different spellings, or terms that satisfy a linguistic pattern rather than a common real-world category. The exact device changes from puzzle to puzzle, so learning that purple is wordplay does not reveal the answer by itself.
Read a purple candidate aloud, inspect prefixes and suffixes, and consider sound as well as meaning. Then check that all four words obey the same rule. A pair of homophones plus two merely related words is not a valid group.
Why the ranking is not a guarantee
The Times’ color system is an editorial judgment, not a quantified difficulty meter. No published statistic establishes how reliably each color predicts a particular player’s success or solve time. The labels are useful expectations, but they do not assign an objective score to a category.
Connections editor testers rate puzzles for difficulty and consider whether the colors match their experience. Liu has said that a single board can receive a range of ratings. That variation is expected: word knowledge, cultural familiarity, comfort with trivia, and sensitivity to wordplay all change which group feels hardest.

The same board can therefore produce different reactions without the color assignment being contradictory. A trivia specialist may dispatch blue first, while another player may find the blue group inaccessible and solve purple through a familiar sound pattern. “Trickiest” describes the intended relative challenge, not a required order of play.
How to use colors while solving
Colors are most useful as a way to audit your interpretation of a solved or suspected group. They should not replace the requirement to prove all four words belong together.
- Start with the most direct relationship you can prove. Look for a clean category or a set of unmistakable synonyms. This is the kind of connection often associated with yellow, but do not assume the first familiar pattern is correct.
- Require four members before committing. A convincing pair or trio is only a hypothesis. Find a fourth word that follows exactly the same rule and check whether any of the four has a stronger role elsewhere.
- Separate broad categories from near-misses. If five words could fit a general theme, identify the narrower definition that selects exactly four. The leftover word is often the deliberate trap.
- Reserve knowledge-dependent ideas for a full check. For a possible blue group, name the precise film series, band, profession, or other domain that unites all four words. A vague “these remind me of” connection is not sufficient.
- Change how you read the leftovers. Once literal categories are exhausted, examine spelling, pronunciation, endings, and other formal features. Those are the avenues most associated with purple.
- Use the revealed color as feedback, not an instruction. A yellow result confirms a relatively direct intended connection; a purple result tells you the editors classified the relationship as the most difficult. Neither result says you should always solve groups in that order.
Common misconceptions about each color
“Purple always means words with the same ending.”
Endings are one example of purple wordplay, not a permanent template. Homophones and other nonliteral relationships also fit the editor’s description. Look for the rule actually shared by the four words.
“Blue always means pop culture.”
Movies and bands are examples of specialized trivia, not an exclusive definition. Blue can involve any subject where a narrower body of knowledge is the main barrier.

“Yellow and green identify the exact type of connection.”
They do not. Their colors indicate a broad difficulty tendency. You still need to state the actual category or rule in your own words and verify all four entries.
“The hardest color must be solved last.”
There is no mandated solve order. A purple group can become your easiest discovery if its wordplay clicks immediately, while a yellow group can remain elusive if its category is outside your experience.
Why misleading overlaps are part of the design
The Help Center explains that each puzzle has exactly one solution even though words may appear to fit multiple categories. Those overlaps create the central deduction problem: a plausible grouping can be intentionally incomplete or can consume a word needed for a different group.
Recommended Free Tools
When two candidate categories share a word, compare the complete four-word sets rather than choosing the most familiar phrase. Ask which interpretation leaves three coherent groups of four, and whether every member follows one precise rule. This is an inference from the game’s stated one-solution structure, not a promise that a particular visual pattern will always identify the answer.
Editors curate the words and categories using the Oxford Dictionary, according to the Help Center. That editorial process helps explain why ordinary words can support carefully bounded meanings, alternate pronunciations, or less obvious senses. It also means a dictionary-valid connection may still be unfamiliar to an individual player.
What to remember when a color feels wrong
If a yellow group feels impossible, your difficulty is not evidence that the color system has failed. Check whether the intended category is culturally specific, whether one word is a decoy, and whether you are relying on a broad association instead of an exact four-word set. If blue feels easy, your subject knowledge may simply match the puzzle. If purple feels obvious, you may have recognized the relevant wordplay quickly.
The most reliable interpretation is therefore two-part: color gives a relative editorial difficulty signal, while the words themselves determine the solution. Yellow points toward directness, blue can point toward specialized knowledge, and purple often points toward wordplay; green remains a flexible middle category. Treat those signals as hints about how to think, then let the four-word rule decide.
