For a college player, reaching the NBA Draft means clearing several separate hurdles: meeting NBA age and eligibility rules, deciding whether to enter early, handling NBA and college withdrawal deadlines, completing required evaluation activities, and waiting for a team to use a pick. Being eligible to enter does not guarantee selection, and the draft order is not a ranking of colleges.
First, meet the NBA’s eligibility threshold
For U.S. players, the NBA/NBPA’s 2024–25 CBA 101 summary says a player must be at least 19 by the end of the calendar year in which the draft is held and at least one year removed from high school. See the NBA and NBPA CBA 101 summary.
This answers whether a player may enter the NBA Draft; it does not determine whether the player can continue playing college basketball. NCAA eligibility is governed separately, and the two questions should not be treated as interchangeable.
Decide whether to enter early
A player who is not automatically eligible can file as an early-entry candidate. Filing begins a decision process; it does not mean the player has been drafted or must ultimately remain in the draft.
#1 Best Overall
The NBA reported 71 early-entry candidates for the 2026 draft. That is a count for that specific cycle, not a typical annual total. The league’s 2026 early-entry announcement lists the candidates.
Track two withdrawal deadlines
Withdrawing from NBA consideration and preserving NCAA eligibility are separate matters, with separate deadlines and consequences. In its 2026 announcement, the NBA said college players who had entered the draft needed to withdraw by May 27 to retain college basketball eligibility. Early-entry candidates could withdraw from NBA consideration by notifying the league in writing by 5 p.m. ET on June 13. The dates applied to the 2026 cycle only; they are not standing annual deadlines. The NBA’s 2026 announcement gives both dates.

A player considering a future draft should confirm that cycle’s NBA deadline and the applicable NCAA and school-compliance rules. The dates can differ, so meeting one deadline does not establish that the other has been met.
Take part in evaluation, including the NBA Draft Combine
The NBA describes the Draft Combine as a week-long event featuring skill drills, scrimmages, official measurements, and opportunities to meet team officials. It gives teams ways to evaluate prospects; it is not itself a draft or a guarantee of selection. The NBA’s 2026 Draft FAQ explains the Combine.

Combine invitations also carry an obligation. The NBA/NBPA CBA 101 summary says invited players must attend and participate, including in medical testing. Unless excused, an invited player who does not fully participate is not eligible to be drafted. See the CBA 101 summary.

The NBA Draft has two rounds. The 2026 event used a two-night format, with the first round on June 23 and the second on June 24; those dates are historical examples, not future event dates. The NBA’s 2026 Draft FAQ describes that cycle’s format.

How the selection order is set
For 2026, the NBA said the lottery determined the first 14 first-round selections. The remaining first-round positions and the second-round order followed reverse regular-season record, subject to pick ownership and other rules. The NBA Constitution and By-Laws provide the governing framework for the lottery and selections: NBA Draft FAQ and NBA Constitution and By-Laws.
Teams can trade picks. The team that owns or exercises a selection may therefore differ from the college the player attended; a player’s college does not determine which team gets the pick.

What this process does—and does not—decide
- NBA eligibility determines whether a player can enter under league rules; it does not guarantee a draft selection.
- College eligibility is a separate question, with its own rules and withdrawal deadline.
- Early entry, Combine evaluation, and draft order are distinct stages: completing one does not promise the next outcome.
