It first caught attention in a Nintendo Today! app screenshot in March 2025, when its purpose had not yet been explained; Nintendo’s current feature page now identifies it as a shortcut for starting a chat.
What does the Switch 2 C Button do?
Pressing the C Button on the right Joy-Con 2 starts GameChat, Nintendo’s system-level feature for chatting and sharing gameplay. Nintendo says the button lets players get started without pausing the action. Nintendo’s GameChat page is the current source for the button’s function and feature details.

What did the Nintendo Today! app screenshot show?
The original story was a discovery, not an explanation. BGR reported on March 28, 2025, that the sixth screenshot in the Nintendo Today! App Store listing showed a small Switch 2 image with a visible C marking on the right Joy-Con. At the time, the button’s purpose was unconfirmed. BGR’s report records that initial uncertainty.
9to5Toys also covered the screenshot and noted that the app listing was updated with new C Button images on April 2, 2025. That chronology helps explain why older coverage called the control mysterious; it is no longer an open question. 9to5Toys’ report and update provide the additional timeline.
