Videos reported in January 2025 showed a model supplied by gaming accessory maker Genki, depicting a larger Nintendo Switch 2 with controllers that snap on. That was Genki’s model—not a Nintendo announcement or a demonstration of a confirmed retail console. Nintendo later confirmed the final system’s larger 7.9-inch display and magnetic Joy-Con 2 attachment.
What did the January 2025 videos show?
Ars Technica reported on videos of a Switch 2 model supplied by Genki, an accessory maker. The report described the model’s larger form and snap-on controllers. Those videos showed Genki’s model, not verified measurements or proof of the final console’s design; Nintendo had not yet made its official announcement. Ars Technica’s report is the contemporaneous account.
Nintendo subsequently announced Switch 2 for June 5, 2025, confirming that the retail console has a 7.9-inch display and Joy-Con 2 controllers that connect magnetically. The later specifications establish that the real system is larger than the original Switch, but they do not validate every detail of Genki’s model.
How large is the finished Switch 2?
Nintendo lists the console at approximately 4.5 inches tall, 10.7 inches wide, and 0.55 inches thick with Joy-Con 2 attached. Its 7.9-inch display gives the handheld a substantially larger screen than the original Switch. The dimensions offer a concrete scale reference; the Genki model’s exact measurements were not established in the report.

How do the Switch 2 Joy-Cons snap on?
Joy-Con 2 connects to the sides of the console using magnets. To remove one, press the release button on its back. Nintendo’s developers describe the connector as a deliberate design choice: Takuhiro Dohta said, “We originally chose to incorporate magnets for their functionality and convenience, but in the end, everyone on the Technology Development team fine-tuned it – right down to the satisfying "snap" feeling when you attach the controllers to the console.”

- These updated Joy-Con 2 controllers have a color scheme inspired by Deep Cut from the Splatoon franchise. They have HD rumble, easy-to-use motion and mouse controls, and a C Button for easy GameChat* access (available in compatible games).
The magnetic connector replaces the original Joy-Con’s rail attachment. Nintendo says Joy-Con 2 is larger and was redesigned for the bigger console, including changes to button placement and shape intended to keep the controller comfortable to use. The design and attachment details are discussed in Nintendo’s developer interview.
