For Greatsword damage in PvE, start with Relentless Rush, Crosscut, and Skyward Slash. For a mobile PvP setup, use Relentless Rush, Skyward Slash, and Steadfast Strike. These recommendations come from guides last updated in 2025, not a fresh balance test: Amazon Games delisted New World on January 15, 2026, and says its servers are planned to shut down on January 31, 2027. The game remains playable for previous purchasers during the service period. Amazon’s service notice also says no new content or further server merges are planned.
Which Greatsword abilities should you use?
Choose the skill bar for the job rather than trying to make one setup serve every mode. PvE rewards damage and Rend uptime; PvP puts more value on closing distance, stopping a target, and escaping pressure. The table summarizes the two damage-oriented starting points described in guides updated through 2025. Exact skill values may have changed after those guides were updated.

The PvE and PvP bars reflect the recommendations in Icy Veins’ Greatsword guide. Its tank setup is a distinct role, not a damage build with one skill swapped.
How to build Greatsword for PvE
Damage skills and rotation
Use Relentless Rush to deal area damage and gain an empower, Skyward Slash to apply Rend, and Crosscut for a concentrated damage window. Crosscut can also hit grouped enemies, so it becomes more useful after the party gathers targets.

- Use Relentless Rush to gain its empower.
- Use Skyward Slash to apply Rend.
- Use Crosscut for damage.
- Dodge to gain empower, then land three heavy attacks.
- Dodge again for empower and repeat the sequence when the opening allows.
This is a cited single-target sequence, not a requirement to follow it rigidly through every encounter. Adjust around enemy attacks, movement, and the need to defend. Onslaught heavy attacks consume stamina, so repeated dodges and heavy swings can leave you unable to dodge when you need to.
Attributes and secondary weapon
The Icy Veins Greatsword-and-Hatchet PvE guide recommends 300 Strength and roughly 50–100 Constitution for that particular build. Treat those numbers as one guide’s setup, not universal breakpoints: attribute distribution depends on content, role, and weapon pairing.

Hatchet is presented as a damage and survival partner. Its suggested rotation uses Berserk, Rending Throw, and Raging Torrent, with Defy Death as an emergency survival tool. A Great Axe is another possible partner when grouping and area damage are priorities. Neither pairing is mandatory or established as universally better.
How to build Greatsword for PvP
Mobile damage setup
Relentless Rush, Skyward Slash, and Steadfast Strike provide a mix of movement, Rend, and control. Open with Skyward Slash—or a heavy attack if Slash is on cooldown—to enter Onslaught and apply Rend. Use Rush for damage and, if the stance and selected upgrade allow it, to root the target. Charge a heavy attack when the opponent gives you an opening; use Steadfast Strike to lunge, stagger, and pull a target trying to get away.

Rush can also help escape roots or slows when its utility perk is selected. Its root depends on being in Onslaught, so enter that stance first through another Onslaught ability or a heavy attack. These are tactical openings, not a fixed combo: do not spend your stamina or defensive options blindly to force the sequence.
Mode-specific Greatsword and Hatchet option
StudioLoot’s Greatsword-Hatchet PvP build is specifically aimed at Outpost Rush and 3v3 Arena. It is a light-armor, burst-oriented chase approach using Rush, Slash, and Steadfast Strike alongside Hatchet utility. Use it as an example for those modes, not as a universal answer for every PvP activity or play style.

How stance choice affects damage and survival
The Greatsword alternates between offensive Onslaught and defensive Defiance stances. Amazon’s official Greatsword guide attributes this guidance to the New World Design Team: proficient players switch to the defensive stance when targeted and return to offense when enemy aggro is elsewhere. The guide warns that choosing the wrong stance can mean dealing less damage or losing substantial health.
That makes stance awareness part of the build, not an optional refinement. Onslaught supports offensive pressure, but its heavy attacks use stamina; Defiance is the safer response when you are absorbing enemy attention. Watch both your stance and stamina before committing to another heavy attack or dodge.

Which perks suit PvE and PvP?
The official guide quotes Baggins on two perk choices: “If you’re more of a PvP Orientated player, Calamity Counter will likely be more beneficial for you, whereas more PvE orientated players will find Leeching Crosscut a great option to keep their health topped off while fighting.” This is guidance attributed to Baggins, not a claim that either perk is best in every build.
In practical terms, Calamity Counter fits a PvP preference for counterplay, while Leeching Crosscut supports sustain in PvE. Consider the rest of your weapon pairing, role, and encounter before choosing.
What changes between PvE, PvP, and tank builds?

These distinctions explain why there is no single “best” Greatsword bar for all content. Select around the encounter or PvP mode, your secondary weapon, and whether your role is damage, chase, or tanking.
How current are these New World Greatsword builds?
The detailed general guide used here was last updated August 4, 2025; the Greatsword-Hatchet PvE guide records an October 2024 expansion update, and the Outpost Rush/3v3 PvP guide was last updated October 11, 2025. None establishes that every skill value remained unchanged afterward, so treat the builds as documented starting points rather than newly tested live-client recommendations.
Amazon Games’ January 15, 2026 notice says New World was delisted that day, remains playable to existing purchasers, and is planned to go offline on January 31, 2027.
