For a Survival cave trip, pack a pickaxe, light, food, a weapon, armor suited to your progress, wood, a water bucket and inexpensive blocks. Mark your route as you go: the supplies help you deal with mining, darkness and hazards, while a consistent marker system makes it easier to find your way back.

What to bring for a Minecraft cave trip

There is no universal pack quantity: how much you need depends on the trip’s length, the cave and how much you craft underground. Start with the essentials below, then add backups or optional tools to match your plan. The Minecraft Wiki cave tutorial and its mining guide support this practical loadout.

Core supplies

  • Pickaxe: Bring at least one usable pickaxe for mining and clearing stone. A spare can be worthwhile on a longer expedition, but there is no single quantity that suits every trip.
  • Light: Carry torches, or bring wood and coal so you can craft more. Light the route as you explore; if you plan to descend into deep deepslate, bring enough supplies to make light before you go, since coal may be less available there.
  • Food: Pack filling food for a trip that may take longer than expected. Cooked porkchop and cooked salmon are examples, not required choices.
  • Weapon and armor: Bring a weapon for hostile mobs and wear armor appropriate to your progression. The cave tutorial warns that exploring unarmored is dangerous and says iron or better armor may be needed; treat that as guidance, not a universal entry requirement.
  • Wood or logs: These let you craft torches and other useful items underground. Carrying the base material gives you flexibility, and you can make intermediate materials only when needed to save inventory space.
  • Water bucket: Water can help with fire, lava and vertical terrain, including descending into or climbing out of some areas. It does not make lava safe.
  • Cheap blocks: Dirt, cobblestone or another suitable block can help bridge gaps, build upward or reach ledges.

Optional items for particular trips

  • A shovel speeds up work in dirt and gravel.
  • A bow or shield can support you in combat.
  • A compass may help in some circumstances, but its value for finding home depends on where world spawn is or whether the compass is linked to a lodestone.
  • Signs or distinctive blocks can supplement torch markers at major junctions.

How to stay safe and find your way back

Caves branch and intersect, so choose a route-marking convention and follow it consistently. One method from the cave tutorial is to place torches on your right as you go deeper. On the return, keep them on your left; that indicates the direction back. The side itself is arbitrary—the consistency is what matters. In a complicated cave, add a sign or distinctive block at major junctions.

Light explored areas as you go. The amount of light you need varies with the trip, cave size, game version and how much you craft underground, so do not rely on a fixed torch count. The Minecraft beginner guide also describes cave play in terms of lighting the route, mining ores and dealing with enemies you encounter.

A water bucket and blocks can help with awkward terrain and hazards, but neither removes all risk. The official Caves & Cliffs Part II preparation guide frames underground safety as a practical concern; adapt your equipment to the cave and your level of preparation rather than treating any item as a guarantee.

Adjust the loadout to the trip

  • Short exploration: Prioritize a usable pickaxe, enough light and food, a weapon, suitable armor and route markers.
  • Longer expedition: Carry extra supplies or wood for crafting underground, and consider a spare pickaxe. The trade-off is inventory space.
  • Mining-focused travel: Keep the pickaxe and light-making supplies central; bring a shovel if you expect to work through dirt or gravel.
  • Unfamiliar or vertical terrain: A water bucket and cheap blocks can offer more ways to manage drops, gaps and ledges, without guaranteeing safety.

These are planning choices, not standardized loadouts. Pick quantities according to how long you expect to be underground, your progression and the cave you are entering.
