Before buying a game collectible described as ivory, bone, precious stone, prototype material, artist-made, exceptionally old, or otherwise rare, turn every important claim into written, item-specific evidence. Confirm exactly what the object is made from, who made it, where and when it came from, what treatments or repairs it has had, and whether you may legally own or ship it. Then compare those records with the actual photographs and preserve the marketplace’s return and payment protections.
Appearance is not authentication. A lab-created gemstone can share the chemical, physical and visual properties of a natural stone, while an imitation can look similar but be made from something else. Certificates can cover one attribute without proving another. The safest purchase is one where the seller’s statements, documents, item photographs, transaction terms and legal status all describe the same physical object.

Start by defining the exact collectible
“Rare,” “original,” “genuine,” “ivory,” “prototype,” and “limited” are conclusions, not descriptions. Write down the object you are considering before evaluating the claim: for example, a boxed game with a carved inlay, a controller with an unusual handle material, a statue containing a stone, or a signed development sample. Note the edition, region, platform, serial or production number, dimensions, accessories, packaging and every component said to be unusual.

A controller may have a replacement shell, a statue may contain a small insert, and a cartridge may have a reproduction label. Ask the seller to identify each unusual component rather than accepting a category label for the whole item.

Separate the claims you are actually buying
- Material: What substance is present, and where? Is it natural, cultured, lab-created, imitation, treated, repaired or composite?
- Maker: Which person, studio, manufacturer or development team made it? Is the signature or mark original?
- Origin: Where was it produced and how did it reach the current seller?
- Age and edition: Is it contemporary, period-made, a prototype, a pre-release sample, or a later reproduction?
- Condition: Are parts missing, replaced, refinished, re-cased or restored?
- Legality: Does the material or species trigger ownership, sale, import or export rules?
Ask for each answer in writing. Keep the listing, messages, photographs, invoices and any attachments in one folder. The written record is useful if the item differs from its description or a marketplace claim deadline approaches.
Verify what the unusual material actually is
Do not use color, grain, translucency, weight or feel as a conclusive material test. Similar-looking substances can have different compositions, and a surface treatment can conceal what lies beneath. The Federal Trade Commission explains that lab-created gemstones share the chemical, physical and visual properties of natural stones, while imitation stones use different materials and do not share those properties: FTC guidance on buying gemstones, diamonds and pearls.
Questions for the seller
- What is the precise material name, including the species or mineral where relevant?
- Which parts contain it, and approximately how much of the object does it represent?
- Is it natural, cultured, lab-created, imitation, dyed, stabilized, coated, filled, reconstructed or composite?
- Has any part been replaced, repaired, re-carved, re-plated or refinished?
- What examination supports the identification, and who performed it?
- Is there an independent laboratory or specialist report, and does it identify this exact item?
For a gemstone component, ask that the paperwork state origin, weight or size, treatments and care requirements; these are details the FTC identifies as important in gemstone purchasing. For a cultural or artist-made game object, request written proof of authenticity or origin and a receipt that records the material and maker claims, consistent with the FTC’s advice on American Indian arts and crafts: FTC guidance on buying American Indian arts and crafts.

Understand what a test can and cannot prove
A materials report may identify a substance without proving who made the object, its age or its ownership history. An appraisal may estimate value without establishing composition. A provenance document may show that an item belonged to someone without proving that a replacement part was not inserted later. Ask the issuer to state the examination performed, the parts examined, the conclusion and the limits of that conclusion.
The reviewed official guidance does not establish one universal test kit, certification body or authentication process for every collectible. When the unusual material determines a substantial part of the price, use a qualified specialist whose expertise matches both the material and the type of game object, and obtain the scope and limitations of the opinion in writing.

Put maker, origin, treatment and age claims on the paperwork
Before payment, ask for a receipt or sales contract that identifies the exact item and records the claims that influenced your decision. A useful description includes platform or product name, edition or region, serial number when present, dimensions, materials and locations, maker or studio, claimed date, condition, repairs, signatures, included accessories and the agreed price.
Use an item-specific description
“Vintage controller with ivory” is not enough. A stronger entry would identify which component is claimed to contain ivory, describe its position and distinguishing marks, and attach photographs of that component. For a gemstone-inlaid statue, record the stone type claimed, its location, stated treatment and any report number. For a prototype cartridge, record the board, label, shell, markings and the evidence supporting the prototype claim.

Ask the seller to state whether the claim is based on direct examination, an earlier invoice, a published catalogue, an expert opinion or hearsay. A seller’s confidence is not a substitute for a source. If a material, age or maker claim cannot be written clearly, treat that uncertainty as part of the item’s condition and price.
Keep the original evidence
- Save the complete listing, including images, title, description and seller username.
- Export or screenshot messages in which the seller answers your questions.
- Keep the receipt, invoice, payment confirmation and shipping record.
- Save reports, catalogues, letters and photographs in their original form.
- Record the date you received the item and photograph the package before opening it.
Match every document to the physical object
A certificate with a matching category word can still belong to another item. Compare the document with the exact object in the listing and with the object delivered to you. Look for the whole-object description, close views of marks, signatures, serial numbers, material placement, dimensions and photographs that show the same wear or defects.
Check the issuer and the examination
- Who issued the document, and what qualifications are relevant to this material and collectible type?
- When was it issued, and what object identification or report number does it use?
- Does it say what was physically examined, or does it merely repeat the seller’s description?
- Does the conclusion cover material, maker, age, origin, condition or only one of those?
- Can the issuer confirm the report independently through a published contact channel?
Do not assume a document is independent because it is printed on headed paper. A seller-issued certificate may be useful evidence of what the seller claims, but it does not automatically establish authenticity.

Use the item-matching model from UK ivory guidance
UK government guidance for ivory registration and exemptions offers a precise matching model: compare the item type, ivory components, distinguishing features and photographs with the registration or exemption evidence, and ask for copies of supporting evidence. This model is useful as a documentation discipline even when your collectible is not ivory; the legal rules themselves are jurisdiction-specific. See “Buy or hire ivory items” from the UK government.

Provenance is the sequence of evidence connecting an object to its claimed maker, date, place or owners. One dramatic anecdote is weaker than several ordinary records that agree with one another and with the object’s physical features.
Evidence that can form a chain
- Dated receipts, bills of sale or auction invoices describing the object.
- Dated catalogues or publications containing matching descriptions or photographs.
- Date marks, production marks, serial numbers or contemporaneous packaging.
- Documented ownership history with names, dates and transfers.
- A specialist’s written age or material opinion identifying the examined item.
- Radiocarbon dating where appropriate and legally or scientifically relevant.
These examples are drawn from UK ivory dealing guidance and are examples of age-verification evidence in that regime, not a universal authentication standard for every game collectible. Read the guidance at “Deal in items made of or containing ivory”.
Look for gaps and contradictions
Check whether the claimed date fits the game’s release, the manufacturer’s production history and the materials used at that time. A box may be period-correct while the cartridge or controller inside is later. A signature can be genuine but added after manufacture. A catalogue image can establish that a similar model existed without proving that the seller’s unit is the pictured one.
Ask the seller to explain missing years, changes in ownership, conflicting dimensions or photographs that show different parts. Do not fill a gap with an assumption merely because the story sounds plausible.

Investigate the seller and marketplace before paying
Marketplace protections differ by platform and may have short claim windows. Read the exact policy that applies to this seller, category and payment method before committing. The FTC’s guidance on online marketplaces recommends checking coverage, deadlines, seller information and the item’s actual photographs: FTC guidance on buying from an online marketplace.
Check the transaction terms
- Find the return, refund and “item not as described” policy.
- Confirm the deadline for opening a claim and whether a return shipment is required.
- Check whether the policy excludes collectibles, altered items, protected materials or off-platform payments.
- Confirm which party pays return shipping and whether the seller can require an appraisal.
- Pay through the marketplace or another method that preserves documented buyer protection.
Do not move the conversation or payment off-platform if doing so removes the protection you are relying on. Keep seller answers in the marketplace message system when possible.
Assess the listing itself
- Are there multiple photographs of the actual item, including flaws, marks, seams and material locations?
- Do the images show stock photography, or can you identify the same object in every view?
- Does the description disclose repairs, substitutions, restorations and missing accessories?
- Are contact details and recent reviews consistent, and do reviews describe resolved problems rather than only star ratings?
- Is the price dramatically below comparable documented examples without a clear explanation?
The FTC notes that an unusually low price for an expensive item can be a warning sign, but price is only one clue. A low price may reflect damage, incomplete documentation or a seller who wants a fast sale; it does not prove either authenticity or fraud.

Material and species laws can apply even when an object is old, inherited, partly made from a substitute or advertised as a collectible. Ownership, sale, import and export can each have different requirements. Check the law where you are buying, where the seller is located and every country through which the item will travel.
UK ivory example
UK guidance requires buyers to check registration or exemption for items made of or containing listed ivory species before taking ownership. The cited guidance covers elephant, hippopotamus, killer whale, narwhal and sperm whale ivory. The registration or exemption evidence must correspond to the item’s type, ivory components, distinguishing features and photographs. This is a UK-specific example, not a rule for every collectible or country. Other protected-species, cultural-property, import or export permits may apply. If a disputed material claim could change whether you may possess or ship the item, pause the transaction and obtain advice from the relevant authority or a qualified legal professional before paying.
Do not confuse substitutes with permission
Calling a component “synthetic,” “antique-style” or “not real ivory” does not by itself resolve legal status. The precise species or material, the object’s location and the jurisdiction determine which rules apply. Ask for a written material identification and check the law for that exact description.
Compare two candidates with the same evidence standards
When two collectibles appear similar, score the evidence rather than choosing the more attractive story. Use the following axes and record what is established, what is supported indirectly and what remains unknown.

“Not stated” is a valid result in your notes. It is better to identify an unanswered question than to convert silence into a positive claim.
Inspect the item when it arrives
- Photograph the unopened package, labels and visible damage.
- Record an unedited opening video if the marketplace’s rules allow it.
- Compare the object with the saved listing photographs, dimensions, marks and accessories.
- Check the unusual material’s location and condition without sanding, polishing, disassembling or applying chemicals.
- Compare serial numbers, signatures, seams, screws, labels and packaging with the documents.
- Contact the seller promptly in writing if anything differs, and preserve the packaging until the dispute is resolved.
Do not perform a destructive or irreversible home test to “prove” a material. It can damage a collectible, invalidate a return or create a new dispute about condition. If the result affects a high-value claim, use an independent specialist and ask for a non-destructive method where practical.
Red flags that should pause the purchase
- The seller will not identify the material or put the claim on the receipt.
- A certificate has a broad category label but no photographs, serial number or description of the examined item.
- Photographs show a different object, stock images or only the best side.
- The provenance consists of an unverifiable story with no dated records.
- Repairs, substitutions or treatments are disclosed only after repeated questioning.
- The seller insists on off-platform payment or creates urgency around a short, unexplained deadline.
- Legal documents are missing, expired, mismatched or described as unnecessary because the item is “old.”
- The price is far below expectations and the explanation does not match the condition or evidence.
Any one warning can have an innocent explanation. Several together mean you should slow down, request documentation or walk away rather than paying for an unresolved claim.
A practical decision rule
Buy only when the claim that drives the price is both specific and supported, the documents match the physical item, the legal route is clear for your jurisdiction and the transaction gives you a realistic way to return or dispute the purchase. If one of those conditions is missing, price the object as an unverified collectible or do not proceed.
