Before buying a digital game, verify that it works on your exact device, that the edition includes what you expect, and that its online and account requirements fit how you play. Then check the store’s refund rules before downloading or preloading: eligibility can depend on the platform, region, and product type.
Use this checklist before checkout
- Confirm the exact platform and generation. Check the product page for your console model or PC storefront and operating system. A search result for a franchise is not proof that a particular version runs on your device.
- Read the edition name and contents. Make sure you are buying the base game rather than an upgrade pack, expansion, season pass, or other add-on. Check whether listed bonus content is included in the purchase or requires a separate download or in-game claim.
- Check play modes and online requirements. Confirm local and online player counts, cross-play, internet access, account requirements, and whether a paid online membership is needed for the mode you want.
- Check PC requirements against your actual computer. Compare the game’s own minimum and recommended operating system, processor, graphics hardware, memory, and storage requirements with your PC. Also confirm which store or launcher will hold the entitlement.
- Understand account ownership and household access. Find out which account receives the purchase and how the platform handles a second console, offline play, or other profiles in your household. Do not assume that one purchase automatically works on every console or account.
- Read the regional refund and preorder policy before starting a download. Look up the rules for the exact store, country, and item type. Downloading, streaming, preloading, or launching may affect eligibility.
Use the game’s own product listing for compatibility, edition contents, modes, and requirements; use the platform’s support page for account and refund rules; and inspect the final checkout screen for the regional price and any tax. Prices and taxes vary by region and are determined at checkout.

Check compatibility and edition details
PlayStation
Confirm the PlayStation generation and version listed for the game. If you are buying on PC, use the requirements for that specific title rather than assuming that a PlayStation game listing establishes PC compatibility. Sony’s games support hub illustrates the kind of title-specific PC requirements information available for some games.
Xbox
Look at the supported platforms and features on the exact Xbox Store listing. A single listing may describe more than one platform or capabilities such as multiplayer, cross-platform play, cloud saves, or catalog availability; those details apply to that title, not to every Xbox game. For example, the Halo Infinite listing shows how these details can appear together.

PC
“Available on PC” does not tell you whether a game will run well—or at all—on your machine. Check the publisher or selling store’s current requirements for the exact game, including storage space, then compare them with your computer. Confirm whether the purchase is for Steam, Microsoft Store, or another storefront: the account entitlement and refund process belong to the seller’s store.
Nintendo Switch and Switch 2
Check whether the listing is for the original Switch game, a Switch 2 Edition, or an upgrade pack. Nintendo says Switch 2 Edition features are playable only on Switch 2; the original Switch game may remain playable on Switch, but upgrade-pack contents vary by game. Some upgrade packs may be available to eligible Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members, so check the specific title and current membership conditions in Nintendo’s Switch 2 Edition upgrade guidance.

Make sure the purchase includes what you want
Edition labels can conceal important differences. Compare the product page’s included-content list with the item in your cart. Look for whether it contains the full game, a remaster, a platform upgrade, an expansion, a season pass, or only downloadable content. If you already own the base game, verify that the add-on matches its platform and edition.
Read any notes about how content is accessed. Nintendo’s Minecraft for Nintendo Switch listing, for example, says the full game is required to use DLC and notes that some included packs must be downloaded from the in-game store. Its play-mode, online, and Switch Lite notices are specific to that listing; they should not be treated as rules for every Switch game.

Check multiplayer, internet, and subscription requirements
Match the listed modes to the way you intend to play. A game can support local multiplayer but require internet access for online features, or offer cross-play only on particular platforms. Check whether online play requires a platform account or paid membership, and whether the requirement applies to the whole game or only selected features.
Nintendo’s Minecraft listing says its online features require internet access, a Nintendo Account, and Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo also notes that exceptions to its online-service requirements exist, so verify the named game rather than assuming every title needs a subscription. On Xbox, inspect the individual listing’s supported multiplayer and cross-platform features; the features shown for Halo Infinite are not a template for other games.

Know which account and console can use the game
A digital purchase is an account entitlement, and household access depends on the platform’s current sharing system. On Nintendo Switch, Nintendo says digital purchases are tied to the buyer’s Nintendo Account. Its digital game purchase guidance describes virtual game cards and use across consoles: a console that has the virtual game card loaded allows any user on that console to play it; on a console that cannot load virtual game cards, the purchasing account can play with an internet connection, while other users on that console cannot. Check the current rules for your account and consoles before relying on shared or offline access.

There is no single refund rule for digital games across platforms. Policies can also differ by country, item type, and whether a download or stream has begun. The following examples describe the linked official pages, not universal consumer-rights rules; local law may provide additional rights.

For a preorder, pay particular attention to the release date, cancellation timing, and any automatic download or preload setting. On PlayStation, automatic downloads can start without a manual launch, so check the console’s settings as well as the policy before placing an order you may want to cancel.
Compare two listings without missing a trade-off
If the same game is available in multiple editions or stores, compare the actual listings rather than just their headline names. Use one row per option and check each of these fields:

- Upgrade price or entitlement, if you already own another version.
- PC hardware requirements and storage, if applicable.

- Which account owns the purchase and how console sharing works.
- Regional price and tax shown at checkout.
- Refund and preorder terms for that seller and region.
Optional purchase-safety checks
- Confirm the account shown at checkout is the one that should own the game.
- If a child uses the console or account, review purchase controls and approval settings before saving payment details.
- Keep the order confirmation and note any preorder or download settings that could affect cancellation eligibility.
