A steep discount alone does not establish that a console is faulty—or that it is a bargain. Marketplace protections, returns, and warranties vary by country, platform, seller, and item.
Start with the seller and the listing
Check who is selling it
Read recent seller feedback and look for contact details. Search independently for complaints, rather than relying only on marketplace star ratings. Check the marketplace’s refund process to see whether it covers this seller and this kind of item. Ask questions before buying and keep the answers in the marketplace message history or another written record.
Make sure the photos and description match the item
Look for several clear photos of the actual console, including its ports, controls, labels, and included accessories. Stock images cannot show the condition of the specific unit or establish that the seller has it.
Read the full description, not just the title or condition label. Confirm the exact platform and model, whether it is new, refurbished, used, or sold as-is, what is included, and whether the seller discloses damage or a known fault. Terms such as “refurbished,” “used,” “as is,” and “close-out” are not a substitute for the seller’s detailed description and terms.

Check that a used console works
Ask for a demonstration
For a used console, ask the seller for a demonstration or a video showing it powering on. Where relevant, ask to see it connect to the internet as well. Powering on is a useful first check, but does not establish that every feature works or that the console can access its online services.
PlayStation-specific checks
PlayStation’s US buying guide recommends checking ports, buttons, image quality, and, on models with one, the disc drive. It also advises watching for overheating and damage, and checking warranty seals and serial numbers. Ask whether the seller has deactivated the console and no longer has access to it.

PlayStation warns that a product reported lost or stolen may be permanently suspended from accessing PlayStation services. This is PlayStation’s guidance for its products, not a universal rule for Xbox, Nintendo, or other systems. The available guidance does not establish equivalent inspection procedures for those platforms.
Separate returns, buyer protection, and warranty
These are different kinds of protection. A marketplace refund policy may help if an eligible transaction goes wrong; it is not a product warranty. A warranty covers the product under the terms of the manufacturer or seller. A return window sets when and how you can send an item back. Check each one for the exact console, condition, seller, and country.

- Marketplace protection: Confirm that the specific item and seller qualify, which checkout and payment methods are eligible, how long you have to make a claim, and what evidence is required. For example, eBay’s published Money Back Guarantee policy says it is not a product warranty and requires eligible checkout and payment on eBay.com. Check the current policy and the listing terms before purchase: eBay Money Back Guarantee policy.
- Returns: Check the return deadline, who pays return shipping, and whether there is a restocking fee or an exclusion for sale items. The FTC notes that sale items can have stricter return terms: FTC advice on what to do when online shopping goes wrong.
- Warranty: Read the warranty terms for the exact model and condition category. PlayStation’s US buying guide says, “Third-party used PlayStation products are not covered by warranty*”; the guide’s asterisk refers to its note that certified refurbished PlayStation products include a warranty. This is PlayStation-specific guidance and should not be applied to other brands, regions, or sellers. The guide recommends buying new PlayStation products from authorized retailers to help ensure functionality, authenticity, return policy, and warranty coverage: PlayStation buying guide (US).
Pay in a way that preserves protection
Use the marketplace’s protected checkout and a safer payment method. The FTC recommends credit cards or an online payment system that offers buyer protection. Do not pay by gift card, wire transfer, or cryptocurrency, and do not move payment off the marketplace: doing so may remove marketplace protections. Keep the receipt, listing details, and seller communications.
Online shopping scams were the second-most reported type of scam to the FTC in 2022, according to the FTC’s 2023 consumer alert. That statistic is a reason to check the transaction carefully, not evidence that a particular listing is fraudulent.

Compare the full cost and terms
When several listings look plausible, compare what you would actually receive and what it would cost to own—not just the headline price.

There is no universal discount threshold that proves a listing is suspicious, and the sources cited here do not establish current console price benchmarks. Judge the price against comparable listings for the same model, configuration, condition, included items, and terms.

Before you pay: a quick checklist
- Have I confirmed the seller’s identity and checked recent feedback and independent complaints?
- Do the photos show the actual console clearly, and does the description disclose its condition, faults, and included accessories?
- For a used unit, have I asked for a demonstration and checked relevant functions and service access?
- Do I understand the separate warranty, return terms, and marketplace-protection rules for this seller and listing?
- Am I paying through the marketplace’s protected checkout, and have I saved the listing and seller messages?
- Have I compared the total delivered cost and terms with genuinely comparable consoles?
