Before buying a discounted Steam strategy game, verify the exact edition, compare its system requirements with your PC, review the live listing’s features and recent player feedback, and confirm the price in your Steam region. Steam’s general refund rule may give you a way out if the game disappoints, but it has limits: requests are generally within 14 days of purchase and under two hours of playtime.
Use this checklist before you buy
- Confirm the exact game and edition. Check whether the selected option is the base game, a bundle, or an edition with particular DLC. Compare what it includes with the other options shown on that game’s live Steam page.
- Compare the requirements with your PC. Read the listed minimum and recommended requirements and supported operating systems. Check them against your own hardware and OS; meeting a minimum specification alone does not guarantee satisfactory performance.
- Read the current listing, not just the sale banner. Look at recent reviews and the feature list for the specific game. Consider whether the strategy mechanics fit your interests and whether online features or requirements match how you intend to play.
- Check your regional price and any restrictions. Review the amount shown in your account’s Steam region and currency, and look for title-specific purchase, activation, or gifting restrictions. Prices can differ by region; Steam’s pricing documentation explains that publishers can use regional price-conversion methods (Steamworks pricing documentation).
- Know the refund conditions. Steam generally accepts refund requests made within 14 days of purchase if the game has been played for less than two hours. The limit includes online, offline, and shared-library playtime. This is the general stated policy, not a guarantee for every product or circumstance; review Steam’s refund guidance and applicable local rights.
How to judge whether the discount is worthwhile
A sale percentage does not tell you whether the offer suits you. Decide based on the version you want, what it includes, whether your PC can run it, and whether its features and recent reviews point to the experience you’re looking for. If you are comparing multiple sale options, check those same details on each game’s individual listing rather than comparing headline discounts alone.
If the price drops after you buy
Steam says it does not refund the difference when a game’s price falls. If you meet the refund criteria, you can request a refund for the original purchase and then buy it again at the current sale price. EU and UK withdrawal rights are a separate issue
Steam describes EU/UK statutory withdrawal rights separately from its general refund policy. Its guidance says that this withdrawal right ends 14 days after purchase or when downloading starts, whichever happens first. This jurisdiction-specific description should not be confused with the general Steam refund criteria; your location and applicable legal rights matter.
