How to Tell Whether a Turn-Based Tactics Game Will Run Well on Your PC

Check the exact game’s minimum and recommended specifications against your PC and desired settings. Requirements are a guide, not a guarantee of frame rate.

There is no single PC specification that guarantees a turn-based tactics game will run well. Check the requirements for the exact game, compare them with your computer’s components, and judge them against the resolution and graphics settings you want. Published requirements are a useful guide, not a promise of a particular frame rate or smoothness.

Start with the exact game’s requirements

Find the current requirements page for the specific game and operating system you plan to use. Prefer the developer or publisher’s page when it is available; Steam’s support pages also reproduce system requirements. Make sure the listing matches the right edition and OS, since requirements are game-specific rather than a standard for the genre.

The range between games can be substantial. For example, The Battle of Polytopia’s Steam listing states 1 GB RAM minimum and 2 GB recommended, while Gears Tactics’ Steam support listing states 8 GB RAM minimum and recommended, as well as DirectX 12. These are requirements for those individual games, not a typical or recommended amount for turn-based tactics games generally.

Compare your PC component by component

Record your computer’s specifications and compare each one with the corresponding game requirement. Listings may not state every detail; leave gaps as unknown rather than filling them with guesses. More RAM cannot compensate for a processor or graphics card below the stated requirement, and there is no supported way to average components into a single score.

ASUS ROG G700 (2025) Gaming Desktop PC, Intel® Core™ Ultra 7 265F Processor, NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 5070, 1TB M.2 NVMe™ PCIe® 4 SSD, 16GB DDR5 RAM, Windows 11 Home, G700TF-DS774
  • Fearless ROG Design – The G700’s dual-glass chassis showcases iconic ROG design with the ROG Slash and Aura Sync RGB lighting. Its 58L capacity supports triple-slot GPUs.
  • Unstoppable Power – Equipped with the Intel Core Ultra 7 265F processor, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 GPU, 16GB DDR5 RAM, and 1TB SSD PCIe 4.0 storage for seamless gaming and multitasking.
  • Optimized Thermals – Stay cool with a quad-fan system, while dust filters and efficient airflow ensure long-term reliability.
  • Advanced Connectivity – Game without lag with 2.5Gbps Ethernet, Wi-Fi 6, and versatile ports. Dolby Atmos audio and AI noise cancellation enhance sound and communication.
  • Ready for Upgrades – Designed with tool-less access, easily swap out components, ensuring future-proof performance for years to come.
  • Processor: Compare the exact CPU model with the listed model or requirement.
  • Graphics: Check the graphics processor model and any stated VRAM requirement. On a laptop or a PC with both integrated and discrete graphics, make sure the game is using the intended adapter; consult current documentation from your PC or graphics-card vendor for device-specific steps.
  • Memory: Compare installed system RAM with the minimum and recommended amounts.
  • Operating system and DirectX: Check the required OS and DirectX version, if specified.
  • Storage: Confirm that the drive has at least the listed free space.

Compare the same fields across minimum and recommended tiers. A shortfall in even one component can indicate a compatibility or performance concern, even if another component exceeds the recommended tier.

Match the requirements to the settings you want

Minimum and recommended specifications are more useful when the listing explains the settings and performance they target. Treat minimum as an entry-level reference and recommended as the better reference for the publisher’s intended experience, while keeping any stated resolution, preset, and frame rate attached to the figures.

For example, Square Enix’s support page gives targets of 60 FPS at 1280×720 on Low for minimum specifications and 60 FPS at 1920×1080 on Highest for recommended specifications. That is a stated target for the game covered by that page; it should not be generalized to other games.

If a requirements page gives only minimum and recommended hardware without a frame-rate target, use it as a rough compatibility guide. It does not establish what FPS your particular PC will achieve. Requirements alone cannot guarantee smoothness at your chosen resolution and preset.

Keep Windows compatibility separate from game performance

A PC’s eligibility to run Windows 11 does not show whether it can run a particular game well. Microsoft’s Windows 11 specifications include OS installation requirements such as a compatible 64-bit processor with at least 2 cores, 4 GB RAM, 64 GB storage, and a DirectX 12-compatible graphics card. Those are Windows requirements, not requirements for any game.

Microsoft describes PC Health Check as a Windows compatibility tool; it does not check the graphics card or display. Passing an OS compatibility check therefore cannot establish game compatibility or performance.

Decide what to do if a specification falls short

Use the comparison to identify a specific mismatch before considering an upgrade. Note which listed component is below minimum, whether the game gives a performance target for your desired settings, and whether the PC is using the intended graphics adapter. If the listing omits a needed detail or your hardware model is unclear, the requirements do not support a confident performance prediction; consult the relevant device vendor’s documentation or seek a game-specific assessment.
