No photograph checklist can prove authenticity on its own: seals vary by publisher, platform, region and production period, and an authentic-looking wrap does not prove that the original contents remain inside.
Use the process below to reduce risk. Stop or seek independent authentication when the variant is unclear, the seam pattern is inconsistent, the box shows opening damage, or the price is high enough that a mistaken purchase would be costly.

1. Identify the exact release before judging the seal
Do not begin with “Does this shrink-wrap look right?” Begin by writing down exactly what the item is supposed to be. Record the platform, region, publisher, edition, release year or production period, catalog or product code, and any known packaging variant. A console library may contain several releases that use different boxes, inserts, labels or sealing methods.
Build a variant record
- Platform: for example, NES, Game Boy or another specific system.
- Region: identify the market shown by the box and cartridge or disc labeling.
- Edition and revision: launch, Player’s Choice-style reissue, budget edition, bundle or other documented release.
- Packaging identifiers: product codes, age ratings, logos, barcode placement, hangtabs, language panels and copyright lines.
- Expected components: note what the release normally included, such as manuals, maps, registration cards or promotional inserts.
PSA’s collecting guidance emphasizes that versions can differ in components and that the variant affects rarity, desirability and value. A seal that is normal for one release can be wrong for another. Compare the seller’s copy with several well-documented examples of the same version, not merely with another game on the same console.

2. Examine the seal’s construction, not just its presence
“Sealed” describes an appearance, not an authentication result. Inspect where the plastic lies, how it overlaps, how it folds at each corner and whether the seams meet in a pattern consistent with known copies.
Common seal descriptions

These categories are examples published by CGC, not a complete identification key for every publisher, region or manufacturing period. Some games were never sealed with plastic wrap. A lack of shrink-wrap therefore does not automatically mean a game was opened, and the presence of shrink-wrap does not automatically mean it is original.
Photograph every seam and corner
Ask for sharp, uncompressed photographs of the top, bottom, left and right edges, all four corners, and both broad faces. Request close-ups where seams cross or fold. Glare can hide a replaced film or a lifted edge, so ask for diffuse lighting and at least one angled view. Compare the tension of the film, the width of folds, excess plastic and any heat-shrink puckering with known copies.

The cardboard often tells you more than the plastic. Concentrate on the opening flaps and the area immediately around them.
Flaps and color breaks
Inspect the flap edges for a thin line where printed color or ink has split. CGC describes a color break along the flaps as strong evidence that the box was opened and used. Look for rubbed fibers, whitening, compressed corners, lifted laminate, disturbed glue, scratches or tiny tears. A box can later be wrapped again, leaving the opening damage underneath an apparently neat seal.

Overall handling and storage condition
- Check every corner for crushing, softened edges or impact dents.
- Look for tears, punctures, creases, fading, smoke or water staining and sticker residue.
- Inspect the front, back, top and bottom for mismatched gloss, discoloration or areas protected from light by a former sticker or wrap.
- Note whether the plastic is scuffed, cloudy, brittle, slack or unusually tight compared with known copies.
Condition is separate from authenticity. A genuinely original seal can be damaged, and a clean-looking reseal can conceal a worn box. Record those judgments independently.
4. Distinguish an original seal from a reseal
A reseal can look convincing because the box has been opened and then wrapped again. Compare all evidence rather than relying on one seam.

Third-party seam pattern
CGC describes a common non-authentic third-party reseal with seams along the top, bottom and one side. That pattern is a warning sign, not an automatic verdict: CGC also cautions that some seals with a similar appearance may be original. Check seam placement, film characteristics, flap condition, printing and variant history together.
Manufacturer and distributor reseals
Manufacturers or distributors sometimes resealed items before retail sale. That possibility is different from a retail reseal of a used or returned game. CGC treats retail reseals of used or returned products as non-authentic for its certification purposes. If a seller says a game was “factory resealed,” ask who performed the work, when and why, and request documentation; the statement is a lead to verify, not proof.
Use comparison as the central test
CGC Video Games states: “One way to authenticate an original seal is to compare the seal to other known copies of your game.” Compare several copies because one photographed listing can contain an unusual but genuine production variation. Differences that deserve an explanation include a seam on an unexpected edge, a different fold direction, excess film gathered at one corner, a newer-looking plastic over an aged box, or a seal that covers a flap differently from every documented example.

5. Confirm that the box, game and packaging belong together
An authentic box and an authentic cartridge or disc can still be mismatched. Verify variant-specific markings before treating the package as a complete example.
Check the box identifiers
- Match the product code and barcode to the claimed region and edition.
- Compare publisher, license, rating and language panels with reference copies.
- Check hangtab construction and die-cut shapes. PSA specifically discusses hangtab boxes as a meaningful variant.
- Look for revision marks, distribution labels or bundle wording that indicate a different release.
Check the physical game when visible
If the cartridge, disc or other contents are visible through an opening or in seller photographs, compare label style, code, color and molding with the box variant. Do not ask a seller to open a genuinely sealed item merely to satisfy curiosity; use documented examples or professional examination instead. An original seal does not prove the contents are original, complete or region-matched.
6. Request a seller evidence package
Before paying, ask for information in writing and save the response with the listing.
- Request full front, back, top, bottom and corner photographs, plus close-ups of every seam and flap.
- Ask for the platform, region, edition, product code and the seller’s basis for identifying the variant.
- Ask whether the box was ever opened, repaired, rewrapped or resealed, and whether any component was replaced.
- Request provenance or purchase history, including where it was acquired and how it was stored.
- Ask whether the seller accepts returns if an independent inspection finds a reseal or mismatch.
- Confirm the exact item pictured will be shipped, including any certification label or case.
A confident answer is not authentication. Treat provenance, storage claims and statements such as “never opened” as evidence to check against the physical item. Use payment and return protections appropriate to the transaction; there is no single marketplace policy that applies everywhere.
7. If the game is graded, verify the certification independently
For a graded item, enter the certification number on the grading company’s official lookup page yourself rather than relying on a seller’s screenshot. Compare the returned description, platform, region, title, variant and stated grades with the actual case and photographs. A certification number is a lookup route, not a substitute for inspecting the item.

Separate the game grade from the seal grade
PSA describes a numerical game grade and a letter seal grade. CGC also publishes separate game and seal grading information. Those scores answer different questions: the box and game may be in excellent condition while the seal has flaws, or a strong seal may cover a box with crushing or fading. Do not reduce the purchase to one number.
Watch for certification exceptions
CGC identifies counterfeit, reseal and questionable-authenticity outcomes among reasons an item may be rejected for certification. A previously encapsulated item can still deserve inspection if the case, label or physical copy does not match the database record. Contact the grading company through its official channel when the lookup is missing, the description is wrong or the label appears altered.
8. Decide whether independent authentication or grading is worth the cost
Professional examination is optional. It becomes more rational when the purchase price is high, the release is scarce, the seal evidence conflicts, or you cannot obtain adequate photographs. It adds cost and waiting time and cannot guarantee a particular grade, resale price or return outcome.

These are service prices, not market values or evidence that grading will increase a game’s sale price. Confirm current fees, eligibility, shipping, insurance, rejection rules and submission terms directly before committing. CGC and PSA describe their own standards; neither set of rules is a universal definition accepted by every collector or marketplace.

9. Compare copies using the same decision criteria
When two listings claim to be the same game, compare them in one worksheet. Do not let a low price hide a weaker seal or a mismatched variant.

There is no dependable universal premium for sealed or graded games. Values vary by title, variant, condition, timing and transaction. Avoid investment or resale-return assumptions unless you have title-specific, dated sales evidence.
10. Red flags that justify walking away or pausing
- The seller cannot identify the platform, region or edition, yet insists the seal is rare.
- Only one blurry front photograph is provided, with no corners, seams or back panel.
- The seam appears on an edge inconsistent with every known copy of that release.
- Flap edges show color breaks, rubbed fibers or crushed cardboard hidden beneath the wrap.
- The plastic looks substantially newer, tighter or glossier than the aged box.
- Product codes, hangtab style, language or ratings point to a different release.
- The certification lookup is absent, mismatched or unavailable while the seller refuses additional photographs.
- The seller will not state whether the box was opened or will not provide workable return terms.
- The price is justified by a claimed sealed-game premium without title-specific, dated evidence.
One red flag may have an innocent explanation; several unresolved inconsistencies should change the decision from “buy” to “pause,” “request professional examination” or “walk away.”
11. A practical pre-purchase workflow
- Define the target: write the exact platform, region, edition, product code and known packaging variant.
- Collect references: find multiple well-documented copies of that same release and note their seam locations, folds and box identifiers.
- Request the complete photo set: obtain all faces, edges, corners, flaps and seam close-ups in clear lighting.
- Inspect the box first: record color breaks, fiber damage, crushing, fading, residue and other opening or handling evidence.
- Inspect the wrap second: compare seam geometry, overlap, tension, folds and corner construction with the references.
- Reconcile the variant: check codes, hangtab, language, ratings and any visible game component for a single coherent release.
- Verify the seller’s account: request purchase history, storage details, prior-opening information and written return terms.
- Check certification: if graded, use the official lookup and match every database detail to the physical item.
- Price the risk: include authentication, grading, shipping, insurance and the cost of a failed return in your decision.
- Choose a stopping point: buy only when the remaining uncertainty is acceptable; otherwise pause, seek independent authentication or decline.
12. What this checklist cannot establish
Visual inspection reduces risk but cannot guarantee that a seal is original, that the contents are untouched, or that the item will receive a particular professional grade. Manufacturing variation, distributor work and unusual regional packaging can produce legitimate exceptions. Conversely, a neat reseal can imitate the expected pattern.

Keep authenticity, condition, completeness, variant identity and transaction protection as separate decisions.
13. Protect the item only after inspection
A box protector or display case can reduce future handling damage, but it does not authenticate a game. If you buy one, select it by the exact dimensions and format of the box, including any hangtab or unusual shape, after you have completed the inspection and documented the item’s condition.
