If you’re buying a Steam Machine specifically to customize its lighting, check this first: Valve’s current support guide says the bottom light bar displays system status and cannot be directly controlled by games or other apps with RGB functionality. It documents no controls for choosing colors, effects, or app-based synchronization. That may change with software updates, so verify the live support information before you buy.
What does the Steam Machine’s light bar do?
Valve describes a light bar along the bottom of the machine that displays system status. Its support guide says: “The light bar is currently only set up to display system status and cannot be directly utilized by games or other apps with RGB functionality.” Read Valve’s Steam Machine feature and troubleshooting guide for the current details.
That distinction matters: a status indicator is not the same as user-customizable RGB lighting. If your must-have feature is selecting colors, creating effects, or syncing the light bar through a game or utility, Valve’s published guidance does not establish that the Steam Machine supports it. The machine also has a separate indicator LED beside the power button; it is not the bottom light bar.
What else should you check before buying?
Set expectations for resolution and performance
Valve says 1080p is the Steam Machine’s default game resolution and the resolution used for Steam Machine Verified testing. The setting can be changed globally or for an individual game, and actual performance depends on the game and its settings. So treat 1080p as the out-of-box target, not a resolution lock or a promise of a particular frame rate. Check guidance for the specific games and display you plan to use.

Valve also describes the Steam Machine as “roughly 6 times more powerful than Steam Deck” in its Steamworks product documentation. That is Valve’s product-level comparison, not an independent benchmark or a guarantee for every game, resolution, or setting.
Match the video outputs to your TV or monitor
Valve lists HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4. Gaming Mode currently supports one display at a time and defaults to HDMI when HDMI is connected; DisplayPort can be used as the sole video output. If you plan to connect DisplayPort to an HDMI display, Valve says you need an active adapter or cable—passive adapters are unsupported. Check the display inputs and the whole connection path, including any receiver, dock, or adapter.

Check USB ports and microSD needs
The support guide lists front USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 ports and rear USB-A 2.0 ports. Consider where you’ll connect accessories such as a controller receiver, keyboard, or external storage.
Valve supports UHS-I class 3 or better microSD cards. UHS-II and UHS-III cards may work, but their higher transfer speeds are unsupported on the machine. If you plan to expand storage this way, choose a card with the supported class in mind rather than assuming a faster card will deliver its advertised higher speeds.

Verify the specific offer in your region
Valve’s limited-drop terms describe a restricted purchase process and its eligibility rules; they do not establish ordinary availability or a current, universally applicable price. Check the live Steam Machine store page for your country and read the terms attached to the offer you see before making plans around stock or cost.
