Before buying an indie game, verify three separate things: the exact device and edition listed, the accessibility features you personally need, and the refund policy of the store that will process payment. A game can run on your console but still be sold through a different storefront, omit a required input option, or become non-refundable as soon as it is downloaded. Treat the game listing, the accessibility documentation, and the seller’s regional policy as three parts of one pre-purchase check.
Start with the game listing, not the genre
“Indie” describes how a game is made or published; it does not describe a universal platform, control scheme, accessibility standard, or refund entitlement. Two independent games released in the same year can have completely different operating-system support, controller requirements, online services, subtitle options, and store rules. Begin with the specific product page for the edition you intend to buy.

Confirm the exact platform and generation
Read the platform label carefully. A listing may distinguish between a PC version, a console generation, a handheld edition, or a cloud-enabled version. “Console” is not precise enough when a title has separate versions for current and previous hardware. On PC, check the supported operating system, processor, memory, graphics hardware, storage requirement, and any launcher or account requirement shown by the developer or store. A game that technically starts may still be unsuitable if it falls below the published graphics or memory requirement.

Check whether the purchase is for the full game, a demo, an early-access build, downloadable content, a bundle, or a preorder. Those labels affect what you receive immediately and can change the applicable refund timing. Early access is still a purchase of a product whose playtime may count toward a store’s limit; it is not a risk-free trial.

Separate the platform from the storefront
A device and a storefront answer different questions. The platform tells you where the software can run; the storefront tells you who accepted the payment and who handles support and refunds. Do not assume that buying a PC key from one seller gives you the same rights as buying the game directly through a platform’s own store. Valve says purchases made outside Steam, including third-party CD keys, cannot be refunded by Valve (Steam Refunds).
Epic makes the same boundary explicit: a purchase made through a third-party console store or another checkout provider is governed by that point of purchase, not by the Epic Games Store policy (Epic Games Store Refund Policy). Before entering payment details, note the store name, the account that will own the license, and the currency or region shown at checkout.
Check the product type and release status
Look for wording such as “preorder,” “early access,” “DLC,” “season pass,” or “bundle.” A preorder can have a refund period that starts on release rather than on the date you paid. Downloadable content can have extra conditions once it has been consumed, modified, or transferred. A bundle can contain products with different eligibility rules. Save the product name, edition, and order date in your receipt so you can identify exactly what you bought.

The game’s own listing should disclose requirements that are not universal to indie games: a persistent internet connection, a separate publisher account, an online-service subscription, a particular controller, a microphone, or a minimum display resolution. If the listing is silent, do not infer that the requirement is absent. Find the developer’s support page or ask the seller before purchase.
Translate accessibility needs into specific features
Accessibility is not a single badge. Decide what would make the game playable for you, then look for those functions in the game’s documentation, store description, manual, or settings guide. Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 121 says, “Information about a game’s accessibility features and settings options should be available for players to review before purchase” (Accessible feature documentation). That principle is useful on every platform: information that appears only after a purchase is too late for a buyer who needs it to decide.
Captions and subtitles
“Subtitles available” may not answer the questions that matter. Check whether subtitles cover spoken dialogue in cinematics and gameplay, identify speakers, distinguish simultaneous speakers, and represent meaningful non-speech sounds such as alarms, footsteps, or off-screen cues. Look for adjustable text size, background opacity, contrast, and safe placement that does not hide important game information. If you rely on captions, verify whether they can be enabled from the first launch or only after an opening sequence.

Some games provide dialogue text but omit environmental audio cues. Microsoft’s guidance notes that missing subtitle or visual-audio-cue support can make a title unplayable for some players. Treat a generic “captions” label as a starting point, not proof that every important sound is represented.

Check for separate sliders for dialogue, effects, music, and voice chat; mono output or left-right balance; visual indicators for important sounds; color-blind options; screen-shake reduction; flash or strobe reduction; adjustable field of view; and high-contrast or enlarged interface text. A game may offer one of these settings while omitting another. Read the exact list rather than assuming that a broad label such as “visual accessibility” covers the feature you need.
For low-vision or reading needs, look for scalable menu text, subtitle sizing, contrast controls, narration, screen-reader support, and the ability to pause or slow a cinematic. Confirm whether text scaling applies to gameplay prompts as well as menus. If a developer publishes screenshots of settings, use them to verify labels and ranges, but remember that a screenshot does not establish how every mode behaves during play.
Input, controller, and motor options
Review whether the game supports keyboard and mouse, a standard controller, adaptive controllers, remapping, multiple simultaneous inputs, and one-stick or simplified-input modes. Useful details include toggle-versus-hold choices, adjustable hold duration, repeat-delay controls, aim or cursor sensitivity, dead-zone settings, vibration controls, and the ability to disable rapid button presses. A remapping menu that changes only a few actions may not solve a particular motor-access need.
Check whether a setting applies globally or only to one control mode. Some games allow remapping on a controller but not on keyboard, or permit button changes while leaving analog-stick functions fixed. If you need a particular accessory, confirm that the game and the operating system recognize it before relying on a store’s generic controller-support icon.

Look for selectable difficulty, damage or timing adjustments, aim assistance, invincibility or assist modes, puzzle hints, checkpoint frequency, and options to skip or replay difficult sections. “Easy” does not necessarily remove a timing requirement, and a game with no conventional difficulty menu may still include individual assists. Conversely, a title can offer several difficulty labels without addressing a specific sensory or motor barrier.

Find out when settings become available. If an option is required for the opening cinematic, tutorial, or first combat sequence, a menu that appears only after that section may not be sufficient. Developer documentation, a manual, or a pre-release accessibility page is the best place to confirm this detail.
Use accessibility tags as discovery tools, not guarantees
Store tags can help you find relevant games, but they are not a substitute for reading the feature description. Microsoft’s Accessibility Feature Tags define criteria for individual features and identify version 2.0.1 as published on 14 March 2025 (Accessibility Feature Tags). A tag indicates that a listed criterion was met; it does not tell you whether the implementation matches your preferred text size, timing, contrast, or control arrangement.
Supported PlayStation 5 Store listings can show tags covering visual and audio settings, controller options, difficulty, and online communication (Accessibility features on PS5 and PS4). Use those tags to narrow a search, then open the game’s full listing and developer documentation. If a tag is missing, that does not prove the feature is absent; if it is present, verify the exact behavior and scope.
Refund rules depend on the seller, product, and region
There is no single “indie game refund” rule. The store that processed the payment, the product category, the date of purchase or release, whether you downloaded or played the content, and local consumer law can all matter. The following comparison reflects the linked policies and their stated scope; check the regional policy again at checkout because terms can change.

Steam: protect the 14-day and two-hour limits
Steam’s ordinary rule is a request within 14 days of purchase and less than two hours of playtime. For a title bought before release that could not be played, the 14-day period starts on the release date. If you enter early access, that time counts toward the two-hour limit. This makes a long “test” before deciding risky, even when the game is still labelled unfinished.
Downloadable content is treated separately. Eligibility can depend on whether the DLC has been consumed, modified, or transferred, and some products are excluded. A third-party key is outside Steam’s refund system, so contact the seller that issued the key instead. Keep the transaction receipt and submit the request through Steam’s support flow while the relevant window is open.

Epic Games Store: check the eligibility label
For PC and Mac, Epic generally covers products marked “refundable” or “self-refundable” when the request is made within 14 days and the runtime is below two hours. The label on the product page is therefore part of the purchase decision. Do not transfer this rule to mobile purchases or to a code redeemed through another provider; those transactions can have different terms.
Epic’s policy also acknowledges statutory rights. If you are in a jurisdiction with mandatory withdrawal, conformity, or faulty-content protections, those rights may supplement the store’s voluntary policy. Follow the regional policy and the instructions attached to your order rather than assuming that the two-hour rule is the complete legal position.
PlayStation Store in the United States: do not download first
The US PlayStation Store support policy generally requires a request within 14 days for a game or DLC and says the content must not have been downloaded or streamed. That is a materially different test from a playtime threshold: downloading to inspect the title can remove ordinary eligibility even if you never launch it. Faulty content and local law may provide additional rights.
Preorders, subscriptions, and consumables are separate categories with their own timing and usage conditions. Because the linked page is the US policy, use the PlayStation support page for your country before relying on these terms.
A practical pre-purchase workflow
- Write down your target setup. Record the exact device and generation, operating system, controller or input method, account requirements you can meet, and any online-service subscription you already have. This prevents a vague “it runs on console” assumption.
- Open the exact product listing. Confirm the edition, platform, release status, language, storage requirement, and whether the page is for the full game, a demo, DLC, bundle, early access, or preorder.
- Identify the payment boundary. Note the store or code seller shown at checkout. If a different company processes payment or supplies a key, save that company’s refund page and support route.
- Make an accessibility checklist. Mark the features you require: captions and speaker labels, visual sound cues, text size and contrast, narration, remapping, toggle controls, simplified input, difficulty assists, or reduced flashing and camera motion.
- Verify each required feature. Read the game’s settings list or developer documentation. Treat tags as pointers. If a required feature is not documented, ask the developer or seller before paying rather than guessing from the genre or platform.
- Read the applicable refund policy. Match the policy to the seller, region, and product type. Note the request deadline, download or streaming restriction, playtime limit, preorder rule, and any “refundable” marking.
- Save evidence. Keep the receipt, order number, edition name, and a copy or link to the listing and policy you relied on. Store pages and terms can change after purchase.
- Test conservatively. If your store uses a playtime threshold, avoid leaving the game running while paused or in menus. If the policy bars downloaded content, do not download merely to inspect settings; seek documentation first.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming a platform purchase transfers everywhere
A license is normally tied to the account and storefront that sold it. A PC purchase does not automatically grant a console copy, and a console purchase through one store does not necessarily appear in another store’s library. Confirm cross-buy or cross-save claims on the exact listing; do not infer them from the game’s name or publisher.

A turn-based game may still require rapid menu navigation, and a pixel-art game may still use small, low-contrast text. Conversely, an action game may include extensive assists. Judge the documented controls, visual presentation, audio cues, and pacing of the individual title.

Waiting until after download to investigate
Downloading can be the critical event under the US PlayStation policy, while playing can consume the time allowance under Steam and Epic rules. Use manuals, developer videos, screenshots of settings, and support answers before checkout whenever a feature is essential.
Testing beyond a store’s threshold
Starting a game to check whether it launches is different from completing chapters or leaving it running for hours. Track playtime when a two-hour condition applies, and remember that Steam counts early-access playtime. A refund policy is not a replacement for an accessibility review.
Ignoring regional differences
Terms shown in one country may not apply in another. The PlayStation page linked above is specifically for the United States. Epic identifies statutory rights that can apply in some jurisdictions, and every store may publish separate pages by region. Select your country on the seller’s support site and read the product-specific section before payment.
What to do when information is missing
Missing information is a decision signal. If the listing names “controller support” but does not say whether controls are remappable, ask for that detail. If captions are advertised but speaker identification and non-speech sounds are not described, ask whether those elements are included. If the store does not display a refund category or eligibility label, open its policy and support page before buying.
When contacting a developer, describe the exact barrier and the platform: for example, whether you need subtitle enlargement on a particular console, a toggle instead of a hold, or a one-stick control mode on PC. A precise question is more likely to produce a useful answer than a general request for “accessibility.” Save the reply with your purchase records, but treat a promise of a future update as different from a feature available in the version you are buying.
How to decide when the checks disagree
The game runs, but a required feature is undocumented
Do not substitute a platform-level accessibility feature for a game-level implementation. An operating system may offer magnification, remapping, or narration, yet the game can block that function in menus, omit spoken text, or require an unremappable sequence. Buy only when the developer or seller confirms that the specific need is met, or when you are comfortable treating the purchase as non-refundable under the applicable policy.
The accessibility fit is good, but the refund policy is restrictive
Use the available documentation to reduce uncertainty before downloading or playing. For a policy based on a no-download condition, finish your research first. For a playtime-based policy, plan a short, deliberate launch test and stop before the threshold if the game does not meet your needs.

The refund window is generous, but the platform is wrong
A refund does not solve an incompatible edition if the store’s conditions are not met. Recheck the platform and generation before payment; the cheapest or most flexible policy is irrelevant if the license cannot run on your intended device.
Final decision checklist
- The listing names your exact platform, generation, operating system, and edition.
- You know whether you are buying the full game, DLC, a bundle, early access, or a preorder.
- The checkout page identifies the seller and payment provider that will handle support.
- Every accessibility feature you require is documented for that game, not merely suggested by a tag or genre.
- You have checked caption detail, audio and visual controls, input remapping, controller support, difficulty or assist options, and when those settings become available.
- You have read the refund policy for the seller, region, and product type, including download, streaming, runtime, preorder, and DLC conditions.
- You have saved the receipt, product details, and relevant policy link.
If any required answer remains unknown, pause the purchase. A few minutes spent confirming the listing and seller can prevent an unplayable license and a refund request made under the wrong rules.
