Then compare the total cost for the amount of time and the specific content you expect to play—not just the price shown on the store page.
Start with four checks
- Access: Is the game free to start, a one-time purchase, subscription-based, or a mix? Find out whether payment is needed after any trial or included play period.
- Content: Does the edition include the expansions or other content you want, or will you need to buy them separately?
- Extra spending: Which purchases are optional, and what do they provide? Check whether any are tied to access or game time.
- Exit terms: Check automatic renewal, cancellation timing, refunds, and which seller’s policy applies.
These details vary by game, edition, region, platform, and purchase route. There is no single MMO payment model.
Work out the cost for your play pattern
Compare equivalent access over the period you expect to play. Add the initial game or edition cost, any recurring subscription or game time, expansions needed for your intended content, and optional purchases you actually plan to make. If you play intermittently, estimate the cost for those periods rather than assuming a full year of play.
Do not compare one game’s base edition with another game’s complete access. Check what each price buys and whether a subscription includes content that another game sells separately. Treat store prices and subscription rates as current only after checking the live page for your region; fees, taxes, and offers can change.

Check exactly what the edition includes
Edition names such as “Complete” are not enough on their own. Read the listing for the exact expansion and content entitlements, plus any digital items. ArenaNet says Guild Wars 2 editions and expansions offer different included benefits and items; some included items are granted only once. How the payment model can differ
Guild Wars 2: free access with one-time expansion upgrades
ArenaNet says Guild Wars 2 can be played for free after signing up, and expansions can be purchased as one-time upgrades. Its support page says the game “will never require a monthly subscription or any other fees to play.” That statement concerns required play access; it does not mean there are no optional purchases. FINAL FANTASY XIV: included play period, then subscription
Square Enix’s EU product page says Starter Edition and Complete Edition purchases include 30 days of play, after which continued play requires a subscription. The page lists EU membership tiers and warns that fees may change, so use it for the current terms in that region rather than treating its prices as universal. It also states: “A Game Time Card/Game Time Code cannot be used on the Entry membership tier.” Check membership compatibility before purchasing a card or code. FINAL FANTASY XIV EU product page
These examples illustrate why a game’s own current product and support pages matter: free access, one-time expansions, included play time, and recurring membership can coexist in different combinations.

Separate optional purchases from access costs
Inspect what an in-game purchase provides rather than assuming it is either required or purely cosmetic. Check the official store description and the game’s current terms for whether a purchase grants convenience, appearance items, content, or game time.
Blizzard’s March 2, 2015 announcement described the World of Warcraft Token as purchasable with real money in the in-game shop or from other players for in-game gold, and usable for game time; the announcement also said token transactions were final. Read cancellation and refund terms for the seller you use
Subscription cancellation and refunds are separate questions. FINAL FANTASY XIV’s North American support terms say cancellation can be made at any time, but takes effect at the end of the paid subscription term and unused days are not refunded. Refund eligibility can also depend on what you bought and where you bought it. EA’s help page gives conditional rules for refunds, including limits involving DLC and third-party games, and conditions for digital subscription cancellation. Its EU withdrawal language also depends on timing and whether the game has been launched. Check the current policy that applies to the exact product and seller; do not assume a publisher’s direct-store terms apply to a console, PC storefront, or retailer purchase.
