Before buying an Xbox Series X or Series S, check two things first: whether you need a disc drive for games you own, and whether your important older titles are supported. Then compare the exact console configuration, display target, internal storage, and expansion options. Series S is all-digital; a disc-drive Series X is the option to consider if you want to play physical discs.
Start with the games you already own
Make a short list of the games you most want to play, then note whether each is digital or on disc. Xbox Series X|S supports select Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox games—not every title from those generations. Look up each important game in Xbox’s backward-compatible games catalog before you buy. Features can vary by game, and a download is required.
- Digital games: Eligible owned titles appear in the console’s “Ready to Install” section.
- Supported discs: On a disc-drive Series X, insert the disc to download the game. The disc must remain inserted to play.
- Series S: It has no disc drive, so you cannot use physical game discs directly. If your collection is on disc, check a disc-drive Series X configuration instead.
Original Xbox games have additional limits: legacy Xbox Live services such as online multiplayer and in-game marketplaces are unavailable through backward compatibility. Supported offline multiplayer may still work, but original Xbox games do not gain Xbox achievements, and original Xbox saves do not transfer to Series X|S.
Compare the exact console configurations
“Series X” and “Series S” each cover multiple configurations. Xbox’s comparison page currently shows the options below; configurations and availability can vary by market, and this list is not a guarantee that every option is locally in stock. Check the exact SKU at the retailer before ordering.

Disc access and resolution
Xbox describes Series X as native 4K and Series S as designed for 1440p with the ability to upscale to 4K. Treat these as manufacturer descriptions, not a guarantee that every game will render at that resolution. Game support and your display matter. Xbox also advertises up to 120 FPS for supported content on a compatible display; that is a possible maximum, not a result every game or screen will deliver.

Series X configurations are not all alike: check whether the specific model has a UHD Blu-ray Disc player if you want to play discs. A digital-only Series X still cannot directly use a physical game disc. Series S is disc-free across its configurations.
Choose storage for how you play
Compare the internal SSD capacity on the exact SKU, not just the console family name. If you expect to keep many games installed, decide whether you want more internal capacity up front or plan to add storage. Xbox supports two distinct expansion paths, and they do not have the same stated performance.

| Storage option | What it is for | What Xbox says about performance |
|---|---|---|
| Internal SSD | Built-in game storage; capacity varies by configuration. | Console’s internal storage. |
| Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card | Extra game storage through the dedicated expansion port; can be selected as an install destination. | Xbox describes it as matching the internal SSD experience/performance. |
| USB 3.1 external HDD | Supported external storage. Check the game’s requirements before assuming a particular title can run from it. | Not described as matching the expansion card’s internal-SSD performance. |
Xbox’s comparison page describes the dedicated expansion-card port and matching performance; its Series S specifications list USB 3.1 external HDD support. An October 2021 Xbox Wire announcement says the card plugs into the rear port, supports choosing it as an install destination, and matches internal SSD performance. It also says Quick Resume works with internal storage, an expansion card, or USB external storage. That announcement is historical; use current listings to check which card capacities and models are available now rather than relying on its old pricing or launch availability.

On August 26, 2026, Xbox Wire announced a feature for claiming a digital entitlement for supported disc games. Xbox says most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support it, and that the feature began with thousands of eligible titles. This is a selective title list, not a conversion guarantee for every disc.

To claim an eligible title, the announcement describes inserting and launching its supported disc on an Xbox One or Series X console. The physical disc continues to work. Xbox’s announcement does not identify Series S as a claiming device, and this feature does not make a Series S able to play discs. Check Xbox’s instructions and eligible-title information before making the feature part of your buying decision. Xbox also notes Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming where supported.
Quick Recap
Best Value
Use this checklist before checkout
- Write down your must-play games and check each title in Xbox’s backward-compatibility catalog.
- Mark which games are digital and which are physical discs; choose a Series X with a disc drive if direct disc play matters.
- Confirm the exact configuration, color, drive type, and SSD capacity in the retailer’s listing.
- Match the console to your display and target games; do not treat 4K or 120 FPS as guaranteed in every title.
- Decide whether internal capacity is enough, or whether you want a dedicated expansion card or supported USB storage.
- Compare local price, stock, and return terms for the exact SKU; Xbox notes that configuration options and pricing vary by market.
