What to Check Before Buying or Downloading an MMO on Steam

Use the game’s own Steam listing to check compatibility, online access, accounts, costs, reviews, and development status before you commit.

Before you buy or download an MMO on Steam, check the game’s own system requirements, online and account requirements, full cost model, recent reviews, and development status. Those details vary by title, and a free download or a PC that can install the files does not guarantee that you can play without extra accounts, recurring costs, or a persistent internet connection.

1. Check whether your PC meets this game’s requirements

Open the exact game’s Steam store page and compare its minimum and recommended requirements with the computer you plan to use. Check the operating system, processor, memory, graphics card, DirectX version, network requirement, and available storage. Minimum requirements are a baseline; recommended requirements indicate what the publisher considers a better fit.

Use the listing for that specific game, not another MMO’s figures. For example, the current Throne and Liberty Steam listing specifies 63 GB of available storage for both minimum and recommended configurations, requires persistent internet, and warns that its requirements may change. The Lord of the Rings Online has different requirements. These are title-specific examples, not estimates for MMO storage or hardware generally.

Leave some free disk space beyond the stated requirement if you can. Updates can add or change files, so the store’s available-space figure is a starting point rather than a promise that future patches will never need more room.

2. Confirm how the game handles internet access and accounts

Look for wording such as “persistent internet connection required,” and check whether the game requires a separate publisher account, third-party software, or acceptance of additional terms. A Steam download alone does not tell you whether the game supports offline play or whether its servers will be available whenever you want to play.

Valve’s Steam Subscriber Agreement says Steam content is licensed rather than sold, that using Steam requires a Steam account, and that a game may require the Steam client and an internet connection. It also notes that content may update automatically and system requirements can change. Check the individual game’s listing and linked terms for its actual access conditions.

Some listings disclose separate requirements. Throne and Liberty, for example, identifies third-party terms and anti-cheat software on its store page. The Lord of the Rings Online listing says that a separate Standing Stone Games account is required. If you do not want to create another account or install additional software, check for these disclosures before starting the download.

3. Work out what the game may cost over time

“Free to play” describes the cost of getting started, not necessarily every optional purchase or paid benefit. Check the listing and game terms for in-game purchases, subscriptions, expansions, character slots, or other paid options. If a subscription is involved, find out what it pays for and what happens to access or progression when it ends.

Steam says free-to-play games can be downloaded without a subscription or credit card, and that players do not have to buy from the Steam Store to play and progress. Some Steam community features are restricted for limited accounts, while support for in-game issues is handled by the game’s own support team. The game’s purchase terms and support arrangements matter as much as its free-to-play label.

The Lord of the Rings Online listing illustrates how details can coexist: it describes free online play with no monthly fees, displays in-game purchases, and requires a separate account. That is one game’s arrangement, not a rule for other MMOs. Check current terms on the title’s own page before deciding what you are willing to spend.

4. Read reviews for current service conditions

Steam shows recent and lifetime review scores separately. In Steamworks documentation, Valve defines the recent score as covering the past 30 days and the lifetime score as reflecting the product’s history. Only reviews from Steam purchases count toward the score, although other reviews may still appear. Reviews written during Early Access remain marked after full release unless their authors update them.

Use the scores to decide what to read, not as a guarantee of your own experience. Look for recent, repeated comments about the issues you care about, such as server stability, queues, bugs, customer support, account linking, or monetization. Check the dates and context: a launch-period complaint may no longer describe the game, while a current review may be about a temporary outage rather than an ongoing problem. Steam says prominent reviews are selected from recent, helpful reviews, but no score can guarantee server health when you log in.

  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.

5. Treat Early Access as the game you are buying today

Steam describes Early Access as a way to play a work in progress while it is being developed. Judge the version available now rather than buying solely on the promise of what the finished game might become. Look at current screenshots and trailers, and read the developer’s Early Access plan to see what it says about the game’s intended direction.

Steam says a store page will show an inactivity notice when an Early Access title has had no developer update and no “update” event for more than 12 months. Treat that as a reason to examine the game’s update history and current state more closely; the notice alone does not prove that development has stopped.

6. Understand Steam’s refund guidance before you try the game

Steam generally says it will refund a title if you request the refund within 14 days of purchase and have played for less than two hours. Online, offline, and shared-library playtime count toward that limit. Steam says you can still submit a request outside those conditions for review, but an exception is not guaranteed. The general guidance is not jurisdiction-specific legal advice; Steam also provides a separate page covering statutory withdrawal rights in the EU and UK.

Use the refund window as a limited safety net, not a replacement for checking requirements, account terms, costs, and recent player feedback first.
