If you want to play major story-led Star Wars games in in-universe order, start with Knights of the Old Republic, then follow Cal Kestis’s story in Jedi: Fallen Order and Jedi: Survivor, before moving to the Galactic Civil War-era campaigns in Squadrons and Battlefront II. This is a curated timeline, not a complete chronology of every Star Wars game; the placements below use the official era descriptions and story details available for each title.
What order should I play the Star Wars games in?
For a story-focused playthrough, use this broad in-universe sequence. It is different from release order: these games were published at different times, and the story placement—not their launch dates—determines where they fit here.
- Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic — the ancient Old Republic, roughly 4,000 years before the Galactic Empire.
- Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order — the Reign of the Empire, after Order 66.
- Star Wars Jedi: Survivor — five years after Fallen Order.
- Star Wars: Squadrons — near the end of the Galactic Civil War.
- Star Wars: Battlefront II (2017) — a campaign arc that begins around the destruction of the second Death Star and spans the period toward The Force Awakens.
The order gives you a useful path through distinct eras, but it is not a precise year-by-year ranking: some official descriptions establish only a broad era, and Battlefront II covers decades rather than one point in time.
1. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Knights of the Old Republic (often shortened to KOTOR) is set about 4,000 years before the Galactic Empire, in a period when hundreds of Jedi have fallen in battle against the Sith, according to the official StarWars.com game page. Its role-playing story lets players shape their character’s path, including choices associated with the light or dark side.
#1 Best Overall
- The following games are included in the cartridge: STAR WARS Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy (3.6 GB)
- STAR WARS Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast (1.1 GB)
- STAR WARS Episode I Racer (254 MB)
- STAR WARS Republic Commando (2.5 GB)
- STAR WARS: The Force Unleashed (3.4 GB)
This makes KOTOR the earliest entry in this selected timeline. Its Old Republic setting is far removed from the later imperial-era stories, but the available official placement does not establish its exact order against every other Old Republic game. Treat it as an ancient-era starting point, not as a claim that it sits in a fully mapped sequence with all related titles.
2. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
Fallen Order takes place during the Reign of the Empire, after Order 66. Cal Kestis is a Padawan who survived the Jedi purge and is pursued by Imperial Inquisitors. StarWars.com describes the game as an original action-adventure story; its official page is the source for the game and its premise.

It is the first part of a connected single-player story about Cal. If you plan to play both Cal Kestis games, begin here rather than jumping directly to Survivor.
3. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor
Survivor continues Cal’s story in the Reign of the Empire era. Its official page says the game picks up five years after Fallen Order, making the sequence between the two unambiguous: play Fallen Order first, then Survivor. See the official StarWars.com page.

4. Star Wars: Squadrons
Squadrons belongs near the end of the Galactic Civil War, within the Age of the Rebellion. Its official description gives a broad placement rather than a precise in-universe year. The game has a self-contained single-player campaign focused on starfighter combat, as well as multiplayer dogfights; its official page supports the era and format.
That puts it well after Cal Kestis’s imperial-era adventures in this timeline. It is a separate campaign, not another chapter in the Jedi games’ story.

5. Star Wars: Battlefront II (2017)
Place the single-player campaign as a long arc, not as a single event. Official StarWars.com coverage says the story spans thirty years and centers on an Imperial squad active around the destruction of the second Death Star, extending across the broader period from Return of the Jedi toward The Force Awakens. The campaign’s span and framing are described in StarWars.com’s November 17, 2017 coverage.
The game also offers multiplayer battles across three eras. Those maps and matchups are not the same thing as the single-player campaign’s narrative order, so use the campaign—not the multiplayer era selection—when following this timeline. The official game page covers the title’s broader format.

How to use this timeline
- Want a connected character story? Play Fallen Order before Survivor; the latter continues the same protagonist’s story five years later.
- Want a stand-alone era excursion? KOTOR offers an ancient Old Republic role-playing story, while Squadrons is a self-contained starfighter campaign near the end of the Galactic Civil War.
- Want a story that crosses eras? Follow the Battlefront II single-player campaign as a multi-decade narrative, and distinguish it from the game’s multiplayer battles.
StarWars.com’s era framework and game pages support these broad placements, but they do not amount to a comprehensive chronology for every game or pin every campaign to an exact year. For a wider reference that includes games, StarWars.com describes the book Star Wars: Timelines as a chronological guide to the larger story.
Announced, not part of the playable timeline yet: Fate of the Old Republic
Lucasfilm Games announced Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic in December 2025 as an all-new story set at the end of the Old Republic. The announcement establishes its setting, but does not establish a release date or current availability. Keep it separate from the playable sequence above rather than treating it as a game readers can already add to their playthrough.
