Sony documents that PS4 consoles do not support PS2, PS3 or PSone game discs, while PS5 consoles do not support PS3 discs and cannot play PS2-format software from disc. If your target game is actually a PS4 disc, compatibility is a different question: a PS5 must have a disc drive, and you still need to verify the exact title.
Before paying, identify the game format printed on the case and disc, identify the exact console model you will use, and check Sony’s current title-specific compatibility or upgrade information. The PlayStation logo alone is not enough.

Start with the disc generation, not the logo
PlayStation packaging can look similar across generations, and a seller may describe an item simply as a “PlayStation game.” That description does not establish compatibility. Read the platform name on both the case and the disc: it should say PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3 or PlayStation 4. A PS2 or PS3 label is decisive when the intended console is a PS4 or PS5: the disc is not a supported game format on either newer generation.

A PS4 and a PS5 have different compatibility rules, and a PS5 with a disc drive is materially different from a PS5 Digital Edition. Write down the exact console before you compare listings.

“Most PS4 games” is not a guarantee for every PS4 release. Sony maintains an exceptions list, and the status of an individual game or upgrade offer can change. That statement also says nothing about PS2 or PS3 discs.
What PS4 owners can and cannot use
PS2 and PS3 discs
Sony’s Europe edition of the PS4 FAQ, published October 30, 2013, answers the backward-compatibility question directly: the PS4 system does not feature backward compatibility for PS3, PS2 or PSone games. A PS2 or PS3 disc therefore cannot be inserted into a PS4 as a normal game purchase. Cleaning the disc, changing the console’s region or using a generic adapter does not change its format.
Used PS4 discs
There is a separate used-disc rule. The same Sony FAQ says the PS4 does not restrict players from playing disc-based used games. In practical terms, a used PS4 disc can be a normal PS4 purchase if it is genuine, readable and compatible with your console. That policy does not extend backward to PS2 or PS3 discs; “used” describes ownership history, not the disc generation.
What PS5 owners need to verify
PS2 and PS3 discs remain unsupported
Sony’s current PS5 backward-compatibility guidance states that PS5 consoles do not support PlayStation 3 discs. Sony’s PS5 safety guidance also says PS2- and PS3-format software cannot be played from disc. A PS5’s newer hardware and ability to run many PS4 games should not be interpreted as general support for older physical formats.

PS5 Digital Edition cannot read a PS4 disc
A PS4 disc is usable on PS5 only when the target PS5 has a disc drive. The PS5 Digital Edition has no optical drive, so it cannot install or verify a physical PS4 game. Buying an inexpensive PS4 disc for a Digital Edition leaves you with no supported way to launch that copy.
The disc must stay inserted
For a compatible physical PS4 game on a disc-drive PS5, the disc remains the ownership check. Installing the game to the console does not turn the physical copy into a permanently disc-free license. Plan to keep the disc available whenever you play.
Check the individual PS4 title
Sony describes PS5 support as covering the overwhelming majority of PS4 games, while identifying exceptions and titles marked “PS4 only.” Search the exact game name, edition and region in Sony’s current compatibility guidance or the PlayStation Store listing before you purchase. A similarly named sequel, remaster or bundled edition can have different support information.

Why a PS3-to-PS4 upgrade is not ordinary backward compatibility
Some publishers offered a way to obtain a PS4 digital version after buying a qualifying PS3 game. These promotions are title-specific, can have region or account conditions, and may have ended. They do not make the PS3 disc itself playable on a PS4 or PS5.

There is an additional PS5 limitation. Sony’s PS5 guidance says that when an upgraded PS4 digital game still requires the original PS3 disc to launch, that disc-dependent upgraded game cannot be played on PS5. An apparent bargain listing can therefore fail in two ways: the PS3 disc may not run directly, and its associated upgrade entitlement may not transfer to the PS5 scenario you intend to use.
Before treating an upgrade as a possible route, confirm all of the following on the specific title’s instructions:
- Whether the offer exists for that game and your country or region.
- Whether the offer is still available or was time-limited.
- Whether the PS4 version is digital or physical.
- Whether the PS3 disc is required every time the upgraded game starts.
- Whether the PS5 model and your account meet the stated requirements.
Seven checks to complete before paying a seller
- Identify the target console. Record “PS4,” “PS5 disc edition” or “PS5 Digital Edition.” Do not proceed with only the phrase “new PlayStation.”
- Read the platform marking. Ask for a clear photograph of the disc’s printed label and the case spine or front. Confirm that it says PS2, PS3 or PS4, rather than relying on the PlayStation logo or a seller’s title.
- Reject PS2 and PS3 discs for PS4 or PS5 play. Sony’s documented generation rules make this a stop decision, not a condition to negotiate around.
- If it is a PS4 disc for PS5, verify the drive. Confirm that the console is a disc-drive model. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot use the disc.
- Search the exact PS4 title. Use Sony’s current backward-compatibility information or the PlayStation Store listing. Check the precise release, not just the franchise name, and look for a “PS4 only” designation or other exception.
- Check the disc condition. Ask whether the disc is complete and readable, and request photographs of the data side under good light. Scratches can make an otherwise compatible disc fail, but a perfect PS3 disc is still not a PS4 or PS5 disc.
- Keep the listing and messages. Save the seller’s platform description and photographs until the game has installed and launched. If the item arrives mislabeled, this evidence supports a return request.
How to read a used listing without being misled
Words that require clarification
- “PlayStation game”: asks you to identify the generation yourself.
- “Works on newer systems”: is not a substitute for a title-specific Sony compatibility entry.
- “Remastered” or “HD”: may describe a separate PS4 release, not the original PS2 or PS3 disc. Request the exact platform printed on the item.
- “Digital upgrade included”: requires the original promotion’s rules, account, region and launch conditions. It is not proof that the disc runs directly.
- “Disc only”: means you may lack a case, manual or code; it does not identify the generation.
Questions to send the seller
Use a short, specific message: “Please confirm the platform printed on the disc (PS2, PS3 or PS4), the exact game and edition, whether every disc shown is included, and whether you have personally verified that this physical disc reads.” For a PS4 disc intended for PS5, add: “Is this the PS4 version, and do you know whether Sony lists this title as playable on PS5?” The seller’s answer cannot replace Sony’s listing, but it can expose a mismatched photograph or vague description before payment.
If you are buying an older PS3 to play PS2 games
This is a different compatibility question from playing PS2 discs on a PS4 or PS5. Some early PS3 hardware had limited PlayStation 2 compatibility, while later models did not. You must identify the exact PS3 model number rather than assume that every PS3 behaves alike.

The cited Sony manual for the CECH-2101A/CECH-2101B model group, software version 3.10, states that the model does not play PS2-format software and has limited compatibility with older PlayStation formats. That manual is evidence about that model group; it cannot establish a rule for every PS3 revision. If a listing omits the CECH number, ask for a photograph of the console label or system-information screen before treating it as a PS2-capable machine.
Even after confirming a PS3 model, verify the individual PS2 game. Regional releases, accessories and unusual peripherals can introduce separate requirements. Do not pay a premium based solely on a seller’s claim that a console is an “early model.”

Trap: “It is Sony hardware, so older discs should work”
Backward compatibility is a generation- and format-specific feature, not a universal PlayStation property. Check the table above and the exact Sony guidance for the console you own.
Trap: “The PS5 runs PS4 games, so it runs PS3 games too”
PS5 support for most PS4 titles does not include PS3 discs. If the listing is PS3 format, stop unless your plan is to use a separately verified PS3 console.

Trap: “The PS5 Digital Edition is cheaper, and I can add discs later”
A PS5 Digital Edition cannot read physical PS4 games. Do not buy a disc library for that model. Decide on digital purchases or a disc-drive console before shopping for physical copies.
Trap: “An upgrade code makes the old disc compatible”
An upgrade is an offer with its own terms, not a hardware conversion. Confirm whether the upgraded PS4 game requires the PS3 disc; Sony says that disc-dependent arrangement does not work on PS5.
Trap: “The seller tested it in a newer PlayStation”
Ask which model and which disc format were tested. A disc can work in a PS3 but not a PS4, or work in a PS4 but not a PS5 Digital Edition. “Tested” is incomplete without the console model.
What to do when a purchase fails
The console says the disc is unsupported
First reread the platform marking. If the disc is PS2 or PS3 and the console is PS4 or PS5, the message reflects the documented compatibility boundary; cleaning or reinstalling will not make that generation playable. Contact the seller for a return based on an incorrect listing.
A PS4 disc will not launch on PS5
- Confirm that the PS5 has a disc drive and that the disc is inserted label-side as directed by the console.
- Check the exact title in Sony’s current PS5 compatibility information for a PS4-only exception.
- Install available PS5 system-software updates and try the disc again.
- If the title was obtained through a PS3-to-PS4 upgrade, read the upgrade terms. A PS3-disc requirement is not supported for the PS5 use case described by Sony.
- If the physical disc is damaged or does not match the listing, document the condition and request a return.
The listing promised a digital upgrade
Keep the receipt, photographs and the seller’s wording. Verify the game’s upgrade page, account region and eligibility before redeeming anything. Do not assume a code, a PS3 disc and a PS5 automatically combine into a supported license.
A practical decision tree
- Is the disc labeled PS2 or PS3? If yes, do not buy it for play on PS4 or PS5. Consider only a separately verified older console.
- Is it labeled PS4? If no, stop and identify the format before paying.
- Will it be used on PS5? If no, apply the PS4 rules. If yes, continue.
- Does the PS5 have a disc drive? If no, reject the physical-disc purchase. If yes, continue.
- Does Sony list this exact PS4 title as playable on PS5? If the title is marked PS4-only or absent from the applicable guidance, do not assume support.
- Is the purchase tied to an upgrade or an older disc? Read the offer’s conditions. If launching the upgraded PS4 game requires a PS3 disc, Sony says it will not work on PS5.

Compatibility listings and upgrade offers can change. Check the current Sony entry immediately before purchase, especially when buying a PS4 disc for PS5 or relying on an upgrade promotion. No independent statistic establishes a broader rate of PS2 or PS3-disc compatibility, so catalog counts for PS4 games should not be used as evidence that older discs work.
