Before installing a Skyrim NPC overhaul, identify your exact game edition and runtime, then read the overhaul’s current mod page for supported versions, requirements, optional files, installation instructions, incompatibilities, and patches. Next, compare its NPC list with every installed mod that changes appearance, AI, dialogue, packages, cities, or other NPC records.
The critical technical check is whether the winning NPC plugin record matches the FaceGen mesh and texture files that the game loads. Conflicting records and assets can produce a dark face or erase another mod’s behavior. There is no universally correct rule to place every appearance overhaul at the bottom of a load order; you must decide which mod should win for each NPC and make the plugin and asset priorities agree.

1. Confirm the Skyrim edition and runtime
Write down the exact Skyrim edition you are running and the executable runtime version before downloading the overhaul. A mod page may support one edition or runtime while its files, patches, or instructions differ for another. Do not assume that a file made for one release will work simply because both installations are described as Special Edition or Anniversary Edition.
- Check the edition shown by your game launcher or installation.
- Record the runtime number displayed by your mod manager, executable properties, or the relevant version information in the game directory.
- Keep that information beside the mod page while checking downloads and requirements.
Version support is a property of the specific overhaul and release. Broad advice about NPC replacers cannot establish a universal requirement list, so the current page for the file you intend to install is the authority for compatibility claims.

2. Read the overhaul’s complete mod page
Do not stop at the description’s screenshots. Read the requirements, optional files, installation section, compatibility notes, changelog, and posts or notices that identify a broken release. Look for separate downloads for different game versions, body or hair options, patches, loose files, and optional plugins.
Requirements and supported versions
Confirm every required master, framework, asset pack, or companion file listed by the author. A requirement shown on a different NPC overhaul is not evidence that your chosen one needs it. Check whether a requirement is mandatory, optional, or needed only for a particular file.
Optional files and installation variants
Decide which optional appearance, hair, body, or feature files you actually want. Installing several alternatives can create unnecessary asset conflicts. If the page provides a choice between a plugin and a replacer-only file, follow the author’s explanation of what each changes rather than selecting both automatically.

Incompatibilities and patches
Search the page for the names of mods already in your load order. A listed patch may forward appearance records while preserving AI, dialogue, packages, or other edits from the second mod. If no patch is listed, treat that absence as a reason to inspect the conflict yourself, not as proof that the combination is safe.
3. Map which NPCs overlap
Make an overlap list before installing. The most obvious conflict is another appearance overhaul that edits the same NPC, but a city overhaul, quest mod, AI package, dialogue mod, follower overhaul, or any plugin that edits NPC records can also compete with the new file.

Appearance overlap
Compare the NPC names or form lists supplied by each appearance mod. Two overhauls can cover hundreds of different characters without conflict, yet compete on a single merchant, follower, or quest character. Record the intended winner for every overlap instead of choosing one global rule.
Behavior and record overlap
An NPC record contains more than face data. Another plugin may add packages, factions, voice or dialogue links, outfits, inventory, combat settings, skills, or quest-related flags. If the overhaul’s plugin wins the whole record without a patch, those changes may disappear even though the face looks correct.
Make a simple overlap table

4. Understand NPC records and FaceGen
Skyrim stores an NPC’s editable data in a plugin record and stores the generated face as FaceGen mesh and texture files. The game needs those two parts to describe the same version of the character.

In practical terms, a plugin can win the NPC record while another mod’s FaceGen files win the asset conflict. That combination may load a face built for different hair, head parts, tint layers, or sculpt data. The reverse can also happen: the intended plugin wins, but its FaceGen files are missing or overwritten.

For overlapping appearance mods, coordinate plugin order with asset overwrite order. The mod whose NPC record you choose should normally supply the corresponding FaceGen files. If you want another plugin’s AI or dialogue changes as well, use an appropriate compatibility patch or create a deliberate conflict-resolution patch.
5. Compare overhauls by practical decision criteria
If you are choosing among several NPC overhauls, compare their coverage and the work needed to make them coexist rather than relying on screenshots alone.

These criteria tell you how much coordination a combination will require. They are not a universal ranking: the best choice depends on the NPCs you care about and which records you want to preserve.
6. Use this pre-install checklist
- Record your environment. Note the Skyrim edition and runtime before downloading files.
- Read the exact overhaul page. Verify supported versions, requirements, optional downloads, installation steps, incompatibilities, and patches.
- List affected NPCs. Compare the overhaul’s coverage with existing appearance, AI, dialogue, city, quest, follower, and NPC-affecting plugins.
- Search for specific patches. Confirm that a patch supports your exact pair of mods and identify which records it forwards.
- Choose winners per overlap. Decide whose appearance should load for each shared NPC and which behavior or dialogue edits must remain.
- Plan plugin and asset priorities together. Ensure the chosen record winner and its matching FaceGen mesh and texture will both win.
- Inspect unclear conflicts in xEdit. Review the NPC record and the files involved before launching the game.
- Install one logical combination at a time. Keep notes on optional files and priority changes so you can reverse a decision.
7. Set plugin order and asset priority deliberately
Plugin order determines which record wins when multiple plugins edit the same NPC. Asset overwrite order determines which loose or archived FaceGen files are physically available to the game. These are related but separate decisions in a mod manager.

When one overhaul should win completely
If you prefer one mod’s appearance and do not need the other plugin’s NPC edits, let the preferred plugin win the conflict and give its matching FaceGen files priority. Check the conflict view to confirm that the same mod supplies both the record and assets.
When both mods contribute useful changes
If one plugin supplies the desired face while another supplies required AI, dialogue, or packages, do not simply move one entire plugin to the bottom. Use a patch that forwards the required fields, or build a deliberate conflict-resolution patch in xEdit. The patch should preserve the chosen appearance data while retaining the behavior you need.
Why a universal “put it last” rule fails
Moving every appearance mod to the bottom can make an unintended mod win an NPC record, overwrite another overhaul’s FaceGen, or remove behavior changes. The correct position depends on your selected winners and the specific records in conflict.

A general sorting tool can arrange plugins according to rules, but it cannot decide whether you prefer one NPC’s face or another mod’s dialogue. Use xEdit when the mod page does not clearly document the combination.

- Load the relevant plugins and their masters in xEdit.
- Find an overlapping NPC record and view the columns for every plugin that edits it.
- Identify which plugin currently wins the record and note fields changed by other mods, such as head parts, factions, packages, dialogue links, outfit, and inventory.
- Decide whether the winning record contains every change you want.
- Check the mod manager’s file-conflict view for that NPC’s FaceGen mesh and texture files.
- If the record and assets point to different overhauls, adjust priorities or use a patch so they tell the same story.
- Save only an intentional patch or order change, and keep the original mods untouched.
Do not copy every conflicting field automatically. Forward only the edits you understand and need; an indiscriminate merge can introduce unrelated changes from a mod you did not intend to preserve.

9. Troubleshoot a dark or missing face
A dark or black face is a diagnostic clue that the final NPC record and the FaceGen files loaded by the game do not match. It can result from conflicting plugin edits, an unsuitable order, missing FaceGen files, or an asset overwrite from another overhaul.
- Identify the affected NPC. Write down the character’s name and where the problem appears.
- Check the winning record. In xEdit, confirm which plugin supplies the final NPC record and compare its appearance-related fields with the intended overhaul.
- Check the winning assets. In the mod manager, inspect which mod supplies that NPC’s FaceGen mesh and texture.
- Compare priorities. Make plugin order and file overwrite order consistent with the same chosen overhaul.
- Look for missing files. Verify that the selected download includes the FaceGen files and that they were not disabled, omitted, or overwritten.
- Preserve other edits deliberately. If another plugin must retain AI, dialogue, or packages, apply a suitable patch rather than forcing the appearance mod to win every field.
- Retest after one change. Change one priority or patch at a time so you can identify which decision corrected the mismatch.
Do not assume that a cosmetic utility will repair a conflict between two incompatible versions of an NPC record and its FaceGen files.
10. Know what a discoloration fix can and cannot do
The Face Discoloration Fix mod description specifically warns: "if you have a conflict in your load order that breaks those mods, this mod will not be able to restore the intended appearance." Treat that statement as a limitation, not as a substitute for conflict resolution.

Because version support can change, check the fix’s current page before relying on that statement for your runtime. First repair the winning-record and FaceGen relationship; only then consider whether a compatible discoloration utility addresses any remaining issue.
11. Validate the installation in game
After installation, visit several affected NPCs rather than checking only the screenshot character. Confirm that faces display correctly, hair and head parts are present, and important behavior or dialogue from other mods still works.
- Check at least one NPC that only the overhaul changes.
- Check every NPC you identified as an overlap.
- Test an NPC whose AI, dialogue, or package changes you intended to preserve.
- If a face is dark, missing, or unexpectedly reverted, return to the NPC record and asset conflict view before adding another cosmetic mod.
Keep a record of the final winning plugin and asset source for each troublesome NPC. That note makes later upgrades safer because you can compare the new release’s conflicts with a known working arrangement.
