Before preordering, check the exact edition, platform and region, release and access dates, total price, payment timing, bonus conditions, delivery estimate, and the seller’s cancellation and refund terms. There is no universal preorder policy: the rules can change with the storefront, country, purchase date, format, and whether a digital download has started. The key question is whether this specific game and its terms are worth paying for before launch.
Use this checklist before you pay
- Confirm what you are buying. Read the product listing for the exact game, platform, edition, included expansions, cosmetics, currency, and other extras. Compare the edition’s added cost with the content you actually want; a “Deluxe” label alone does not establish better value. If several editions are listed, compare each item rather than relying on a short promotional summary. Check whether listed content is available at launch or delivered later, and whether it requires another purchase or subscription.
- Check platform and compatibility. Verify the console or PC storefront, platform generation, and region. For a physical copy, confirm that your hardware can use its format—for example, whether a disc drive is required. Compatibility depends on the specific game and edition, so do not rely on a similarly named listing. A preorder for one storefront or platform should not be assumed to include access on another; check what the listing says about the version you intend to play.
- Separate release from early access. Note the official release date and any separate advance-access date. Check which edition, if any, includes early play and exactly when it begins. Dates and access can vary by product or region; use the listing for the version you intend to buy. Treat an early-access start as a separate date, not as proof that the official release date has changed.
- Work out the full cost and charge date. Check the checkout total, including applicable tax and shipping, and when the seller will collect payment. Make sure the payment method will still work then, and find out what happens if authorization fails. If payment is deferred, consider whether the card, account balance, or other payment method will remain available when the seller attempts collection. Do not assume all stores charge at order placement.
- For a physical preorder, check fulfillment. Look for the seller’s estimated dispatch or delivery date, shipping method, cancellation cutoff, and return policy. “Release day” availability is not guaranteed by the word preorder. An estimate from one store should not be applied to another seller; check the terms attached to the particular physical listing.
- Read the bonus terms. Confirm that the bonus is actually included with this listing, whether it is limited to a particular seller or edition, how it is delivered, and when it becomes available. Do not count an unlisted bonus as part of the purchase. A code or item may arrive later than the order confirmation, so check any stated payment, preload, or redemption conditions.
- Find the cancellation route before ordering. Identify where to cancel and how refunds are issued. For digital preorders, check whether downloading or streaming content changes eligibility; automatic downloads may matter. Note the relevant deadline and whether it is tied to release, purchase, payment, preload, or play time. Keep the confirmation and order details in case you need to contact the seller.
- Decide how much uncertainty you accept. If useful reviews or performance information are not available before launch, consider whether you are comfortable buying without them. Do not assume a preorder guarantees a discount, scarcity, or a particular launch experience. No current official listing establishes what any one game will cost later or how it will perform, so weigh the known edition and terms against what remains uncertain.
Compare editions and formats on the points that affect you
When listings differ, compare them side by side rather than treating an edition name as a recommendation. The most important factors depend on the game and your priorities. A higher price could reflect content you value, but the name alone cannot tell you whether it is worthwhile. Check whether each extra is usable without a subscription or separate purchase, and whether the format fits your hardware and preferred delivery method.

Can I cancel a game preorder?
Often, but the answer depends on the seller, country, format, timing, and whether a digital download or stream has begun. The examples below are specific published policies, not a universal rule. Check the terms displayed for your own order and region. Also note the event that starts or ends the cancellation window: an order date, payment date, preload, official release, or playtime threshold can matter under different policies.
PlayStation Store: US support terms
Sony’s US support page says a preorder refund may be requested before release. If the purchase was made 14 days or less before release, a request may also be made within 14 days of purchase. For purchases made more than 14 days before release, the stated cancellation window runs until release. In either case, the main content must not have started downloading or streaming. Automatic downloads can start before release if enabled, so check your download settings before a preload. A preorder may include extra content available immediately; cancelling can remove access to that content. Do not start a preload without first considering how it interacts with the terms applicable to your order.
PlayStation Store: UK policy

Nintendo eShop: US digital preorders

A Switch Game Voucher is not set aside when a preorder is placed; it is redeemed when preorder payment is collected. If you use eligible vouchers before then, payment could fail. Check your available payment method and voucher balance as the charge window approaches. The preorder itself therefore does not reserve a voucher at the time you place the order.

Nintendo Store: US physical pre-purchases
Nintendo says physical pre-purchases through Nintendo Store are charged in full immediately, and the item ships one to three business days after its release date. Steam
Steam says a preordered game can be refunded any time before release. After release, a preorder remains eligible if the request is submitted within two weeks of release and the game has been played for less than two hours. The charge date and cancellation deadline may be linked. Nintendo eShop cancellation is available until payment is processed and the game is preloaded, and a failed payment cancels the order. For physical orders and other digital storefronts, use the seller’s own terms rather than assuming Nintendo’s schedule applies. Check which edition offers Advance Access and when it begins. Steam says the standard 14-day post-release refund period begins on the full release date, and an Advance Access preorder can be refunded before Advance Access begins.
