Before selling Bitcoin after a sharp rally, decide what the sale needs to accomplish, identify the Bitcoin lots you would sell, estimate your proceeds after fees and spread, and check how the sale will be taxed where you live. A fast rise alone does not show that a market peak is near, and there is no reliable universal percentage or price that says when to sell.
Start with the reason for selling
Set the goal before choosing a price. You might need a specific amount of cash, want to rebalance a portfolio, or want to reduce how much of your savings depends on Bitcoin. Work out how much you would need to sell to meet that goal rather than letting a round-number price target or online predictions decide for you.

A full sale removes your Bitcoin exposure; a partial sale reduces it but leaves you exposed to future price moves. Neither approach guarantees a better result. Consider whether the cash goal can be met with a partial sale and whether you can tolerate the risk of holding the remainder.

Identify the Bitcoin and tax lots involved
Before placing an order, gather records for the Bitcoin you own and determine which units or tax lots would be sold. Useful records include purchase or receipt dates, quantities, acquisition costs, fees, wallet and exchange transfers, and previous sales or other dispositions. Keep transfer records so you can distinguish movements between accounts you control from transactions that may have tax consequences under the rules that apply to you.

For U.S. federal tax purposes, the Internal Revenue Service treats digital assets as property. Selling Bitcoin for U.S. dollars generally means recognizing a capital gain or loss: broadly, the amount realized is compared with adjusted basis, subject to IRS rules on transaction costs and other details. A capital asset held for one year or less before sale is generally short-term; one held for more than a year is generally long-term. See the IRS digital asset guidance. Tax rules outside the United States, as well as state and local rules, may differ.
Do not assume a broker statement has all the information needed to calculate basis. In a January 28, 2026 reminder, the IRS said many Forms 1099-DA for 2025 may not include basis. Broker reporting applies to covered transactions on or after January 1, 2025, and brokers must send taxpayers copies of covered 2025 information by February 17, 2026. Reconcile any form with your own acquisition and transfer records, and check the IRS guidance for the tax year in which you sell.

Estimate what you will actually receive
The displayed Bitcoin price is not necessarily the amount you will receive. Review the live order preview for the quoted price, order size, spread, explicit trading fee, and estimated net proceeds. Costs and quotes can vary with the venue, market conditions, asset, order size, jurisdiction, and payment method.
For example, Coinbase says its simple-trade quotes may include a spread and that fees and spread details appear in the preview; that is an illustration, not a universal fee schedule. Check the current terms and preview on the platform you use. If your order is large relative to available liquidity, inspect the order book and consider that executing against available orders may produce different prices across the order.

Choose between a market order and a limit order

Order labels, fees, and behavior are venue-specific. Kraken notes that a limit order entered on the wrong side of the order book can execute as a market order; check your platform’s current order rules and review the order details before confirming.
Check access to the cash and protect your account
If you need the proceeds by a particular date, check the exchange’s current settlement timing, fiat withdrawal options and limits, identity-verification requirements, and any account holds before selling. The sale and the arrival of withdrawable cash may not happen at the same time.

Use official account and platform information to verify withdrawal instructions. Do not send Bitcoin to someone who contacts you unexpectedly or pay an unsolicited “unlock” fee to release funds. Investor.gov warns that crypto-related schemes can use urgency and hype to induce people to buy or sell; that general warning is not evidence that a particular Bitcoin rally is manipulated. Save the order confirmation and records showing the sale date and time, units sold, proceeds, fees, and the basis for the units disposed of. The IRS says U.S. taxpayers must report digital-asset transactions whether or not they result in a taxable gain or loss, and should keep records that support their federal tax return. Reporting details depend on the taxpayer and tax year; consult current IRS guidance or a qualified tax professional for your circumstances.
