After Virtualmin installs, do not publish a website immediately. First open the encrypted control panel on port 10000, complete the post-install wizard, verify the server hostname and DNS, choose the appropriate feature profile, install updates, and run Check Configuration. Only after those checks pass should you create a virtual server and test the services you actually intend to use.

This sequence also explains how to work safely when the hostname certificate is not ready, when DNS is managed elsewhere, and when a mini installation needs features added later.

Post-install sequence at a glance
- Open
https://your-hostname:10000. If DNS is not ready, usehttps://server-ip:10000. - Sign in with root or an account that has the required sudo privileges.
- Complete the guided post-install wizard for the server’s intended environment.
- Confirm that the hostname is fully qualified, differs from every hosted domain, and resolves publicly if you want automatic certificate issuance.
- Review the full or mini feature profile and install only the services the server is meant to operate.
- Apply operating-system and Virtualmin package updates.
- On List Virtual Servers, click Check Configuration and resolve every reported issue.
- Create the first virtual server, then test its web, DNS, mail, database, and SSL functions according to the features you enabled.
- Configure an off-server backup destination and perform a restore test before treating the server as protected.
Each step removes a different class of failure. The wizard sets defaults, hostname and DNS determine whether certificates can be issued, updates close known package gaps, and the configuration check catches service-level problems before a customer site depends on them.
Open Virtualmin safely and finish the wizard
Connect on port 10000
Virtualmin’s control panel is served over HTTPS on port 10000. Browse to https://your-hostname:10000 once the hostname resolves. A DNS record is not required for the first login, so use https://server-ip:10000 when the name has not propagated or the DNS zone is still maintained by another provider.
#1 Best Overall
Authenticate with root or a sudo-capable account. Use the account intended for ongoing administration rather than creating a website first and postponing the administrative setup; the wizard and configuration check need system-level access.
Answer the post-install questions
Follow the guided post-install wizard to configure Virtualmin for the environment. It asks setup questions that determine which services and defaults are enabled. Treat each answer as an operational decision: a mail server, local DNS, filtering stack, FTP service, and Jailkit all add packages and maintenance responsibilities.
Do not skip the wizard merely because the panel opens. An installation that reaches the login screen can still have an unsuitable profile, an unresolved hostname, or incomplete service configuration. Finish the wizard, allow it to apply the selected settings, and then continue with the checks below.
Set a hostname that can support DNS and SSL
Use a distinct fully qualified hostname
The system hostname should be a fully qualified name such as host.example.com. It must not be exactly the same name as a domain you plan to host in Virtualmin. For example, if the first website will be example.com, use a separate host name rather than assigning example.com to the server itself.
A distinct hostname prevents an administrative identity from colliding with a hosted virtual server. It also gives certificate automation a stable name for the control panel and system services.
Make the name resolve publicly
Automatic certificate issuance requires the hostname to resolve correctly and the necessary ports to be reachable from the certificate authority. Create the appropriate public DNS record for the hostname and point it at the server before requesting the certificate. If your authoritative DNS is external, make the change at that provider and wait until the record is publicly visible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDo not assume that a local hosts-file entry is enough for certificate issuance. It can help you reach the panel from one machine, but it does not establish the public DNS condition required by an automated certificate request.

Handle the initial SSL warning
During installation, Virtualmin attempts to request a real certificate for the system hostname. If DNS is not correct yet, or required ports cannot be reached, that request may fail. In that situation, connect by IP, accept the temporary browser warning solely to complete setup, and repair the hostname certificate after DNS and reachability are corrected.
The warning is a setup state, not a production endpoint. Once the hostname resolves and the service can be reached as required, request or renew the certificate for the hostname and verify that the browser presents the expected name without a warning.
Choose the full or mini feature profile
The profile determines which major services are installed locally. Select it according to the services you will operate, not according to the smallest possible package set.
| Capability | Full profile | Mini profile |
|---|---|---|
| Local mail handling | Included | Omitted |
| Spam and virus filtering | Included | Omitted |
| Local DNS service | Included | Omitted |
| FTP service | Included | Omitted |
| Jailkit | Included | Omitted |
When full is appropriate
Choose the full profile when this server will provide local mailboxes, spam or virus filtering, authoritative or local DNS service, FTP access, or Jailkit-based isolation. Installing these components together gives Virtualmin the packages it expects for those workflows.
When mini is appropriate
Choose mini when mail, DNS, file transfer, and isolation are intentionally handled elsewhere or are not needed. A mini installation is not a broken full installation; it is a smaller service plan. Features omitted by the profile can be enabled later, but the required packages must be installed and the change should be treated as a planned maintenance task.
Write down which services are external before choosing mini. For example, if another provider handles authoritative DNS, your Virtualmin server still needs correct records at that provider; installing local DNS later will not automatically transfer authority.
Size memory for the selected plan
| Installation profile | Virtualmin guidance |
|---|---|
| Minimal installation | At least 1 GiB RAM |
| Full installation with mail, spam filtering, and virus scanning | 4 GiB RAM or more |
These figures are listed on Virtualmin’s 2026 automated-installation guidance. They are baseline requirements, not a promise that every workload will perform identically. Mail filtering, databases, traffic, and additional applications can increase demand, so monitor the server after enabling services.

Use the dashboard
Virtualmin’s dashboard provides an Install All Updates Now action. Use it after the wizard so the panel and its managed packages are current before you create the first production account.
Use the operating-system package manager
The Virtualmin FAQ documents these command-line routes:
- On an Enterprise Linux system, run
dnf update -y. - On a Debian-derived system, run
apt-get update && apt-get upgrade -y.
Run the command appropriate to the installed operating system, review any service restart or configuration prompts, and confirm that the update completes successfully. Do not mix package-manager commands from different operating-system families.
Update application installer metadata
If Virtualmin-managed applications will be installed, enable System Settings → Web App Installers → Installer Updates. This updates the metadata used by the application installer; it is separate from updating the operating system itself.

Run Check Configuration before creating a site
The configuration check is the gate between a completed installation and the first virtual server. Open List Virtual Servers and click Check Configuration at the top of the page. Virtualmin’s documentation identifies this as the final installation step.
What to fix
Work through every reported hostname, DNS, service, package, and certificate error. A warning about the hostname belongs in the DNS and certificate workflow above; a missing package belongs in the profile or update workflow; a service error requires correcting that service before a website relies on it.
Run the check again after making changes. Do not treat a site that happens to load over HTTP as proof that the server is ready: the check is designed to expose system-level problems that a single page request cannot reveal.

What a clean result means
A passing check means Virtualmin’s basic configuration is coherent enough to proceed with virtual-server creation. It does not replace testing your specific DNS records, application database connection, mail route, or certificate. Those are verified after the first site exists.
Create and test the first virtual server
Create the account only after the check passes
Use Virtualmin’s virtual-server creation workflow after the configuration check is clean. Choose the domain, administrative credentials, and intentionally enabled services. The first virtual server is a test of the complete plan, so avoid enabling local mail or DNS accidentally if those functions are operated by another provider.
Verify web access
- Confirm the intended DNS records point the domain to the server or to the documented proxy endpoint.
- Open the site over HTTP and HTTPS and confirm that the expected virtual server responds.
- Check that the certificate name matches the domain being visited, not merely the system hostname.
If HTTPS reaches the wrong site, verify the DNS destination and the virtual-server domain before changing certificates. If the certificate is for another name, correct the virtual-server SSL setup and request the certificate for the actual domain.
Verify DNS ownership and behavior
Determine whether DNS is local or external. With local DNS, confirm that the relevant zone and records are served by the Virtualmin host. With external DNS, verify the records at that provider and make sure the server is not expected to answer authoritatively for a zone it does not operate.
Test mail only when local mail is enabled
If the selected profile includes local mail handling, send and receive a test message using the new account. Confirm both directions and inspect the result for routing or certificate errors. If mail is external, do not use a local send-and-receive test as proof of the external provider’s configuration; verify the records and service at the provider instead.

Keep the backup destination independent of the Virtualmin host. A local archive can disappear with the server, its disk, or its account, whereas an off-server destination provides recovery isolation.
Best Value
Choose a destination and retention plan
Virtualmin 8 release documentation describes cloud-backup enhancements and support for many S3-compatible storage providers. Treat provider compatibility as something to verify against the installed Virtualmin version, operating system, and provider terms before relying on it.
Decide what retention you need, where credentials are stored, and who can retrieve an archive. The destination should be reachable without depending on the same server that is being protected.

A successful upload proves only that an archive was written. Perform a restore test using a representative virtual server or files, verify that the restored data opens correctly, and record the recovery procedure. Repeat the test after changing the backup provider, profile, or major Virtualmin version.
Decide where DNS and integrations belong
Local versus external DNS
Local DNS keeps zone operations on the Virtualmin host and may suit a server that is intended to provide the DNS service. External DNS separates authoritative records from the web server and can be appropriate when another operator already manages the domain. Choose one authority for each zone and document where changes must be made.
Optional integrations in Virtualmin 8
Virtualmin 8 release notes describe enhancements for DNS and backups, Cloudflare DNS and proxy features, many S3-compatible storage providers, and multiple ACME-compatible SSL providers. Availability and behavior depend on the installed Virtualmin version, operating system, and provider terms. Enable an integration only after confirming those conditions and testing the resulting DNS, proxy, certificate, or backup workflow.
Troubleshooting common post-install failures
The panel opens only by IP
Keep using the IP for setup, then create or correct the public DNS record for the fully qualified hostname. Once the name resolves to the server and required ports are reachable, repair the hostname certificate and retest the panel by name.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The browser shows a certificate warning
For an initial DNS failure, the warning is expected while connecting by IP or while a temporary certificate is in use. Correct DNS and reachability, then obtain the hostname certificate. Do not leave the warning unresolved for normal administration.
Check Configuration reports missing services
Revisit the full-versus-mini decision. If the service is required, install the relevant package and complete its configuration; if it is intentionally external, keep the local service disabled and ensure the external DNS or mail plan is documented. Run the check again after the change.
A feature omitted by mini is now needed
Install the required packages and plan the change as an administrative maintenance task. Recheck memory and operational responsibilities, then run Check Configuration before creating or modifying production virtual servers.
