Choose a build goal, collect and tune gear for it, keep progressing through SHD Levels, and pursue the story, challenge, or PvP activities you enjoy. For a high-risk challenge, Year 8’s permanent Escalation activity rotates eligible missions and strongholds weekly; it uses wagered Tokens and has no checkpoints.
Start with a goal, not a checklist
Level 40 is the start of the endgame loop. There is no single required sequence that every agent must finish. Decide what you want your character to do well—deal weapon damage, rely on skills, support a group, or survive under pressure—and use that choice to guide which gear you keep and which activities you play. Ubisoft’s endgame guide describes loot collection, builds, and the Recalibration Library as core parts of this progression. No one build is best for every role or activity.
How to build a useful level 40 loadout
Pick one build direction
Choose a role before chasing specific pieces. A weapon-damage setup, skill-focused setup, support build, and survivability build value different combinations of gear and attributes. Starting with one direction makes drops easier to evaluate and helps prevent your inventory filling with items that do not support a coherent loadout.
Farm upgrades and save useful attributes
Replay missions and open-world activities for gear, and raise their difficulty when you can handle it. Ubisoft says higher-difficulty activities improve the chance of stronger gear. Store useful attributes and talents in the Recalibration Library rather than keeping every duplicate item; the library lets you retain valuable options for later gear adjustments. See Ubisoft’s overview of endgame activities.

Keep SHD progression moving
SHD Levels are the level 40 progression system Ubisoft describes for ongoing character development. They award points for core attribute categories, followed by scavenging once those finite categories are maxed. Treat this as a long-term track, not a gate you must grind to a particular number before playing other modes. Ubisoft explains the system in its Warlords of New York expansion overview.
Follow the story and seasonal objectives you can access
Manhunts and seasons provide narrative goals and rewards. Seasonal rules can change, so check the in-game season interface for what is currently active rather than relying on an old season name or reward list. Ubisoft’s Seasons 2.0 FAQ describes a separate seasonal-character structure: seasonal progression and rewards—including SHD levels, proficiency ranks, stash items, and collectibles—transfer to the main character during Intermission. Seasonal characters do not receive Expertise upgrades. Regular non-seasonal characters remain accessible during a season, but cannot play its seasonal content outside Intermission.

Ubisoft estimates reaching level 40 takes approximately 45 hours for non-seasonal characters and approximately 15 hours for seasonal characters under the leveling journey described in that FAQ. These are estimates, not guaranteed playtimes or estimates of how long the level 40 endgame takes.
Choose activities by what you want from them
Endgame options serve different purposes. Ordinary mission and open-world replays are useful for gear collection; Manhunts and seasonal objectives emphasize story and rewards; Legendary strongholds and higher global difficulty raise the challenge; and the Dark Zone offers a PvP-focused experience. Escalation adds a tougher PvE pursuit. Compare them by goal, risk, group format, and access rather than assuming one is universally best.

What Year 8 adds: Escalation, Retaliation, and Prototype gear
Escalation carries a real failure cost
Ubisoft’s 2026 Rise Up announcement describes Escalation as a permanent difficulty and the game’s highest difficulty. Eligible missions and strongholds rotate weekly. Runs consume wagered Tokens, with Tokens awarded or deducted according to the outcome; there are no checkpoints. The activity supports solo play, groups, and public matchmaking. Since a failed run costs the wager, learn the activity at a lower tier before committing more Tokens.
Retaliation adds a seasonal element
The Rise Up announcement says Black Tusk joins Retaliation, including a special Elite Kill Squad that is season-limited. Black Tusk Retaliations themselves are described as permanent. Check the current in-game season information for what is active; the announcement does not establish which season is live on October 8, 2026.
Prototype gear is a later destination
Prototype rarity and Augments are part of the 2026 update. Selected High-End, Gear Set, and Named items may be upgraded to Prototype if they are level 40, have maxed Expertise, and have optimized attributes. Prototype items can also drop in Escalation. These requirements make Prototype gear a demanding late-stage goal, not a first priority for a fresh level 40 character. Details are in Ubisoft’s Rise Up announcement.
Do you need Warlords of New York?
No expansion is required to reach level 40 or access general endgame content such as gear, modes, and Manhunts. Warlords of New York does gate its New York map, story missions, and some skill variants. Ubisoft’s Seasons 2.0 FAQ identifies an exception for the Faye Lau Climax Mission and the Achilles Pulse variant, subject to already having the Pulse platform. Reaching the level cap therefore does not mean every location, mission, or skill is unlocked.
