For a player looking at a colored name in Roblox chat, the short answer is that the color has no universal meaning such as rank or status: Roblox says in-experience name colors are assigned at random and players cannot manually change them. A particular experience can also use team colors or developer-customized chat styling, so a color alone does not identify what another player represents.
What a colored name means in Roblox chat
Roblox Support says: “Currently, in-experience name colors are assigned at random. At this time, there is no way to manually assign this color or change it.” That is the general player-facing explanation, not a universal color-to-role chart.
However, the chat shown inside a specific experience can be styled differently. In Roblox’s default TextChatService chat window, a player’s name prefix follows their TeamColor when they belong to a team. Developers can also customize name colors. This means context matters: a color may reflect team styling or custom presentation in one experience, but the same color does not carry a reliable meaning across Roblox.
How to tell a name color from team chat
Roblox’s default team channel adds a [Team] label and uses a team-colored name prefix. If you see that marker, the color can help identify the configured team channel in that experience. Without the marker or other evidence of team chat, do not assume a colored name signals a team, rank, or role.

“Chat color” can refer to different things
The name prefix, the text of a message, and a speech bubble are separate UI elements. Roblox’s chat-window styling controls can affect prefixes and message presentation, while bubble appearance has its own configuration. A colored speech bubble or message body therefore does not, by itself, explain the meaning of a player’s name color.
For developers, Roblox documents default bubble-chat values of background color [250, 250, 250], text color [57, 59, 61], and text size 16. These are appearance defaults, not codes that assign a meaning to a player’s name.

Can you change your Roblox chat name color?
Roblox Support says players currently cannot manually assign or change their in-experience name color. Developers have separate tools to customize how chat appears in their experiences: name-prefix styling is handled in the chat window, while bubble colors are configured independently through BubbleChatConfiguration.
What the legacy ChatColor values mean
Roblox’s legacy ChatColor enum lists Blue (0), Green (1), Red (2), and White (3). These are API values used with legacy chat methods; they are not a guide for interpreting another player’s name color.
