Once the Lithographic Stone door opens in the Bindery, leave through it and follow the corridor. When a creature skitters along the wall, turn left immediately for the Small Key. Return to the Bindery, unlock the drawer for the Brass Pocket Watch, then continue through the corridor, move the bookshelf, and deal with the Plaga encounter. Descend to the Merchant and Typewriter, shoot the counterweight, and enter the castle battlements.
The route in one glance
The Lithographic Stone puzzle is not the end of the Bindery sequence. The next mandatory objective is a short backtrack for a key item, followed by a corridor fight and a counterweight that opens the way to the battlements. The order matters because the locked drawer is behind you, while the gate to the next area cannot be raised until you reach the lower section near the Merchant and Typewriter.

Check the stone solution before moving on
If you have not opened the door yet, the arrangement is fixed even though the positions where you find individual stones can vary slightly between playthroughs. Three stones are collected in the Bindery and one is already set in the door. Every stone has two sides, so rotate or flip each piece until the required icon and shape are visible.
| Position in the door | Required icon | Required shape |
|---|---|---|
| Left | Orange/red helmet | Hexagon |
| Top | Orange/red shield | Square |
| Right | Blue sword | Square |
| Bottom | Blue armor | Hexagon |
The important distinction is between the symbol and the outline. A stone showing the right color but the wrong icon or shape is still in the wrong position. Turn the piece over or rotate it rather than searching for a different stone.

- Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
- Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
- Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
- Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

Get the Small Key after the door opens
Follow the wall-running creature
Leave through the newly opened door and stay on the corridor path. You will see something move along the wall ahead. Do not continue past that moment. Turn left at once and inspect the cabinet in the side area. The Small Key is the first mandatory pickup after the puzzle.
If you run beyond the turn, you can simply retrace your steps. The key is not obtained from the wall creature, and it is not in the main corridor itself; it is in the cabinet reached by that immediate left turn.
Return to the Bindery drawer
With the Small Key in your inventory, backtrack through the opened route to the Bindery. Find the previously locked drawer and use the key on it. The drawer contains the Brass Pocket Watch. This is an optional treasure in the sense that it does not open the battlements gate, but it is the only reason to make the short return trip, so collect it before continuing.
After opening the drawer, head back out through the Lithographic doorway and resume the corridor route. The key is consumed by the drawer; there is no second lock on the path that requires it.
Push the bookshelf and survive the Plaga encounter
Clear the obstruction
Continue down the corridor from the Bindery until a bookshelf blocks the way. Interact with it to push it aside. This exposes the next section and triggers the encounter involving a Zealot and a spider-like Plaga.

- TERRIFYING ZOMBIES WAITING AROUND EVERY CORNER -- Driven by insatiable hunger, these creatures act on instinct, gnashing their teeth, ripping at flesh, and devouring their victims. The new immersive camera lets you feel their fangs as they sink into your flesh.
- RACCOON CITY, REBUILT IN INTRICATE DETAIL -- The characters, environments, and story have all been rebuilt from the ground up to create a terrifying world that feels both nostalgic and new.
- NEW FOR PLAYSTATION5 – Upgraded features new to the PlayStation5 version of the game include a higher frame rate, 3D audio, added ray tracing, and engaging DualSense support for Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers.
Choose how to handle the host
You can fight the Zealot normally, or concentrate on the Plaga itself. Shooting the parasite off the host removes the immediate Plaga threat; alternatively, damage the Zealot while managing the parasite’s attacks. The encounter is notable because it is the first appearance of this spider-like Plaga behavior on this route, so the enemy may seem to attack from an unexpected angle when it separates from the host.
- Keep enough room to see the parasite when it leaves the Zealot.
- Do not assume that staggering the host has ended the encounter; confirm that the Plaga is no longer active.
- Once the passage is clear, continue toward the lower floor rather than returning to the puzzle room.
Open the gate near the Merchant and Typewriter
Follow the route downstairs. You will reach the area containing the Merchant and a Typewriter. Nearby, a counterweight controls the gate leading toward the castle battlements. Shoot the counterweight. The gate rises, creating the only main-progression route from this section into the battlements.
If the gate does not move, check that you are targeting the counterweight mechanism rather than the gate itself. There is no alternate corridor that bypasses this trigger. Once it opens, pass through and prepare for a larger outdoor sequence involving gates, towers, an armoured giant, and a cannon.
Cross the castle battlements
Lower the first drawbridge
On the battlements, locate the first counterweight and shoot it to lower the drawbridge. Crossing this bridge begins the route through the towers. The battlements are less linear than the Bindery corridor, so use the visible tower connections and gates as your navigation markers.
Use the sun and moon gate switches
The next doors are controlled by sun-and-moon switches. Operate the switches that correspond to the door you need to open, then move through the newly available route. You will need to work around the towers rather than trying to force a locked gate from the wrong side. If a door remains closed, look for the matching switch in the adjacent battlement section before moving on.

Avoid the armoured giant’s rocks
An armoured giant attacks by throwing rocks across the battlements. Keep moving between cover and the available tower paths instead of standing in the open to aim. The objective at this stage is to reach the cannon mechanism; trading shots with the giant from exposed ground wastes time and leaves you vulnerable to the thrown projectiles.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Raise the cannon
The cannon is held down by two counterweights. Find and destroy both of them. Once both counterweights are gone, the cannon rises into firing position. If it does not lift, one of the two mechanisms has not been destroyed yet; search the surrounding tower route for the remaining counterweight.
Fire on the armoured El Gigante
Use the raised cannon against the armoured El Gigante. The cannon shot is the intended way to defeat this battlement threat, so conserve ordinary ammunition while you are reaching the weapon. After the giant is dealt with, turn the cannon toward the large exit gate and fire again. This second shot creates the route out of the battlements.
Continue to the Courtyard and finish Chapter 8
After the exit gate is opened, follow the path onward to the Courtyard. Reaching the Courtyard triggers the ending cutscene for Chapter 8, after which Chapter 9 begins. If you are checking your progress, the chapter does not end when the Lithographic door opens, when the gate near the Merchant rises, or when the El Gigante is defeated; it ends after you take the opened route to the Courtyard.

| Area | Optional item | How it fits the route |
|---|---|---|

The Brass Pocket Watch is the only item in this list tied directly to the post-puzzle backtrack. The battlement treasures can be collected while you are routing between the switches, counterweights, and cannon, but they are not required to lower the drawbridge or open the exit gate.
Common mistakes and quick fixes
You cannot find the Small Key
Return to the first corridor after leaving the Lithographic door and watch for the wall-running movement. The correct turn is the immediate left at that moment, and the key is inside the cabinet there. Searching the Bindery again before taking this detour will not reveal it.
The locked drawer will not open
Make sure you picked up the Small Key rather than merely inspecting the cabinet. Then return to the Bindery drawer; it is deliberately placed behind you, so continuing forward will not bring you to it.
The bookshelf does not seem interactive
You must approach it from the corridor after collecting the Brass Pocket Watch. The bookshelf is the obstruction that opens the Plaga encounter route, not a decoration in the original puzzle room.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The gate near the Merchant stays down
Descend all the way to the Merchant and Typewriter area and look for the counterweight controlling the gate. Shoot the mechanism itself. The gate only rises after that counterweight is destroyed.
The cannon will not rise
Two counterweights hold it down. Destroying one is not enough. Circle through the battlement towers and locate the second mechanism, then return to the cannon.
You are unsure where Chapter 8 ends
After the cannon opens the large exit gate, keep following the route until you reach the Courtyard. The cutscene there marks the end of Chapter 8 and the transition into Chapter 9.
