Beneath Cursed Sands does not let you enter Menaphos. It advances the Menaphos storyline and is required for access to the Tombs of Amascut. Jagex’s 2022 poll explicitly said the city gates would not open yet. If you mean preparing for Beneath Cursed Sands, complete its quest and skill requirements, bring the listed supplies, and prepare for desert hazards and several demanding fights.
What Beneath Cursed Sands unlocks—and what it does not
Jagex’s official Beneath Cursed Sands poll states that completing the quest is required to access the Tombs of Amascut. The same poll clarifies: “Menaphos will not be opening its gates just yet.” So treat this as preparation for the quest and its storyline progression, not as a route into the city itself.

- Reach 62 Agility, 55 Crafting, and 55 Firemaking. These levels are unboostable and required to start the quest.
Quest chain to finish first
Contact! requires Prince Ali Rescue and Icthlarin’s Little Helper. The latter requires Gertrude’s Cat. Finish the chain before setting out to begin Beneath Cursed Sands.

Items to bring
The quest guide lists the following items:
- Coal
- An iron bar
- A tinderbox
- A spade
- Cooked or raw meat
Fish and raw yak meat do not count as the required meat. You can obtain a tinderbox and spade during the quest, and buy suitable meat from a shop along the way. For a smoother start, bring the coal, iron bar, and eligible meat rather than relying on finding supplies after you begin.
Prepare for desert hazards and combat
The guide recommends combat equipment and food suited to your character, protection from desert heat such as waterskins or a Desert amulet 4, and a way to prevent or treat poison. Stamina potions can help in the dungeon. These are preparation recommendations, not additional requirements to start the quest.

What fights to expect
The listed encounters include a level 174 Head Menaphite Guard, fought without protection prayers; two level 119 Scarab Mages; the level 379 Champion of Scabaras; and the level 351 Menaphite Akh. These levels describe the encounters, not a guaranteed combat-level threshold for completing the quest. Bring gear and food appropriate to your character, and be ready for the section where protection prayers are unavailable.
Optional travel conveniences
Travel methods mentioned in the quest guide can make reaching or moving through the area more convenient, but they are not entry requirements. These include a Dramen staff for fairy ring AKP, a Pharaoh’s sceptre for travel to the necropolis, and a Nardah teleport method.

- Finish Contact! and its prerequisite quests.
- Meet the unboostable 62 Agility, 55 Crafting, and 55 Firemaking requirements.
