Start by getting into the Realm of Shadow, then reach the first Site of Grace in Gravesite Plain. From there, collect the early blessing items nearby and spend them at a Grace before you commit to the harder fights. The Realm is an open region, so the order below is a sound default rather than a required route.
Get into the Realm of Shadow
The expansion requires the base game, ELDEN RING. Entry to the Realm of Shadow is gated by two bosses and one interaction:
- Defeat Starscourge Radahn.
- Defeat Mohg, Lord of Blood.
- After Mohg falls, interact with the arm protruding from the cocoon in Mohgwyn Dynasty Mausoleum.
Once you rest at any Site of Grace inside the Realm of Shadow, you can open the map and fast travel between that Grace and the Lands Between. The travel link depends on that first rest, so touch a Grace as soon as you arrive. If you die before reaching a Grace, you return to Miquella’s cocoon and use the arm again to re-enter.
A practical opening sequence
The following order is a recommendation based on where the early blessing items are, not a rule the game enforces.

- Activate the first Site of Grace in Gravesite Plain. This gives you a return point and opens the cross-realm travel described above.
- Explore the area around Gravesite Plain before taking on the nearest legacy dungeon. The two early blessing pickups are both close enough to reach on this first loop.
- Collect the early blessing items. Bandai Namco Entertainment’s official guidance points to the Scadutree Fragments at the Church of Consolation and a Revered Spirit Ash dropped by a hornsent corpse at the edge of the Scorched Ruins. Both item types can also drop from enemies.
- Rest at a Site of Grace and apply them. After you obtain a blessing item, the Shadow Realm Blessing menu appears at a Grace. Use it to apply the items you have.
- If an enemy or boss feels unusually punishing, gather more fragments and ashes before retrying. Returning to the same fight with stronger blessings is usually more efficient than repeated attempts at the same strength.
The early pickups at a glance
- Scadutree Fragments: Church of Consolation, and enemy drops.
- Revered Spirit Ash: a hornsent corpse at the edge of the Scorched Ruins, and enemy drops.
- Both item types are reserved for the Realm of Shadow; they have no effect in the Lands Between.
How the two blessings work
The two blessings are complementary. Both can be active at the same time, and each affects a different part of your party.

Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe’s official guide (2024) describes the scaling this way: “The increase is applied as a percentage on top of your base values, so regardless of your equipment, you’ll always get a big bump in survivability.” That makes the Scadutree Blessing’s value depend on your existing stats rather than on a fixed number, so the same fragment helps more on a build that already has strong defenses or offense.

If you do not own the base game
The expansion cannot be played on its own. Bandai Namco lists a Shadow of the Erdtree Edition that includes both the base game and the expansion. Anyone who already owns ELDEN RING only needs the expansion content. Check the current contents of any edition on the platform you plan to buy from before purchasing.
