If a browser warns that a website may be dangerous, leave the page. Don’t enter a password or payment details, download a file, or follow a prompt to install a “security update.” If you’re asking, “What should I do if a website says it may be dangerous?”, the safest first step is not to proceed: Google Chrome Help says, “If you see this warning, we recommend that you don’t visit the site.”
What a malware or phishing warning means
A warning is a protective signal that a browser or security service has detected a potential risk. Chrome says warnings can relate to phishing, social engineering, malware, or unwanted software; Microsoft describes an Edge SmartScreen warning as a sign that a site may be trying to trick someone into installing something dangerous or revealing passwords or card numbers. Google Chrome Help: Manage warnings about unsafe sites · Microsoft Support: Securely browse the web in Microsoft Edge
It does not, by itself, prove that your device is infected, that a crime has occurred, or that every page on a domain is permanently unsafe. A legitimate site can be compromised or mistakenly flagged, and scammers can impersonate legitimate organizations. Treat uncertainty as a reason to verify independently—not as permission to ignore the warning. Google Safe Browsing
What to do when the warning appears
- Stop interacting with the page. Close the tab or use the browser’s back control. Don’t choose buttons to continue, download, update, scan, or call support. A page’s virus warning may itself be a lure to install harmful software. Google Chrome Help: Manage warnings about unsafe sites
- Don’t share information or download anything. Keep passwords, card numbers, payment information, and personal details off the warned page. Don’t open files or apps it offers.
- Verify any claimed organization independently. If the page says it is a bank, retailer, delivery company, employer, or government office, open a new tab and use a saved favorite or find the organization independently. Contact it through its official website, a bill, or a membership card—not details on the suspicious page or message. Microsoft Support: Protect yourself from phishing
- Keep browser protection on. Chrome warns that turning off Safe Browsing also disables download warnings and does not recommend doing so. Don’t switch off protection just to reach the page. Google Chrome Help: Manage warnings about unsafe sites
- Report the site if appropriate. In Microsoft Edge, the reporting path is Settings and More > Help and feedback > Report unsafe site. Chrome’s unsafe-site help also describes its warning and feedback routes. Microsoft Support: Securely browse the web in Microsoft Edge · Google Chrome Help: Manage warnings about unsafe sites
Choose recovery steps based on what happened
Seeing a warning without interacting with the page is different from entering credentials, paying, or installing software. Use the branch that matches your actions.

| What happened | First action | Who to contact |
|---|---|---|
| You only saw the warning | Leave the page; don’t enter details or download anything. | No account or financial contact is needed solely because the warning appeared. |
| You entered a password or account details | Change the affected password and any reused password; enable multifactor authentication where available. | Tell workplace or school IT if it was a work or school account. |
| You shared financial details or paid | Contact the financial institution promptly and explain what was exposed or paid. | Your bank, card issuer, or other financial institution; local law enforcement if money was lost or identity theft occurred. |
| You downloaded or installed a file or app | Don’t open more files from the source. If scam-directed software was installed, uninstall it, run a full Microsoft Defender Antivirus scan, and apply security updates. | Workplace IT for managed devices; seek qualified help if symptoms or unauthorized access continue. |
| You called a pop-up number or allowed remote access | Stop following the pop-up’s instructions. If you installed software or paid, follow those recovery steps too. | Contact your financial institution if you paid; workplace IT if the device or account is managed. |
If you entered a password or account details
Write down what you entered and which account was involved. Change its password immediately, and change it anywhere else you reused it. Choose unique passwords and turn on multifactor authentication (MFA) if available. If the credentials belonged to work or school, notify that organization’s IT team. Microsoft Support: Protect yourself from phishing
If you shared banking or card details, or paid
Use your bank’s or card issuer’s official app, the number on your card or statement, or a known official website. Explain that details may have been exposed or that you paid a suspected scammer, and follow the institution’s advice. If money was lost or identity theft occurred, Microsoft advises reporting it to local law enforcement. Microsoft Support: Protect yourself from phishing · Microsoft Learn: Tech Support Scams

- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
If you downloaded or installed something
Don’t open more files from the suspicious source. For software installed at a scammer’s request, Microsoft advises uninstalling the requested applications, running a full Microsoft Defender Antivirus scan, and applying security updates. Change passwords and watch for unusual sign-in activity after this type of incident. A scan is a useful step, not proof by itself that a device is clean; contact workplace IT for a managed device, or seek qualified help if symptoms or unauthorized access persist. If a pop-up showed a phone number or someone controlled your computer
Don’t call the number shown in a pop-up. Microsoft says its error and warning messages never include a phone number. If you already installed software or paid after speaking with someone, use the relevant recovery steps above. Microsoft Learn: Tech Support Scams

Could the warning be mistaken?
It could be: a legitimate site may be compromised or flagged, and some suspicious-site notices can concern a site that may be legitimate. But don’t test that by returning through the warning or turning off browser protection. Reach the organization independently and verify through contact details you already trust. Microsoft Support: Securely browse the web in Microsoft Edge
If you own a site that SmartScreen has flagged and believe the flag is mistaken, Microsoft provides a feedback process to report it as safe and request review. That process is for site owners; visitors should not bypass a warning on its strength. Microsoft SmartScreen FAQ
