Xbox’s published claim process is to insert a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc into a supported console and launch the game. Not every disc qualifies, and an Xbox Series S cannot read physical discs.
First, identify which disc and licence you mean
Xbox’s disc-to-digital entitlement is not the same as playing a game from its disc. The claim feature applies only to eligible discs, while ordinary disc play and backward-compatible play follow their own rules. A failed claim does not, by itself, show that the console or disc drive is faulty.
Check whether your console can perform the claim

Confirm that the specific disc is eligible
Eligibility is not universal. Xbox says most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support the feature, but Microsoft’s usage rules explicitly say not all discs are eligible. Eligibility may vary for technical, licensing, publishing, or other reasons, and Microsoft may add or remove eligible discs. Xbox described the launch as starting with “thousands of titles” and said it expected to add more over time. That is the announcement’s dated launch description, not a current count of eligible discs. [Xbox Wire, August 26, 2026]
Retry the published claim action
- On an Xbox One or Xbox Series X with a disc drive, insert the game disc.
- Launch the game from the console and check whether the claim completes or the game displays an eligibility message.
- Write down the full on-screen error if the claim still fails; do not assume every failure has the same cause.
Keep the qualifying disc
The digital entitlement remains conditional on continued possession of the qualifying disc. Microsoft says the licence may need to be revalidated and can be suspended or revoked if you no longer possess the disc; the entitlement cannot be transferred separately from it. If the checks do not resolve it
The available official information does not establish one universal fix or a reliable error-code-to-fix mapping. If the console can read the disc and it appears eligible but the claim still fails, contact Xbox Support and provide:
- the exact error message or code;
- the game title and edition shown on the disc or packaging;
- your console model; and
- whether the console recognizes and launches the disc.
Those details help distinguish a claim or eligibility problem from ordinary disc-play trouble without resorting to unverified resets or workarounds.
