Microsoft says you must continue to possess the qualifying disc, and access may be suspended or revoked if you no longer do. A digital purchase, by contrast, is governed by your Microsoft account and Home-console rules, with no qualifying game disc required.
What Xbox disc-to-digital does
Xbox says players can claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported game disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and launching the game. The feature is not a conversion of every physical game: Xbox says most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support it, but eligibility varies by title and can change. Check the current claim flow for your specific disc before relying on it. Xbox Wire’s feature announcement describes the process and initial rollout.
The key distinction is that the disc remains part of the entitlement. Microsoft’s digital goods usage rules state that the limited digital license remains conditioned on continued possession of the qualifying disc. It cannot be transferred separately, and Microsoft may revalidate eligibility or suspend or revoke access if you no longer possess that disc.

Can I sell or give away the disc after claiming?
Do not count on keeping access after transferring the disc. Microsoft conditions the limited digital license on continued possession of the qualifying disc and says the license cannot be transferred separately. Its rules allow access to be suspended or revoked if you no longer possess it. The policy does not spell out the behavior of every resale or loan scenario, so keep the disc if you rely on the entitlement.
Can I use the feature with an Xbox Series S?
No. Claiming requires inserting the disc into a supported disc-reading Xbox, and the Series S has no disc drive. Xbox describes the Series S as an all-digital console and says disc-based games are unsupported. If you own a qualifying disc but want to use a Series S, you would need access to a compatible disc-reading Xbox to perform the claim step; the Series S itself cannot read the disc.

Do I need to buy the game again digitally?
If your disc qualifies and you claim its entitlement, you do not need to make a separate digital purchase to access that entitlement on Xbox under its applicable rules. If the disc is not eligible, or you want access without depending on continued possession of it, a direct digital purchase is a separate route. Xbox does not publish a stable complete list of eligible discs, so confirm your specific title through the current claim flow before deciding.

When to choose each route
- Use disc-to-digital if you already own a qualifying disc, have access to a disc-reading Xbox for the claim, and are willing to keep the disc.
- Buy digitally if you want an account-based license without the qualifying-disc condition, subject to Microsoft’s account and Home-console rules.
- Check title-specific benefits before expecting Play Anywhere or cloud access. Neither benefit applies universally; support depends on the individual game and service.
