If Sony denied your PS5 warranty claim, ask for the denial reason and the exact warranty term Sony is relying on in writing. Then compare that explanation with the warranty for the country where you bought the console, gather your dated records, and consider whether you also have a separate claim against the seller under local consumer law. A Sony warranty denial does not automatically decide whether another remedy is available.
1. Get Sony’s reason and the warranty clause in writing
Ask Sony to identify the specific reason for the denial, the warranty language it applied, and any inspection finding or photograph supporting its decision. Request a case or reference number and ask whether the decision can be reviewed. Sony’s published US and Canada warranty terms explain coverage and service conditions, but they do not promise a formal appeal process or a particular escalation ladder. Keep the request focused. For example: “Please provide the specific reason for denying my PS5 warranty claim, the warranty term you relied on, and any inspection finding or image supporting the decision. Please also let me know whether the case can be reviewed and provide its reference number.”
2. Build one organized evidence file
Save copies of the documents and correspondence before sending anything else. A dated record helps address whether the claim is within the applicable warranty period, what condition the console was in, and what Sony found during inspection.

- Photos or video showing the symptom and the console’s exterior condition, preferably with dates preserved.
- All Sony messages, inspection results, shipping labels, tracking records, and repair reports.
Sony’s US and Canada policy requires a valid dated bill of sale or retailer receipt to obtain warranty service. Requirements elsewhere should be checked in the terms for the relevant country. Sony’s US and Canada warranty terms
3. Check the warranty that actually applies
Do not assume a warranty term or exclusion applies worldwide. Check the terms for the country where the PS5 was purchased, the purchase date, whether you qualify as the covered purchaser, and the exact exclusion Sony cited. If you live in a different country from where you bought the console, check which terms and local rules apply to that situation.

United States and Canada
Sony’s published PS5 warranty for the United States and Canada covers the original purchaser for material defects in materials and workmanship for one year from the original purchase date. It lists exclusions that include specified misuse or accidental damage, alteration or removal of the serial number, certain damage connected to unauthorized service or opening, and some damage caused by unlicensed peripherals. Those terms are limited to the United States and Canada; they are not universal warranty language. Sony’s US and Canada warranty terms
European Economic Area
Sony’s EEA commercial guarantee is additional to statutory consumer rights. Its published guarantee provides a one-year manufacturer period in the listed territories, subject to its terms and proof-of-purchase requirements. A denial under that commercial guarantee does not, by itself, resolve a separate claim against the seller under consumer law. Sony’s EEA guarantee terms

Other countries
Use the country-specific Sony warranty and official consumer guidance for the place of purchase and your place of residence. US, Canadian, and EU terms should not be applied by analogy to another country.
4. Respond to the specific reason Sony gave
Address the disputed fact with relevant evidence rather than making a broad argument about the denial. Ask Sony to explain the basis for its finding if the evidence is not clear.

- Impact or liquid damage: Provide dated photos, a timeline, or an independent repair report that speaks to the condition or cause. Ask which inspection finding supports Sony’s conclusion.
- Purchase date or ownership: Send the invoice, dated receipt, or retailer order record and clarify who purchased the console.
- Unauthorized repair or modification: Ask what specific evidence Sony found and whether it believes that work caused the fault being claimed.
- Peripheral or usage issue: Identify the equipment and how it was used, then ask Sony to connect the cited exclusion to the damage at issue.
Do not assume that an exclusion is automatically invalid, or that every third-party repair voids every warranty. The applicable terms, facts, and local law matter.
5. Ask for a case review, then consider the seller route
Request a written review
Send one concise message with the denial, the term in dispute, your supporting records, and the outcome you are requesting. Ask for a supervisor or case review and a written final position. This is a reasonable request, not a guaranteed right to a particular escalation process or a promise that Sony will change its decision.

Contact the retailer where seller rights may apply
A manufacturer guarantee and a seller’s legal obligations are separate routes. In the EU, Sony’s guidance says consumers should report non-conforming goods to the seller; possible remedies include free repair or replacement, and in some cases a price reduction or reimbursement. European Commission guidance describes a two-year minimum legal guarantee in the EU, while noting national variation. This is not a universal two-year Sony manufacturer warranty. Check how the rules are implemented in the relevant country and whether they apply to your purchase. Sony’s EEA guarantee terms · European Commission: Guarantees and returns
When contacting the seller, include the purchase record, fault timeline, Sony’s denial, and the remedy you seek. The seller may be the relevant party for statutory rights even when Sony rejected its own manufacturer-warranty claim.

The next route depends on your country, purchase location, seller, and the reason for denial. Avoid relying on a general online deadline or complaint process unless it is confirmed for your jurisdiction.
- United States: The FTC directs consumers with questions about possible implied warranty coverage to their state consumer-protection office or a lawyer. FTC: Solving customer problems
- European Union: Check Your Europe and the relevant national consumer body for local implementation and the appropriate complaint route. European Commission: Guarantees and returns
- Elsewhere: Consult the official consumer-protection authority for the country involved and the applicable Sony warranty page.
The FTC’s July 2024 announcement quoted its Bureau of Consumer Protection director as saying that warning letters “put companies on notice that restricting consumers’ right to repair violates the law.” That announcement concerned warning letters and general legal concerns; it is not a ruling on an individual PS5 denial. Before opening the PS5 or sending it to a third-party repairer, check the exact denial basis, applicable warranty, and local law. Sony’s US and Canada terms exclude certain damage connected to unauthorized service or opening; that does not establish a blanket rule for every repair or jurisdiction. Sony also warns that service may change settings or cause data loss. Back up what you can and remove private materials before authorized service. Sony’s US and Canada warranty terms
