For most people in China, mobile is the easiest place to start if they already own a capable phone and the games they want are available for it. But market size is not a personal recommendation: choose by the games you want to play, the devices you already own, your preferred controls and screen, and whether the specific game and service are accessible in your region.
What the China market figures tell you—and what they don’t
China’s domestic game market recorded RMB 350.789 billion in actual sales revenue and 683 million users in 2025, according to the China Audio-Video and Digital Publishing Association (CADPA). The user figure is the association’s market-user count, not a count for any one platform. CADPA’s 2025 report summary
| Category, as reported | 2025 domestic revenue | Share or change |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile games | RMB 257.076 billion | 73.29% of revenue; up 7.92% year over year |
| Client games, primarily PC client games | RMB 78.16 billion | 22.28% of revenue; up 14.97% year over year |
| Console games | RMB 8.362 billion | Up 86.33% year over year |
| Web games | Not stated here as a revenue value | 1.23% of revenue |
The remaining share includes other categories; it should not be treated as console revenue. These categories also do not amount to a complete inventory of every way people play games on a PC.
The latest period in the cited figures is the first half of 2026: domestic gaming sales were RMB 188.45 billion, with 684 million users. Mobile revenue was RMB 135.21 billion and PC revenue RMB 45.29 billion; PC revenue was up 27.92% year over year, according to a Shanghai government report of official industry figures. Those six-month values should not be compared directly with the full-year 2025 totals. Shanghai government report on H1 2026 gaming figures

Choose by the games and setup you actually want
Mobile: the practical starting point if your phone is already enough
Mobile is a sensible first choice if you own a capable smartphone, want portable play, and prefer games designed around phone controls or shorter sessions. Its dominant share of domestic revenue confirms its market scale, but it does not mean every game or genre works well on a phone.

- Consider: whether touch controls and a smaller screen suit the games you care about.
- Check: the game’s official distribution route, your phone and operating-system compatibility, and the account region required.
- Budget for: optional in-game purchases, which can make spending less obvious than a single hardware purchase.
- If you want physical controls: verify controller compatibility with your exact phone and game. Backbone describes Backbone One as a phone controller that also supports streaming from PC or console; that is a product feature, not confirmation of local availability or universal compatibility. PC: the most flexible form factor, with costs and access to check
PC can mean a desktop, laptop, or handheld, with different trade-offs in performance, portability, battery life, and upkeep. It suits players who want keyboard-and-mouse or gamepad controls, a choice of play setups, or a computer that also serves non-gaming needs. The domestic client-game category was substantial in 2025 and PC revenue continued growing in the first half of 2026.
- Consider: the actual games you want, their hardware requirements, and whether you prefer a desk, laptop, or handheld setup.
- Check: official access to the relevant game and store or service, as well as warranty and support in your region.
- Budget for: the whole device cost, not just a headline price; PC hardware costs vary considerably.
- For handheld PC gaming: remember that a handheld is still a PC, not automatically a console-like experience in performance, compatibility, or battery life. Valve describes Steam Deck OLED as “Powerful, portable PC gaming, designed for comfort and a console-like user experience.” Its product page describes the device, but does not establish local availability or support for every buyer in China. Console: buy for a specific game or dedicated living-room setup
A console makes sense when the games you want are available on a particular model, you value a dedicated device or living-room play, and you accept that platform’s ecosystem and total cost. China’s reported console-game revenue grew rapidly in 2025, but from a much smaller base than mobile or PC client games. Revenue growth does not establish the breadth of available content, hardware value, or player satisfaction.

- Detachable Joy-Con controllers

- Check before buying: the exact console model, game edition, account and store region, online-service access, warranty, and local availability.
- Compare the actual setup: include any display or accessories you need, and consider whether you already own a device that plays the same games.
- Do not infer availability from market growth: the cited industry figures are not a device-by-device catalog of games or services.
A quick decision path
- Name the games first. Make a shortlist, then confirm each game’s official availability and supported devices for your region.
- Count devices you already own. If your phone or computer already runs the games you want, compare that route with the cost of buying a separate system.
- Choose how you want to play. Decide between touch, keyboard and mouse, gamepad, handheld play, or a dedicated living-room setup.
- Compare total cost and access. Include hardware, necessary accessories, account or online-service requirements, and regional warranty or support.
- Reconsider only if a key game or setup requires it. A larger market segment is not a reason by itself to buy a different device.
What the recent growth figures mean for buyers
CADPA’s 2025 figures put domestic console-game revenue at RMB 8.362 billion, up 86.33% year over year, while PC client-game revenue reached RMB 78.16 billion, up 14.97%. In H1 2026, the Shanghai government report recorded RMB 45.29 billion in PC revenue and year-over-year growth of 27.92%. These are reported industry revenue movements, not evidence that a specific device, store, or game has become available to every mainland China player.
For historical context, the National Press and Publication Administration’s H1 2024 figures reported mobile at 73.01% of domestic market revenue, client-PC revenue of RMB 33.763 billion, and console revenue of RMB 0.797 billion. These older figures are useful as a historical comparison, not as current buying guidance. NPPA H1 2024 report summary

Bottom line for your choice
Start with the games, then verify access and compatibility for your region. Choose mobile when your phone already fits your games and you value convenience; choose PC when flexibility and a broader range of setups matter; choose console when a specific supported game or dedicated living-room experience justifies the system. China’s market data helps describe scale, but it cannot make that personal decision for you.
