Stop sending money, contact the exchange or crypto ATM operator immediately, preserve your records, and report the scam. Ask the operator whether it can reverse the transaction, but do not assume a refund is possible. Crypto payments do not have the same legal protections as card payments, and anyone promising guaranteed recovery may be trying to scam you again.
What to do right now
- Stop all payments and follow-up instructions. Do not send more cryptocurrency for supposed taxes, account-unlocking charges, verification, or another investment deposit. Do not share seed phrases, passwords, or account credentials.
- Contact the exchange or ATM operator promptly. Explain that the transaction was fraudulent and ask whether it can be reversed or refunded. Use contact details you find independently on the operator’s official site, not a link or phone number provided by an unsolicited caller or message. A request is not a guarantee that funds can be recovered.
- Secure affected accounts. If you disclosed a password, identity information, or other credentials, contact the relevant exchange through its official channel and follow its account-security process. Be wary of urgent messages claiming your account is compromised and asking you to log in through a supplied link.
- Save the evidence before accounts or messages disappear. Keep transaction and account records, messages, emails, screenshots, website addresses, usernames, phone numbers, and notes on how the contact began. Record the date and time of each relevant event.
- Report the incident. In the United States, file a report with the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) and the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. You can also contact a local FBI field office. Outside the United States, use your local law-enforcement and consumer-fraud reporting channels.
Can you get the cryptocurrency back?
There is no reliable basis to promise that a completed crypto transfer can be recovered. The FTC says cryptocurrency payments do not have the same legal protections as credit- and debit-card payments and can be difficult to get back. Contacting the exchange or ATM operator quickly is still worthwhile: ask whether it can take action, but treat that as a request rather than an expected refund.

The FBI explains that exchanges may freeze accounts under their own internal processes or in response to legal process. A private recovery company cannot issue a seizure order. Reporting the transaction and giving investigators complete records can help them assess the case; it does not guarantee that funds will be returned.

How to recognize a recovery scam
After an initial loss, you may be approached by someone claiming to be a recovery firm, tracing expert, lawyer, government agent, or exchange representative. Treat unsolicited offers and promises of guaranteed recovery with particular caution. The FBI warns that fictitious law firms may demand upfront fees and seek personal or banking information. It says law enforcement does not charge victims to investigate crimes. The FTC likewise says legitimate government agencies and organizations do not require payment to help obtain a refund.

- Do not pay upfront fees or extra charges described as taxes, release costs, or account-unlocking fees.
- Do not provide a seed phrase, password, verification code, exchange credentials, or sensitive personal or banking details to an unknown contact.
- Do not trust a claim that a private company can seize cryptocurrency or guarantee a refund. The FBI states: “Private sector recovery companies cannot issue seizure orders to recover cryptocurrency.”
- Save the recovery offer and report it along with the original scam. The FTC’s guidance is direct: “Never pay upfront for a refund or help with a refund.”
What information to include in your report
Give agencies enough detail to identify the transactions and understand how the scam worked. If you do not have every item, submit what you do have.
- Token name, ticker, contract address if known, and the website or app where it was promoted.
- Transaction hash or ID; sending and receiving wallet addresses; cryptocurrency type and amount; date and time.
- Name of the exchange, broker, kiosk, or ATM used, along with receipts and relevant account or payment records.
- Scammer names or aliases, phone numbers, email addresses, social media handles, websites, messaging services, and how the first contact happened.
- Messages or screenshots showing promised returns, withdrawal problems, payment demands, or later recovery offers.
- Any money or information you sent to a purported recovery firm or lawyer after the original loss.
IC3 specifically asks for wallet addresses, amounts and asset types, dates and times, transaction hashes, and information about the contact method and platforms, domains, phone numbers, or identifiers involved. Keep your own copies of everything you submit.

What the reported numbers do—and do not—show
In its 2025 reporting, IC3 recorded 61,559 cryptocurrency-related complaints and $7.228 billion in reported losses. Compared with 2024, cryptocurrency-related complaints increased 48% and reported losses increased 25%. These are complaints received and losses reported to IC3, not a count of every victim and not a measure of an individual person’s chance of recovery. Separately, IC3 reported that victims further exploited by fictitious law firms lost over $9.9 million from February 2023 through February 2024.
